FLAMES LAST GAME HIGHLIGHTS OCTOBER 20, 2019 – CALGARY FLAMES [2] vs. [1] The Flames entered Anaheim on the second game of a back-to-back for the team. Neither team was able to get one to go in the first period but both would get on the board in the second with the Flames goal coming from Michael Stone, his first of the season. This one would still be tied mid-way through the third when Matthew Tkachuk would feed Mikael Backlund for a one-timer and he would make no mistake giving the Flames the lead. The Flames would hang on thanks to a terrific effort from Cam Talbot in the third period, he picks up his first win as a Flame as they take this one 2-1.

TONIGHT'S GAME The Capitals square off against the Calgary Flames at Scotiabank Saddledome on Tuesday in the first of two meetings between the teams this season. The Capitals are 35-27-9-2 all-time against the Flames.

NOTE OF THE NIGHT Second Star - John Carlson has been named the NHL’s Second Star of the Week for the week ending Oct. 20. Carlson recorded an assist in the Capitals’ 5-3 win over the Chicago Blackhawks last night, extending his point total to 18 (3g, 15a) through 10 games. Carlson, who is expected to play four more games before November, is two points shy of becoming the fourth different defenseman in NHL history to register 20 or more in a single month of October. He would join (1981: 7g, 13a, 20 points in 13 games; 1988: 3g, 18a, 21 points in 11 games), Al MacInnis (1988: 8g, 17a, 25 points in 13 games) and (1990: 5g, 16a, 21 points in 14 games). Carlson has collected at least one assist in each game of his seven-game point streak (3g, 12a, 15 points). Only two defensemen in franchise history have recorded a longer assist streak: from Feb. 19 – March 6, 1988 (2g, 10a in eight games) and Mike Green from Oct. 15 – Nov. 1, 2009 (1g, 9a in eight games).

TOP FIVE CAPS FACTS Gr8 - Alex Ovechkin recorded his team-leading sixth goal of the season on Sunday against the Chicago Blackhawks. With that tally, Ovechkin scored his 729th career NHL goal (regular season and combined) to pass Teemu Selanne (728) for sole possession of the 11th-highest such total in NHL history. With 664 career regular season goals, Alex Ovechkin is now five goals shy of passing Luc Robitaille (668) for the seventh-most goals in NHL history. His 664 goals, all with the Capitals, are the fourth-most in NHL history for a player to score with a single franchise, trailing (Pittsburgh: 690 goals) by 27 goals for the third most by a player with one single franchise. Ovechkin is also six games shy of his 1,100th career game. No other player from the 2004 NHL Draft class has reached the 1,000 game mark.

Streaks' Alive - Alex Ovechkin and John Carlson are entering Sunday’s game on individual point streaks. Ovechkin has recorded a point in seven straight games (5g, 4a). Ovechkin set his personal best point streak last season, with 23 points (17g, 6a) in 14 games from Nov. 16 through Dec. 15, 2018. Carlson, currently on a seven-game point streak (3g, 12a), has recorded a point in all but one game this season. Should Carlson extend his point streak by one more game, he will set a new single-season high (Carlson: seven games, Dec. 10 through Dec. 21, 2015: 2g-6a)

One of Three - Through 10 games, John Carlson (3g, 15a) leads the NHL in points and assists. Only two other defensemen in NHL history have recorded as many points through their team’s opening 10 games of a season: (2g, 16a, 18 points in 1969-70 and 5g, 13a, 18 points in 1973-74, with Boston) and Paul Coffey (3g, 17a, 20 points in 1988-89, with Pittsburgh).

Road Warriors - The Capitals hold a 4-1-0 record on the road this season, the most wins and points in the NHL. The Capitals recorded four wins in their first five road games for the fourth time in franchise history (also: 1991-92, 1997-98, 2015-15). The Capitals' hold a record of 99-53-17 on the road over the last five seasons, the most wins and points (215) in the NHL during that span. Alex Ovechkin has scored five of his six goals this season on the road. His 335 career regular-season road goals are the seventh-most in NHL history, trailing (346) by 11 goals for the sixth most away goals in NHL history.

Former Flames - Garnet Hathaway returns to Calgary for the first time as a Capital. Hathaway played in 175 games for Calgary from 2015-16 to 2018-19, recording 40 points (16g, 24a). This season, Hathaway is tied for second in the NHL in points (2g, 3a) among players who average under 12 minutes of ice time (11:34 TOI). Additionally, Hathaway's 1.73 drawn penalties per 60 minutes of five- on-five play over the last three seasons ranks third in the NHL among players with at least 100 games played during that span. Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan recorded 70 points (35g, 35a) in 134 games with Calgary from 1988-89 to 1990-91, helping Calgary win their franchise's first and only Stanley Cup in 1989. Since 2014-15, MacLellan's first year as general manager, the Capitals have recorded the most win (259) and points (562) in the NHL and have won a Stanley Cup, two Presidents’ Trophies and four consecutive Metropolitan Division titles.

QUICK HITS Holtbeast - Braden Holtby made 41 saves against the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday, the 11th time in his career he's made at least 40 saves, the most by a Capital this season and tied for the eighth-most saves a goalie has made in the NHL this season. Over the last two games, Holtby has earned two wins and has recorded a 2.50 and a .931 save percentage.

Super Swede - Nicklas Backstrom currently has 649 career assists, which is tied with Daniel Sedin for the fifth most in NHL history by a Swedish-born player. Additionally, Backstrom, who has 881 career points (233g, 648a), is now five points shy of passing Peter Forsberg (885) for the seventh-most points by a Swedish-born player.

Big Willy - Tom Wilson scored the game-winning goal on Sunday against the Chicago Blackhawks, his third goal of the season. Wilson is one of two players in the NHL (New York's Mika Zibanejad) with a power play goal, a shorthanded goal and a game-winning goal. Additionally, Wilson's eight penalty minutes through the first 10 games of the season are tied for the lowest amount of penalty minutes he's recorded in his first 10 games of the season in his career (2015-16).

Power Osh - T.J. Oshie has three power play goals in his last two games and has recorded the game's first goal in each effort. His four power play goals leads the Capitals and are tied for the third most in the NHL.

Block Party - The Capitals blocked 31 shots against the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday, which is the third most blocked shots in a single game since the NHL began recording blocked shots in the 1997-98 season (34 blocks, April 9, 2013 at ; 33 blocks, Feb. 4, 2016 vs. New York Rangers) and the second most by a team this season (Islanders: 33 on Oct. 19 at Columbus).

Heavy Hitters - The Capitals' 235 hits this season are the fourth-most in the NHL. The Capitals' 38 hits against the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday were the most they've recorded in a single game this season and the tied for the 14th-most in any NHL game this season. Over an 82-game span, Washington is on pace for 1,927 hits, which would be the sixth-most hits they've thrown in a single season since the NHL began tracking hits in 1997-98.

Strong Seconds - The Capitals have scored a goal in every second period this season, outscoring opponents 15 to 4, the highest second period goal differential in the NHL.

No Quit - Dmitry Orlov has played in 356-consecutive games, all with the Capitals, the sixth-longest active streak in the NHL. No other Capital has more than 100.

Dishing with Hags - Carl Hagelin recorded two assists on Sunday, his second multi-assist game as a member of the Capitals. It also marked his 14th career multi-assist game and his 42nd career multi-point game.

All That Power - Over the last six games, the Capitals are eight for 21 on the power play (38.1 percent), ranking fourth in the NHL since Oct. 10. This season, the Capitals are 6-1-0 when they score a power play goal.

Lar-Star - Lars Eller is five games shy of his 700th career game. He will become just the second Danish-born player to reach the 700 game mark (Frans Nielsen).

Models of Consistency - The Capitals have scored a goal in 19 of their last 21 periods of hockey, including seven periods with at least two goals.

ADDITIONAL CAPITALS NOTES Flame Out - Nicklas Backstrom has earned 21 points (7g, 14a) in 17 career games and has tallied seven points in his last eight games against the Flames (10/20/15-2/1/19: 3g, 4a).
