This collection of engr. plates provides a visual history of some of the key events of the recently concluded American Revolution. They were engraved by Nicolas Ponce and François Godefroy, after designs by Fauvel, Marillier, Le Paon and other notable French artists of the period. The views include several small vignettes on 1st and final plates (military and naval engagements); the capture of a tax-collector; the Battle of Lexington; Burgoyne’s surrender at Saratoga; the taking of Senegal, Grenada, Tobago and Dominica; the capture of Pensacola by Galvez; Cornwallis’ surrender; the skirmish at St- Eustache; the siege of Fort St-Philippe in Minorca; the attack on St. Christopher; a map of the various European settlements in what became the United States, with some population statistics; 4 sm. maps of the English concessions to France and Spain by the Treaty of 1783 (a composite map of the Gulf of Mexico, Florida, Barbary, Minorca, and Tobago); the final leaf consists of a review of the Treaty of Versailles, with a list of the principal officers killed or wounded in the war, several sm. vignettes and a listing of all the plates. It was issued to commemorate the role of the French military in the events described.     LA PARATOPIE AU CENTRE : LE NON-LIEU COMME RAISON D’ÊTRE DE SUSANA SOCA Valentina LITVAN Université Paris 8, LI.RI.CO (EA 3055) « L’écrivain n’a pas lieu d’être […] et doit construire le territoire de son œuvre à travers cette faille même » (MAINGUENEAU, 2004 : 85). Cette définition de Dominique Maingueneau contient le paradoxe selon lequel l’identité de l’écrivain émerge de son non-lieu. Un non-lieu qui n’est pas textuel (la mort de l’auteur proclamée par Barthes), ni contextuel (dans une allusion purement sociologique à la condition marginale de l’écrivain). Car Maingueneau propose la notion de paratopie pour dépasser précisément le dualisme entre texte et contexte, œuvre et écrivain : « […] faire œuvre, c’est produire une œuvre et construire par là même les conditions qui permettent de la produire » (MAINGUENEAU, 2004 : 86). L’écrivain se construit en construisant son œuvre, dans laquelle, paradoxalement, il disparaît. L’auteur se construit ainsi par son œuvre, à partir du non-lieu. À partir de cette problématique du non-lieu comme trait fondamental de la paratopie, nous allons exposer le cas particulier de Susana Soca. Figure méconnue de la littérature uruguayenne, son existence dans le champ littéraire semble se légitimer précisément par un non- lieu constant et ce, à différents niveaux de la production littéraire. Nous présenterons d’abord l’auteur, pour décrire ensuite quatre traits paratopiques qui la/le définissent et, finalement, essayer de démontrer que la paratopie, caractérisée par l’instabilité et le non-lieu, confère une place centrale à cette figure dans la tradition littéraire dont elle fait partie.

    Francisco Matto b. 1911, Montevideo, Uruguay - d. 1995, Montevideo, Uruguay Francisco Matto, c. 1944 1911 Francisco Alberto Matto Vilaró was born in Montevideo on October 18th. His father Francisco Alejo Matto Vilaró, was musically inclined and his mother María Eulalia Vilaró wrote poetry. His brother Jorge, died at age 8 and his younger sister Graciela, died in 1945. The Matto Family, 1918 The Matto family on the side of river Santa Lucia, c. 1924 1922 Matto wrote his first poems and took painting lessons with the Uruguayan painter Carlos Rúfalo. He was privately tutored at home. 1926 Father died. 1932 Traveled to Tierra del Fuego in Southern Argentina and Chile where he purchased the first pieces of what would become an important collection of Pre-Colombian Amerindian art. Boat which Matto travelled to Southern Argentina, 1932 Francisco Matto and travel companions on board, Hortensia Vilaró and Mrs. Herman, 1932 1935 Composed and painted surrealist poems and murals on the walls of his studio. Through his friend the French-Uruguayan poet Jules Supervielle, and Susana Soca, met Henri Michaux who spent the year 1936 in Uruguay. 1938 Painted large-size irregularly shaped wood panels such as “Woman and Rooster.” 1939 Met Torres-García and began to attend his lectures. 1940 Submitted two paintings: Portrait of J.M.V. and War to the I Municipal Salon. In the IV National Salon, he exhibited: Woman in a Striped Dress and A Corner in the Park. 1941 Exhibited Cain and Abel at the II Municipal Salon and The Red Chair at the V National Salon.
