Happy New Year!

Commodore – Doug Schwarz

What a wonderful time we all had at the Change of Watch meeting. I would like to thank Jim and Gloria Fitzpatrick and the planning committee for doing such a marvelous job, the room looked delightful and the decorations were lovely. The food was delicious and I would like to thank Rudy Heessels for cooking the flavorful ham. I would also like to make a big Shout-out to everyone who worked in the kitchen and helped prepare the food. This event was a success and it reinforces our philosophy of promoting fellowship within our club.

The Sequim Bay Yacht Club began 42 years ago with the goal to promote and encourage safe boating, the science and practice of seamanship and navigation, fellowship and camaraderie among the members, as well as to provide leadership in club sailing, cruising and rowing programs. If you love the water and enjoy socializing we have the club for you. As of December 1st, SBYC has a total of 131 members. Membership is comprised of approximately 30% Social, 10% Power boaters, 40% Sailors and 20% Rowers (with 28 club members qualified to row). It is difficult to categorize members who are both power or sailboat owners and who participate as master rowers or enjoy kayaking on the side. What a great active club we have!

In addition one of the most important functions of the SBYC is philanthropy. Last year our club raised over $30,977 for Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County through our Reach and Row for Hospice activities (a record for our Club)! In particular, one couple, Gunvor and Bob McClinton have raised $108,797 for VHOCC since September 2002. WOW!!! Our club has also been very generous in helping the community during the holidays with donations of toys, food and monetary gifts. Congratulations to all.

The 2019 events calendar is nearly complete and includes many activities - everything from monthly lunches with friends, listening to interesting speakers and programs during our monthly meetings and participating in club co-sponsored cruises. We also have hands - on classes to learn sailing and/or rowing technique so you can sail our club’s Flying Scot or enjoy our rowing sculls. Members participate in sailboat racing in both small boats and larger ones and in race committee activities during club sponsored regattas.

Opportunities exist to interface with the public during our open house events to create more interest in boating and SBYC. We have opportunities to work with and get to know and enjoy the company of others who share a love of being on the water while helping the community. That’s the social aspect that our club provides.

It takes volunteers to coordinate the activities we all enjoy…the Sequim Bay Yacht Club can use any ideas, time, energy or enthusiasm you can offer. Consider emailing your ideas to your commodore, and they will be considered by the board. Let’s utilize our wonderful clubroom more and have a great 2019.

Our 2019 SBYC Sunshine Committee Chairperson is Susan Sorensen. Her duties are to respond to club members who are sick or grieving. Club members are encouraged to contact Susan 360.681.0977) about members who need a bit of sunshine. She will send cards and/or flowers to members on behalf of the Club and will report news of Sunshine actions for the month to the Scuttlebutt Editor for publication when appropriate and to the membership at General Meetings.

The club would like to thank Glenda Mitchell for being the Sunshine Chairperson for the last two years. GREAT JOB GLENDA!

Vice Commodore – Jerry Fine

Happy New Year to all and I trust the Christmas Holiday was everything you had hoped for! It's a great time of year for seeing old friends and reaching out to people you don't see on a regular basis.

As we get into the New Year, I hope we can all plan on attending as many SBYC functions as possible. Better yet, let's sign up to help out with a couple of them throughout the year. There are Happy Hour Host needed every month, it's not that hard and a heck of a lot of fun to do. Then there is Sip Sup, very rewarding to be involved in, as they are spectacular each and every time. Step up and be the "lead person" or get on board to help out with one of these wonderful functions. Myself, I can't wait for Men's Treat and I am all signed up with Chris to help again this year. It was a real hoot last year and I do look forward to doing it again soon! Please help out where you can and have some extra fun in the process.

I have met some new people at holiday parties this past few weeks and they are boaters, they will be coming to our Happy Hour events and two couples sound like they would be willing to join SBYC!! WOW, that is something we need for sure, new members. I will strive to get new members throughout the year and hope each and every one of you will do the same. We have a great club with a lot to offer, let's reach out to people and get the word out about SBYC.

As Vice Commodore, I am looking forward to a fun filled year ahead with all the activities inside our clubroom and on the water. There will be lots of races to enjoy, mini cruses to participate in and getting out on our beautiful bay. Let's work hard to have a great boating year filled with lots of wonderful adventures. I am so ready to have some good times with all the members of SBYC.

Happy New Year Jerry Fine Vice Commodore

Rear Commodore – Andrea Williams

Can you boast of having hiked or biked the entire Olympic Discovery Trail? Maybe half? How about a couple of miles (like me). We will start 2019 with a great speaker, Jeff Bohman, for our first general meeting, held on the third Wednesday, January 16, at 7:30 p.m. Jeff is the president of the Peninsula Trails Coalition (PTC).

Jeff Bohman grew up in the Chicago area, got his BS in Environmental Biology from the University of Colorado, and had a diverse career of positions in natural resources management and water resources planning and management. It included 11 years working as a national park ranger in Denali National Park, Alaska, 10 years working on the Olympic Peninsula with the US Forest Service, Lower Elwha S’Klallam Tribe, and Clallam County in watershed planning and management, and several other positions in Alaska and on the Peninsula. Before retiring early in 2014, Jeff spent his final 9 work years working for Olympic National Park on a wide variety of projects within the overall Elwha River Ecosystem and Fisheries Restoration project of dam removal and habitat restoration throughout the lower Elwha River watershed.

Jeff arrived on the Olympic Peninsula in 1989, and began his involvement on the Peninsula Trails Coalition board in 1991. He’s now in his second tenure as PTC board president, resuming in 2013. He and his wife, Barb Maynes, have two adult daughters, and he and Barb are happily exploring the opportunity and variety that dual retirement now offers.

The Peninsula Trails Coalition coordinates with and supports the 14 federal, state, county, city and tribal jurisdictions who are the public owners responsible for segments of the trail.

PTC’s Mission is to promote construction, maintenance, and use of the Olympic Discovery Trail as a nationally significant, non-motorized, multi-use trail across the North Olympic Peninsula.

PTC’s Vision is to create and sustain the Olympic Discovery Trail as a world-class, multi-use, non-motorized trail system connecting communities across the North Olympic Peninsula, while serving as a catalyst for recreation, community health, transportation, and economic development.

A NEW YEAR’S CHALLENGE

I have found that when I set a goal, I am more likely to be happy with the results that I achieve rather than leaving something I’d like to accomplish to chance. For that reason, I am proposing a club goal of 19 memberships in 2019. If we grow by more than 19 memberships, so much the better. To that end, I request that when you learn who the speaker will be at our monthly meeting, that you consider who among your friends and acquaintances might enjoy the presentation and invite them to join you for the meeting. Take the time to show them around the club and share with them what we do and invite them to join SBYC. We have three Sip Sups during the year which is another stellar time to show off the club at one of our fun functions. As always, there are blank membership forms on the left side of the bar.

A part of enticing new folks to join us is to extend a hand of welcome to someone who appears at the club whom you haven’t met before. Perhaps it will be one of our newer members you haven’t had the pleasure of meeting, or it could be a prospective member. Our success as a club depends on each of us.

At the Change of Watch dinner, someone spoke to me about getting another name tag. After the event, who it was. Please let me know so I can assist you in this.

One of our members returned his name tag to Peninsula Awards located at 422 E. Washington in Sequim to have the pin on the back of his name tag changed to a magnetic back for a fee of $2. This option is available to anyone who is interested. Kathy is happy to do this for you while you wait. The Peninsula Awards is open Monday through Friday 8:30-5 p.m.

Commodore Schwarz has provided us with a list of classes offered by North Olympic Sail and Power Squadron for the same class fee that Power Squadron members pay. I highly encourage anyone who is remotely interested in weather to consider the weather class beginning in January. Gary Yaruss is a fantastic teacher and is stating definitively that this is the last time he is teaching the class. The class will be offered by a different teacher in the future, but this man is a great teacher with a wealth of experience.

In the month of January, Margaret Schwarz and I along with a couple of other members will be meeting to discuss some new ideas about how to build the membership. If you have some ideas you would like to share, please contact me at [email protected]. We’ll welcome all suggestions.

I am looking forward to the New Year and growing our great club. Please join me in this endeavor to make it a great year!

Ann Elliot, Membership Co-Chair with Margaret Schwarz

Happy Hour News – Joel Cziok

Season’s Greetings to all from somewhere in New Mexico!

The November Happy Hour, hosted by the Fine's was incredible! The generosity of the Fine's fabulous eats and multiples of baskets that were made up of wonderful jars of tasty fruits, chutney, jams, and breads that were randomly drawn from raffle tickets.

The attendance in November nearly pushed some of us to the hallway. With a maximum of 49 allowed at a time in the SBYC Clubroom, we had 42 members and guests. (Perhaps we need more space at the JWM)

A small note on the winners in the random drawings. Margaret Schwarz. This lucky lady had the magic working, as the tickets she held were winners over, and over again! It was truly incredible to watch, as she shyly and blushingly laughed as she won.

Our SBYC members opened their wallets and hearts to benefit Hospice thanks to the vision that Jerry and Marian share to the tune of $310.00. Sue Sorenson reported that this Happy Hour Benefit pushed the total amount for 2018 to Hospice to over $30,000.00. Can you believe it? Our SBYC membership is nothing short of amazing! Thank you!

Our upcoming Happy Hours are:

January 25 - Hosted by Ray and Glenda Mitchell.

February 22 - Hosted by Kathryn and Wes Haskell

Have you enjoyed our Happy Hours? We all hope so, and I encourage you to help by hosting a Happy Hour in 2019. Available months are April, May, June, July, August, September, October, and November. Just email me at [email protected], and I can help make it a great experience!

Please remember to invite guests to our Happy Hours!

Cruising – Ted Shanks SBYC 2019 CRUISING

You have your boat, you may have taken Power Squadron classes and clinics and before you know it the cold winter months will be gone. Soon it will be time to throw off the dock lines and cruise the beautiful waters of the Pacific Northwest. Whether this is your first time taking your boat beyond the bay or you are an Old Salt, the SBYC 2019 Cruising Schedule will have something for all. We will join our friends in the Power Squadron and Port Angeles Yacht Club for our cruises. This Cruising Schedule will take us to familiar places and hopefully, new places. There will be plenty of opportunities for visiting marinas, state and provincial parks, tying up to docks, mooring balls and anchoring. (If you have not tied up to a mooring ball or attempted to anchor before, that can be a little intimidating. That’s where being a member of the cruising group comes in. There will be knowledgeable and willing members to help you.) SBYC cruising is a team effort that begins long before we throw off our lines. Each cruise will have a cruise team with a cruise captain to pull each cruise together. We shall explore new islands and adventures and will visit exotic cities and ports. These cruise schedules will often coincide with local events, like taking a van to East Sound town and up to Constitution Mountain on Orcas Island or attending the famous Organ Recital in Rosario and wandering the farmers markets at Ganges and Sidney. We may have the opportunity to visit the famous Buchart Gardens on Vancouver Island. You can choose to go on an entire cruise or just part of a cruise, it’s up to you. Rest assured 2019 will be a great year for fun with boating friends. Some cruises will be short, others longer. Some will be focused in the south Sound and many going north up the U.S. San Juan Islands and many of the Canadian Gulf Islands, Vancouver Island and further north to Desolation Sound. By request, this year there is proposed a ‘DUDES’ cruise. A cruise for the guys See the rough draft below of times and places that will give us a starting point. One of the reasons for this early planning is that for some of us, it is never too early to get ready. Pick the cruise(s) you would like to join and let me know. Whatever you do, we promise you, cruising with SBYC will be fun with your friends, new and old.

Our local North Olympic Sail and Power Squadron provides classes, clinics and On-the-Water Training. These are provided at the cut-rate cost of up to half price because of our working relationship with the NOSPS. When our 2019 boating season begins, NOSPS will have provided the beginners American Boating Course (ABC), and advanced courses in Seamanship, Piloting, Advanced Piloting, Junior and Senior Navigation. There are also elective courses like Marine Engine Maintenance, Cruise Planning, Marine Electrical Systems and Weather. NOSPS has provided members and non-members several valuable Clinics including AIS, navigating in the Fog, Anchoring and Crossing the (Canadian) Border. Some are monthly clinics taught every month through April. Some On-the-Water training will be repeated prior to and during the cruising season so stay tuned

Rowing – Don Berger, Frank DeSalvo

Sequim Bay rowers have continued to row through the fall and intend to row throughout the winter as weather permits. Rowers have enjoyed the presence of Ivana Bacalovic as a rowing instructor thanks to our connection with Sean Halberg. Ivana has conducted several coached rows this fall and will continue to work with interested parties throughout her stay in the US, before returning to her home in Vienna Austria. Her father was a National coach for Austria’s men’s and women’s lightweight rowers on their national team. Ivana is an accomplished rower in her own right. She has won national championships several years in a row in multiple categories. Most importantly, for our purposes, she is an excellent instructor. We are very fortunate to be exposed to such technically excellent instruction by someone with and engaging and warm personality.

As you may have observed, the launch has been out of the water for the last 2 weeks for upgrades to the electrical system. One of our rowers, Coleen Lyons’ husband, a marine electrician, has generously volunteered his time to install an updated electrical system that should serve us well into the future.

Trish Berry, a Port Townsend rower, has decided to take one of two Pocock wherries that we got for free. She will take it off our hands for the same price we paid. This will help free-up some much need space in our boat yard.

Commodores Note.

2019 Community Partner Program has awarded SBYC $1,670

The Port of Port Angeles Commissioners’ recently approved a SBYC proposal to build a new floating dock for storing rowing shells, equipment and small sailboats. This proposed project is at the preliminary planning stage and has not been presented to our SBYC board as yet. But the POPA 2019Community Partner Program has awarded SBYC $1,670 which can be used to buy construction materials when & if this project begins.
