Ethnic Studies Review (ESR) Is the Journal of the National Association for Ethnic Studies (NAES) The National Association for Ethnic Studies Ethnic Studies Review (ESR) is the journal of the National Association for Ethnic Studies (NAES). ESR is a multi-disciplinary international journal devoted to the study of ethnicity, ethnic groups and their cultures, and intergroup relations. NAES has as its basic purpose the promotion of activities and scholarship in the field of Ethnic Studies. The Association is open to any person or institution and serves as a forum for its members in promoting research, study, and curriculum as well as producing publications of interest in the field. EDITOR'S NOTE This issue of Ethnic Studies Review reflects the important critical work being done in the field of ethnic literature, an indication that this literature is getting the attention it deserves. Professor Helen Lock appropriately opens this issue with "Getting into the Game: The Trickster in American Ethnic Fiction." One could argue that the trickster is the most important single figure in ethnic literature, a figure bewildering and won­ derfully complex, and as Lock shows, one who destroys ethnic and racial stereotypes. Professor Robert Nowatzki in "Middle Pa ssage to Freedom: Black Atlantic Consciousness in Charles Johnson's Middle Passage and S. I. Martin's Incomparable World" continues the breakdown of stereotypes as he explores the complex identities of black slaves and those who have succeeded them (such as Phillis Wheatley, Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix) as a result of their contact with other cultures or what he calls "cultural blending." Professor C)zlem Gorey in '' 'The Story You Were Telling Us': Redefinition of Love in Alice Walker's By the Light of My Father's Smile through Luce Irigaray" undertakes another study of the familial relationships that are so often Walker's subject, this time through the theories of French feminist Luce Irigaray. Lindsey Clair Smith confronts a body of earlier American Literature (including works of William Faulkner) that deals with mulatto characters and the tragedies they live in "Transcending the Tragic Mulatto" where she discusses recent American Literature (Leslie Silko, Toni Morrison, Clarence Major) that may reveal a truer "melting pot" than the early mythical one. The multi-racial characters these writers bring into being add sub­ stantially to the dynamic, the complexities, and the interest of American life. In "Chinatown Black Tigers: Black Masculinity and Chinese Heroism in Frank Chin's Gunga Din Highway" Professor Crystal S. Anderson tackles the issue of masculinity in the United States and how Chin in mirroring another culture critiques and helps to define his own. In '''Time Is Not a River': The Implications of Mumbo Jumbo'S Pendulum Chronology for Coalition Politics" Tamiko Fiona Nimura discusses the implications of Ismael Reed's use of time as an extension of and an addition to history and the fact that opening up our understanding of time will add to our ability to understand the composition of cultures other than our own. The environment of Mumbo Jumbo also offers another opportunity for the trickster figure to appear. Professors Carmen Haydee Rivera, Darlene Pagan, and Ozlem Ogut discuss the work of Latina writers, Sandra Cisneros, Ana Castillo, Lorna Dee Cervantes, Christine Garcia, and Julia Alvarez who are presenting some of the most interesting and insightful literature today. These far-ranging discussions of their work are important for critical work being done in Latina stud­ ies. This collection of essays includes a broad range of ethnicities and an international flavor that will expand the range of Ethnic Studies. Ethnic Studies Review Volume 26: 1 CONTRIBUTORS Helen Lock is Professor of English at the University of Louisiana at Monroe where she teaches and writes on American, African American, and multicultural literature. She is the author of A Case of Mis-Taken Identity: Detective Undercurrents in Recent African American Fiction and numerous articles. Robert Nowatzki is Assistant Professor of English at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. He is currently working on a book-length project that analyzes the ideologically ambiguous representations of African Americans in blackface minstrelsy and abolitionism in the United States and in Britain during the nine­ teenth century. Ozlem Corey is a graduate of Bogazi<;i University. She received her MA from Leicester University, U.K. in Mass Communication Research. In 2000 she completed her PhD, and her dissertation is "Three Sibyls on a Tripod: Revisionary Mythmaking in the Poetry of H.D., Sylvia Plath, and Adrienne Rich," at the University of Leicester, U.K. Her current research interests are feminist literary theory, African American studies, mythology and contemporary poetry. She is at present teaching at Bogazi<;i University in the Department of Western Languages and Literatures. Lindsey Claire Smith is currently a Teaching Fellow in the English Department and Assistant for American Indian Recruitment in the Graduate School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is of Chickasaw descent, and her research interests include the relationship between African Americans and American Indians in literature. At the 2003 NAES conference she was the recipient of the Phillips G. Davies Graduate Student Paper competition. Crystal S. Anderson is Assistant Professor in the Department of ii English at Ohio University. She currently is working on a book­ length manuscript on racial discourse in African American and Chinese American novels. She has a forthcoming publication on African Americans, Asian Americans, and the Black Arts Movement. Tamiko Nimura is a 2003 Ford Foundation Dissertation

    Queer Theory, Ethno/Musicology, and the Disorientation of the Field Steven Moon We spend significant time and space in our academic lives positioning ourselves: within the theory of the field, in regard to the institution, within networks of interlocutors, scholars, performers, and so on. We are likewise trained to critique those positions, to identify modes of power in their myriad manifestations, and to work towards more equitable methods and theory. That is, we constantly are subject to attempts of disciplinary orienta- tion, and constantly negotiate forms of re-orientation. Sara Ahmed reminds us that we might ask not only how we are oriented within our discipline, but also about 1) how the discipline itself is oriented, and 2) how orien- tation within sexuality shapes how our bodies extend into space (2006). This space—from disciplinary space, to performance space, to the space of fieldwork and the archive—is a boundless environment cut by the trails of the constant reorientation of those before us. But our options are more than the dichotomy between “be oriented” and “re-orient oneself.” In this essay, I examine the development of the ethno/musicologies’ (queer) theoretical borrowings from anthropology, sociology, and literary/cultural studies in order to historicize the contemporary queer moment both fields are expe- riencing and demonstrate the ways in which it might dis-orient the field. I trace the histories of this queer-ing trend by beginning with early concep- tualizations of the ethno/musicological projects, scientism, and quantita- tive methods. This is in relation to the anthropological method of ethno- cartography in order to understand the historical difficulties in creating a queer qualitative field, as opposed to those based in hermeneutics.

    Introduction: You've Got to Be Jazzistic hriving on a Riff is a contribution to the growing body of work on jazz, I blues, and their multiple influences in other forms of African American and American culture. The provisional term for this relatively new area of dis• course is jazz studies, although there may be a case for Sun Ra's tongue-in-cheek neologism "jazzisticology," which (considered etymologically) appears to mean the study of the "jazzistic," in other words, that which aspires, or pertains, to being like, about, or in the style of, jazz.1 While jazzisticology seems unlikely to catch on, it does have the advantage of marking a distinction between the study of jazz itself (in a nuts-and-bolts musicological sense) and the study of things that are jazz related. Thriving on a Riff belongs to the latter category and sharpens its focus further to examine two of the many cultural forms affected by African American music: literature and film. While that music has become hugely popular and influential far beyond the communities that produced it, its role within African American culture has been especially profound. Numerous black writers have confirmed this: from James Baldwin's bald assertion, "It is only in his music ... that the Negro in America has been able to tell his story," to Bob Kaufman's more poetic coinage: Dirt of a world covers me My secret heart Beating to unheard jazz.2 This recognition of the music's crucial importance, both to African American culture and beyond, can be traced back to W.

    The Making and Unmaking of Ethnic Boundaries: A Multilevel Process Theory1 Andreas Wimmer University of California, Los Angeles Primordialist and constructivist authors have debated the nature of ethnicity “as such” and therefore failed to explain why its charac- teristics vary so dramatically across cases, displaying different de- grees of social closure, political salience, cultural distinctiveness, and historical stability. The author introduces a multilevel process theory to understand how these characteristics are generated and trans- formed over time. The theory assumes that ethnic boundaries are the outcome of the classificatory struggles and negotiations between actors situated in a social field. Three characteristics of a field—the institutional order, distribution of power, and political networks— determine which actors will adopt which strategy of ethnic boundary making. The author then discusses the conditions under which these negotiations will lead to a shared understanding of the location and meaning of boundaries. The nature of this consensus explains the particular characteristics of an ethnic boundary. A final section iden- tifies endogenous and exogenous mechanisms of change. Questioning one's own sanity. Weird time signatures. Experimental sounds. In 1973, Pink Floyd was a somewhat known progressive rock band, but it was this, their ninth album, that catapulted them into world class rock-star status. “The Dark Side of the Moon” spent an astonishing 14 years on the “Billboard” album charts, and sold an estimated 45 million copies. It is a work of outstanding artistry, skill, and craftsmanship that is popular in its reach and experimental in its grasp. An engineering masterpiece, the album received a Grammy nomination for best engineered non-classical recording, based on beautifully captured instrumental tones and a warm, lush soundscape. COURSE DESCRIPTION An introduction to poetry written in English during the latter half of the twentieth century, this course will examine some key developments in poetic style and sensibility after modernism. Our readings and discussions will address both the sound and the sense of poems. We will look closely at linguistic elements such as diction, syntax, and rhythm, considering the ways postwar poets distinguished themselves from their modernist predecessors. Additionally, course discussion will focus on postwar movements and schools such as confessional poetry, the Beats, the New York school, and the Black Arts movement, as well as trends in postcolonial and ethnic- American poetry. COURSE REQUIREMENTS Papers You will write three papers for this course: two shorter papers (3-4 pages or 900-1200 words) and a longer final paper (10-12 pages or 3000-3600 words). The first two papers will present close readings of several poems based only on your own reading (i.e. no secondary sources). The final paper will explore a theme or trend in the work of two or three poets, and it must incorporate at least two but no more than five secondary sources.
