FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MAY 13, 2021 COLORADO AVALANCHE OVERTAKE VEGAS GOLDEN KNIGHTS TO WIN PRESIDENTS’ TROPHY Avalanche finish as No. 1 seed in NHL standings for third time in franchise history NEW YORK (May 13, 2021) – The Colorado Avalanche have claimed the Presidents’ Trophy as the team with the best overall record, winning their final game of the 2020-21 regular- season to overtake the Honda West Division rival Vegas Golden Knights. The Avalanche (39-13-4, 82 points) clinched the third Presidents’ Trophy in franchise history (also 1996-97 and 2000-01) with a victory against the Los Angeles Kings Thursday to pull ahead of the Golden Knights (40-14-2, 82 points). Colorado finished as the top seed by virtue of the regulation wins tiebreaker (COL: 35, VGK: 30). Colorado’s rise to the top of the NHL standings was aided by a 15-game point streak that spanned from March 10 to April 5 (13-0-2) and fell one shy of the franchise record set in 2000-01 – the last time they won the Presidents’ Trophy (and the Stanley Cup). The Avalanche, who had a 4-3-1 head-to-head record against the Golden Knights in 2020-21 (VGK: 4-4-0), then concluded the regular season with a five-game winning streak and franchise record-tying 17-game home point streak (16-0-1 from March 10 to May 13). Colorado is the fifth franchise to win the Presidents’ Trophy three or more times since its inception in 1985-86, following the Detroit Red Wings (6), Boston Bruins (3), Washington Capitals (3) and New York Rangers (3).

Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips October 17, 2017 Hockey helps the healing as tourists, expats hit Vegas for Sabres' first visit The Buffalo News By Mike Harrington October 16, 2017 LAS VEGAS — The sign is in every travel brochure you see for Sin City. "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Nevada" is its simple greeting as tourists walk up to take pictures and cars whiz by heading down Las Vegas Boulevard to The Strip. A beacon in the desert, the sign has a much deeper meaning these days. It's become the site of the unofficial memorial for the lives lost in the mass shooting that took place here Oct. 1. When Stephen Paddock opened fire from an upper floor at Mandalay Bay on a crowd of 22,000 concertgoers at the Route 91 Harvest Festival across the street, he left 58 people dead and more than 500 injured in the worst act of gun violence on American soil. The shocking massacre has left an indelible mark on a city that always has out its 24-hour welcome mat. ADVERTISEMENT The Sabres will play their first game here against the expansion Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday night in T-Mobile Arena, less than a mile from the site of the shooting. Many fans from Buffalo and Western New York expats will be in the stands. But whether they live here or are just visiting, their trip to see their favorite team is no longer about just a hockey game. "This community is still hurting, really hurting," said Brian Blessing, the longtime Buffalo television broadcaster who has been a sport talk radio host here since 2005.

THE ALBERTA PROVINCE TAX SPECIFICALLY TARGETS PROFESSIONAL HOCKEY PLAYERS IN ORDER TO HELP FINANCE ITS PROFESSIONAL FRANCHISES ALAN POGROSZEWSKI In the fall of 2002, the Canadian province of Alberta implemented a 12.5% tax on all income earned by National Hockey League (NHL) players 1 who play games in the province's two NHL cities of Edmonton and Calgary. This first-in-Canada tax on professional hockey players is designed to help the province's struggling NHL teams, without using the province's taxpayer money.2 The tax, which will apply only to NHL players, and will not apply to coaches, trainers, or visiting management, is expected to result in a gross revenue stream of U.S. $5,000,000.00 per year,3 which will be made available to the teams, less the cost of administration.
