Linsley Gressitt BISHOP MUSEUM, HONOLULU This first installment treats the members of the subfamilies Prioninae, Disteniinae, Lepturinae and Cerambycinae from New Guinea, the Aru Islands, and the. Bismarck Archipelago. A few records of specimens from closely neighboring areas are included. In 1951 (Ent. Soc. Amer., Ann. 44: 1-30, 201-212) I treated some of the material in this group from the United States and Japanese wartime New Guinea collections and from the Sec- cond Archbold Expedition, plus a little other material. In the present revised treatment, material from many sources is included. The largest of these sources is the Bishop Mu­ seum, mainly the material resulting from the program "Zoogeography and evolution of Paci­ fic insects", commenced in 1955. The material from this source treated here was collected by me (1955, 1956, 1957, 1958), E. J. Ford, Jr. (1956), Wm. W. Brandt (1956-58), and E. L. Cassidy (1955-56). About 30 new species represented by unique specimens, and much material not yet mounted, including that taken by D. E. Hardy in 1957, must be treated later. The other sources of material, in approximate order of importance, are: the Third Archbold Expedition (Netherlands Indian-American Expedition), mainly collected by L. J. Toxopeus and J. Olthof; material in both the South Australian Museum, Adelaide, and the Australian Museum, Sydney, taken by C. T. McNamara, and additional material in the South Australian Museum, taken by Rev. L. Wagner, Miss Cheesman and others; the British Museum (Natural History) collections taken by Miss L. Evelyn Cheesman, F. H. Some genera recorded from Indonesia or Cape York, but not yet actually known from New Guinea, are included (asterisked) in the keys, and a few species from the Moluccas, Cape York Peninsula or the Solomon Islands are in­ cluded in the keys to species (also asterisked). Mrs. Dorothy Rainwater has prepared the drawings. 1959 Gressitt: Cerambycidae 61 LOCALITIES Since it is intended later to list entomological collecting localities from New Guinea, no space is given to this here. The localities of my 1955 trip have been identified in a published article (Gressitt, 1956, Entomological investigations in New Guinea mountains, Ha­ waiian Ent. Soc, Proc 16: 47-69, map, figs.), and those of my later trips, as well as those of Mr. Ford, Mr. Brandt and Dr. Hardy have been listed in mimeographed reports which are available. It should be pointed out that the term Papua has more than one meaning. In this pa­ per Papua denotes the geographical area comprising the Australian Territory of Papua, or southeastern New Guinea, including the islands off the eastern tip. However, the adjec­ tive Papuan here denotes the Papuan Zoogeographical Subregion, which includes the Mo­ luccas, New Guinea, Bismarck Archipelago, Aru Islands, and the Solomons Islands. It will be noted that the titles of some of the keys include the term Papuan, instead of New Gui­ nea. In such cases Papuan is in the zoogeographic sense. Under the heading "DISTRIBUTION" under each species the area including the type locality is listed first, set off by a semicolon. (See also footnote on first page of article.) ZOOGEOGRAPHY This study in general confirms my view that New Guinea is part of the Oriental Re­ gion as faf as insects are concerned (see my article in Syst. Zool. 5: 11-32, 47, 1956, and Tenth Int. Congr. Ent., Proc 1: 767-773, 1958), although not so distinctly for the subfami­ lies treated here as in the case of the Hispinae as recently reported by me (Nova Guinea, n. s. 8: 205-324, 1957). However, the subfamily Lamiinae indicates for New Guinea a closer relationship with the Oriental Region than do the Prioninae and the Cerambycinae. The subfamily Cerambycinae, particularly, shows more relationship with the Australian fauna than do many other groups of insects in New Guinea. This appears to be in part related to the fact that the subfamily Cerambycinae is dominant in Australia. The Australian fauna is the only major one in which the subfamily Cerambycinae exceeds the sub­ family Lamiinae in representation. In most regions, the subfamily Lamiinae includes from two to five times as many species as does the subfamily Cerambycinae. This is also true in New Guinea, and this fact represents further evidence that New Guinea is Oriental, en- tomologically. It is estimated in the collections at hand, totalling about 1,000 species of longicorns from New Guinea, the Lamiinae number four to five times as many species as the subfamilies treated here combined, and thus proportionately are more than twice as well represented in New Guinea as in Australia. Also, the subfamilies Disteniinae and Leptu- rinae are absent from Australia, though present in New Guinea. The species treated here belong to 76 genera. Twenty-three genera are Australian, 33 are Oriental and 20 are precinctive (endemic) or limited to New Guinea plus parts of eastern Indonesia, the Philippines, the Solomons, Micropolynesia or the Malagasy Subre­ gion. All of these latter genera are of Oriental relationship. There are 53 species belonging to the 23 Australian genera. Thus less than one-third of the genera, and less than one- third of the species, are of apparent Australian derivation. Furthermore, some of the genera which are considered Australian may actually prove to be centered in, or to have evolv­ ed in, the Papuan Subregion. 62 Pacific Insects Vol. 1, no. 1 Of the 203 species from New Guinea, the Bismarck Archipelago and the Aru Islands treated in this work, 138 are precinctive to New Guinea (including Waigeu, Biak, Japen and the islands just east of Papua). Of these, four are known only from Waigiou, two are limited to Japen, four to islands just east of Papua, and none are limited to Biak.

Of the associated entomofauna phytophagous beetles (Coleoptera) of various taxonomic groups adapted their life history to this ancient host tree. This occurred either already before the late Gondwanian interruption of the previously joint Araucaria distribution or only later in the already geographically separated populations. A bibliographic survey of the eastern and western coleopterans recorded on Araucaria trees resulted in well over 200 species belonging to 17 families. These studies include records of beetles living on 12 of the 19 extant Araucaria species. Their occurrence and adaptations to the host trees are discussed under aspects of evolution and co- speciation. (Contribution from the Australian Museum, Sydney.) (Plate xv. and text-figure.) Shortly after the publication of my revision of the Australian species of the genus Syllitus (Rec. Aus. Mus., xx., 2, 27 August, 1937, pp. 108-116, pis. xviii-xix) , I received a small collection of insects belonging to this genus from Mr. A. R. Brimblecombe, Assistant Research Officer, Department of Agriculture and Stock, Brisbane, Queensland, with the request that I should identify them. On examination I found that the collection was of exceptional interest, since the majority of the species included were ap- parently new to science. Mr. Brimblecombe very kindly agreed to my suggestion that I should be permitted to describe any new species, and their descriptions together with those of several additional species from the Australian Museum Collection, and two new species of the allied genus Aphiorhynchus^ comprise the pre- sent paper. In all ten new species are described, and one new genus de- fined, forming a very interesting addition to the Cerambycid fauna of Aus- tralia, and particularly in these hitherto but little collected genera, in which, no doubt, many undescribed forms still await discovery. For much of this time it was the world’s largest trading company, owning, at the height of its wealth and power, more than half the world’s sea-going shipping – with its characteristic ship, the ‘fluyt’, also being produced for the merchant marines of other countries, including England. It was known internationally by its distinctive VOC monogram, the initials standing for ‘Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie’ – or simply the United East India Company. Those who organized it did not find it necessary to add that it was ‘Dutch’ – in the commercial world of its time no-one needed to be told that, and indeed, at the beginning of the seventeenth century ‘Dutch’ was only beginning to be identified with an independent state. The VOC played not only a key role in the history of the Netherlands, but also in that of the other states in which it was involved, from England, France, Spain and Portugal in Europe, to any number of principalities, sultanates and empires along the coasts of Asia, going as far as Japan and China, and including most of the coasts of India, Ceylon, Malaya and what is now Indonesia, to say nothing of the odd port of call in Africa.

    rik Van WELie Slave Trading and Slavery in the Dutch Colonial Empire: A Global Comparison INTRODUCTION From the early seventeenth to the mid-nineteenth century, slavery played a fundamental role in the Dutch colonial empire.1 All overseas possessions of the Dutch depended in varying degrees on the labor of slaves who were imported from diverse and often remote areas. Over the past decades numer- ous academic publications have shed light on the history of the Dutch Atlantic slave trade and of slavery in the Dutch Americas.2 These scholarly contribu- tions, in combination with the social and political activism of the descen- dants of Caribbean slaves, have helped to bring the subject of slavery into the national public debate. The ongoing discussions about an official apology for the Dutch role in slavery, the erection of monuments to commemorate that history, and the inclusion of some of these topics in the first national history canon are all testimony to this increased attention for a troubled past.3 To some this recent focus on the negative aspects of Dutch colonial history has already gone too far, as they summon the country’s glorious past to instill a 1. The genus Syllitus forms a small but extremely interesting group of the Cerambycidae, which on account of the small size and dull coloration of its members appears to be generally overlooked and neglected by collectors, and there is little doubt that systematic collecting would add considerably to the number of known species. Although the insects are mostly of small size and sombre coloration when viewed with the naked eye, a microscopic examination reveals them to be of considerable beauty, diverse in the arrangement of the raised costae and the sculpture of the elytra. The genus Syllitus was founded by Pascoe in 1858 (Trans. Ent. Soc. Lond. (N.S.), v, p. 24) for the reception of Stenoderus grammicus, S. deustus, and S. rectus, all of which had been described by Newman. Pascoe considered that these species were "so different, yet so closely allied to each other, that their separation as a distinct group is advisable.
