I don't know much about what she was like when she was my age. Don't know much about the things she liked or didn't like. The few times she mentioned her own parents, who I've never met, it was mostly about how she wanted to get as far away from them as she could once she'd grown up. She never told me why. I asked a few times, but she would pretend she hadn't heard me. I didn't want to go to camp that summer. I had wanted to stay with her, to help her through the divorce. But she insisted I go away. I figured she wanted the alone time, so I gave it to her. Camp was awful. I hated it.

How can we get off the soapbox and work together to bring a new constructive age into fruition?” There is so much wrong with this panel description that I don’t even know where to begin. The idea that games as a medium are exempt from criticism because they’re “supposed to be fun” is ridiculous and immature.

She would be angry one minute and the next minute she was okay. I grew up thinking it was my job to keep her happy. I ended up moving out when I was 15 and I got in with the kids who were smoking weed and up to no good. That lasted throughout my teen years and then after a struggle with anorexia, I was introduced to meth. This is when things got real bad for me because the eating disorder and my addiction fed each other in this violent cycle.

Martha has devoted her professional life to being not only an outstanding legal interpreter and translator but also to implementing systemic changes, including encouraging defender offices to learn to build bridges with clients through language. When several legal assistants began taking Spanish lessons, we decided to provide support with Palabras Del Día – Words of the Day – to focus on vocabulary specific to public defense. In doing so, we realized that even fluent Spanish-speakers could benefit from discussion of specialized legal vocabulary, cultural connections, and ethical norms. So here are 57 charlas – chats – that cover a range of common issues that public defenders confront in our daily work. We hope that other offices find them useful either as a reference or as periodic messages to office-mates who are interested in Español. We rounded out our project with ten ideas at the end for building and maintaining fluency in Spanish that we have found fun and effective.
