I am partictularily interested in that history which has left tangible evidence in the form of many castles dotting the Vosges foothills and the Ma Serie Histoire de l’Alsace fortified towns which often opposed them on the fertile plains below. Not only the towns and castles themselves but the ghosts of those who lived Tome I: Haut-Rhin there, their concerns, motavations, and the broader European social currents Tome II: Bas-Rhin that influenced and often inundated them. Tome III: Histoire Naturelle I have started with a backbone of articles describing the many castles which remain ever present. These are the transition civilation existing between an early Celtic and Roman world swamped by the growth of Frankish power, and by a later Europe shaped by new cities and ideas yet retaining the legacy of feudal/aristocratic ambitions and foibles. The ruins of ideas are often as present as the castles themselves. Alsace is one of those border states (as it were) always part of larger neighboring regions without necessarily a unique history of its own. What happened in Alsace happened in Europe and what happened in Europe happened in Alsace. As such, a look into this region's history provides larger insights and understanding. These two volumes are certainly my version of an argument from the specific to the general. For each volume I include at the end a more extensive summary of Alsace history, a slightly larger perspective. As each of the two volumes are intended to work stand-alone if desired, the Alsace History is repeated in both volumes. The geology of Alsace determines where the hills stop and lowlands start, the cource of the Rhine, the whole flavor of the province. Geology is important for human history in many ways, in the silver loads at St Marie, the Pechelbronn oil sands, the bassin potassique, the red sandstone from which so many of the castles and building are built.     STADTKANZLEI Schutzkonzept – Sitzung des Stadtrates von Nidau vom 17. Juni 2021 Die Sitzung des Nidauer Stadtrats vom 17. Juni 2021 wird unter Einhaltung der folgenden Schutzmassnahmen durchgeführt. Nach Art. 4 der Verordnung über Massnahmen in der besonderen Lage zur Bekämpfung der Covid-19-Epidemie ist für Veranstaltungen ein Schutzkonzept zu erstellen. Bei der Wahl der Schutzmassnahmen ist darauf zu achten, für alle Teilnehmenden einen wirkungsvollen Schutz vor einer Ansteckung mit Covid-19 zu erreichen. Ausschluss von Personen, die krank sind oder sich krank fühlen Die Teilnahme an der Sitzung ist nur Personen ohne jegliche Covid-19-Symp- tome gestattet. Schutz von besonders gefährdeten Personen Besonders gefährdeten Personen wird empfohlen, in Eigenverantwortung zuhause zu bleiben. Maskenpflicht Am Eingang werden für sämtliche Personen Schutzmasken verteilt, damit während der gesamten Sitzung eine Maske getragen werden kann. Diese darf ausschliesslich für Voten am Rednerpult abgelegt werden. Bei Sitzungsende muss die Maske bis zum Ausgang und auch im Aussenraum, insbe- sondere wenn der Abstand von 1.5 Metern nicht eingehalten werden kann, getragen werden. Allgemeine Schutzmassnahmen Am Sitzungsort wird mit dem Plakat des Bundesamts für Gesundheit auf die emp- fohlenen Schutzmassnahmen aufmerksam gemacht. Am Eingang, im Sitzungslokal und bei den Toiletten wird Desinfektionsmittel zur Verfügung gestellt. Les Vosges du Nord : une terre propice aux verriers Nous sommes ici dans le massif gréseux des Vosges du Nord, qui se prolonge en Allemagne par la forêt du Palatinat (Pfälzerwald), avec leurs forêts immenses. Le point culminant, le Grand Winterberg (Bas- Rhin) n’est qu’à 581 mètres. Mais l’érosion a fortement entaillé ce massif et formé des vallées encaissées. On y trouve du sable, de l’argile pour faire des pots, du bois à foison pour y faire fondre le sable, et des grandes fougères pour en extraire la potasse qui permet de faire baisser la température de fusion : tout est réuni pour faire des Vosges du Nord un pays du verre. My wife grew up in the shadow of the Trois Châteaux de Haut-Eguisheim and we have visited this site often. It was only later that Ma Serie Histoire de l’Alsace I became aware of just how important the Eguisheim Dynasty was to the history of Alsace. Tome I: Haut-Rhin Tome II: Bas-Rhin This volume contains readings (repetitive I am sure) of the history of the Tome III: Histoire Naturelle family and their residence. I focus at some length with readings concerning Tome IV: Maison Eguisheim the Investiture Controversy between the Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV Tome V: Les origines du monachisme en Alsace and Pope Gregory VII. This controversy played out, in part, in Alsace with the conflict between the Eguisheim and Hohenstaufen families. Finally. I include scholarly references with discussion/analysis based on the original texts from which most of the history of the Eguisheim is based.

Revised version of the paper delivered on 10 October 2015, Northumbria University, (Newcastle), to be published in : Early Modern Universities : Networks of Higher Learning, Anja-Silvia Goeing, Mordechai Feingold and Glyn Parry (eds), 2020/2021 Swiss educational structures experienced major transformations during the sixteenth century, transformations which were driven by the cultural movement of humanism and by the Protestant and Catholic Reformations.1 At the beginning of the sixteenth century, the Swiss Confederacy counted only one institution of higher learning: the University of Basel. In 1560, if we take into account the allied territory of Geneva, Switzerland benefited also from four newly created Protestant academies in Zurich, Bern, Lausanne and Geneva. 2 These academies offered instruction in arts and theology, comparable in level and nature to that in the universities of their time. However, the academies did not have the right to grant academic titles. At that time, this ability was restricted to institutions that had received a privilege from the pope or the emperor, and these Catholic authorities would not give it to institutions in Reformed (Calvinist or Zwinglian) territories. In this chapter, we are going to look at how students were helped financially by the Swiss political and religious authorities in order to travel and study abroad. We will see that the policy regarding student scholarships varied considerably among the different Swiss Protestant cities.

I have edited all the Creed-forms set for that examination, with the exception of three lengthy formularies, which belong rather to a history of doctrine than to my present subject. These are-the letter of Cyril to N estorius, the letter of Leo to Flavian, and the Definition of the Council of Chalcedon. Ensuite le col de Wettstein est atteint après une descente de 2 kilomètres, eh oui, celle-ci continuant pour rejoindre en contrebas la route qui conduit au col de la Schlucht (1 139 mètres). La montée de 12 kilomètres est simple et agréable. Le col atteint, la route des crêtes conduit au pied du Hohneck et là, des pentes plus sérieuses de l'ordre de 8% et 9% avec une fin à 12% permettent d'atteindre le sommet (1 362 mètres) pour une vue imprenable sur les Vosges. La descente va bon train et la route des crêtes, après avoir rejoint le col de la 2 Schlucht, est une succession de toboggans. Ensuite une grande descente (celle du col du Calvaire) jusqu'à Orbey, et une dernière montée de 7 kilomètres ramène à Labaroche.
