If the Norwich, England, records are correct, he was born in England, in the year 1629, and of course was not far from four years of age when the family came to the Colonies in 1633. He seems to have possessed the spirt, and to have shared the fortunes of his brother Christopher. With him, he appears at Saybrook, where in October 1653, he married Sarah, daughter of John Clarke, of Saybrook, and later of Milford,CT. In 1660, he joins the colonists who settled Norwich, and therce foreward stands among the first of that important settlement, both in church and state. Here his house lot was also in a central and commanding position, and the records show him to have been a large land-holder, and in wordly matters, and enterprising man. He was chosed, soon after the removal to Norwich, deacon of Mr. Fitch's church, in which office he served with acceptance, until, in consequence of his infirmities, he was succeeded by his son, in 1696. In 1674, he, with that other veteran and tried pioneers, Thomas Leffingwell, represented Norwich in the general court, and he again was a member of the body in 1685. In 1686, the town granted him and his sons thirty acres of pasture, westward of Goodman Sluman. In 1690, and again in 1696, he was the townsman. In 1694, he was appointed a committee to treat with Mr. Jabez Fitch, with respect to his helping and succeeding his father in the work of the ministry. In the same year he was also on a committee to search out and report on the deficiencies in the records. In 1696, he was one of the committee to scat the meeting house. In 1700, he was appointed on a commission to deed, anew, lands about whose title disputes had arisen, or would be likely to arise. In 1703, April 27, he and his son Simon deed away thirty acres of pasture land west of the great plans, to John Gifford. The following record is copied from the Windham probate records. Notes for Samuel Huntington: Per Huntington Family in America, page 690: "Samuel Huntington moved with his wife to Lebanon, CT, in 1700, having sold his houselot, and house, in Norwich for a parsonage. He was Deputy to the General Curt from Lebanon in October 1705, and May, 1708; was appointed Lieuteant of the first trainband of Lebanon, in May 1709. Before he moved, he had become a public man, having filled several offices, beingn as easrly as 1692 appointed constable, having already been one of the Townsmen. How ell he was thought of in Norwich, appears from his appointment by the citizens of Norwich, ten years after his removal to Lebanon, on a Committee to locate the new meeting house about which a serious dispute had arisen. The site chosen by the committee was not approved by the town, and the dhurch was erected upon another spot. But a fewyears vindicated the wisdom of the committee, as was abundantly testified by a second church, built upon the place selected by them. He was a large landholder both in Orwich and Lebanon. His wife's name appears on the list of the Lebanon church in 1701, but his own name was not added until 1707. In 1687, February 13, the town of Norwich granted him a parcel ofland at Trading Cove Brook, "by his father's, to be laid out by measure, 30 or 40 rods wide the length of his father's land." 6 Generation 8 (con't) This is more likely.. He married Abigail Northrup, daughter of Moses Northrup and Abigail Cornwall Cornell, on 10 Jun 1744 in Worchestershire, NY25. She was born in 1724 in Beekman, Dutchess26.

Notes for John [Dr.] Calkins: Dr. John Calkin was the first of the family of that name, and was a physician of ability who settled at Cochecton Falls, on the PA side of the Delaware River, about 1757. He came from Connecticut in 1757. One of the company that came with him was Bezaleel Tyler who married his sister, and who became the father of all the Tylers residing along the Delaware. They came from Salem, CT., under the claim of the Delaware Land Company, organized by the authorities of the State of Connecticut. That state laid claim to all the lands west of the Delaware. About 1777, or 1778, Doctor Calkins, his son, Oliver, Captain Tyler, with their families and other Whigs moved to Peenpack and Goshen for safety from the Indians. While there, Oliver joined a company of scouts organized by the Committee of Safety, composed of the Patriots of the Mamakating Valley under the command of Captain Tyler, who was his brother-in-law. He volunteered with the Captain, and Moses Tyler, his neighbor at Cochecton and brother-in-law, to pursue the Indian Chieftain Manat and his Mohawks on their retreat from the destruction of the Peenpack, or Minisink Settlement, and was near the brave Captain, when shot and mortally wounded at this disastrous battle of Minisink of July, 1779. At the close of that battle, Oliver, with his Commander, Colonel Hawthorne, and a few remaining survivors, retreated each man for himself and found his way back to Peenpack. The next year, the Doctor, Oliver, and their families, and some other former residents of Cochecton, returned to their homes. The Doctor and his wife residing with or near his son Oliver, until after the latter's death in 1787, and then went back to Salem, CT, where he died in 1791.

Per the SAR Application of Valleau Charles Curtis, Oliver Calkin, Private, Cochecton, Company, 2nd Ulster County Regiment, New York State Militia, participated in the Battle of Minisink July 22, 1779, under Captain Bezeleel Tyler III.

Quotation from "Damascus Manor" Alsup Vail Tyler, Delaware Valley News, Narrowsburg, NY: "The result of this battle, July 22, 1779, was disastrous to the patriots; som 40 lost their lives, and for years their bons lay bleaching in the wilderness. Colonel Tusten (**), in making his report of this battle speaks of Tyler as "The Brave Captain Tyler." His brother-in-law, Moses Thomas was also killed in this battle; another brother-in-law, Oliver Calkins escaped."

** This is an error, because Doctor Tusten died at Minisink, and the report referred to in this article was made by Colonel Hathorn

Notes for Bezaleel Tyler:

7 Generation 8 (con't) Notes for Bezaleel Tyler: Source: from EARLY HISTORICAL EVENTS IN THE DELAWARE VALLEY, by John T. Bradley ; ( A series of historical articles of interest to everyone who resides in the Delaware section of the county ); History books, Wayne Independent, Census records. Lived at Big Island in Delaware per Bradley, north of Damascus in 1764, moved to Cochecton Valley in 1754. Per Burban Letter, born about 1715, had several sons who were soldiers in Revolution. Bezaleel and Moses were in the Revolution, two others ran Manor Co., saw mill and grist mills Reference: "The Pumpkin Vine" of Sharon, CT and Cochecton, NY per First Families of America p.12 The Tyler family descendants and forebearers had much to do in making the history of the Upper Delaware section and is closely allied to the Ross family by marital ties. These brothers-in-law came here at the solicitation of Joseph Greswald, who purchased an unusually large tract of land extending eastward from the Delaware. Bezaleel was a Justice of the Peace in Sharon. He moved to Sharon about 1730. This area was located right on the border of Cutchess County, NY, about 10 miles south of the line. He and his family moved to Oblong, Dutchess County, New York. They, along with Dr. John Calkin, and Joseph Skinner moved to Cushetunk, now Cochecton Township, Sullivan County, NY, in c1754. Dr. Calkin settled near the Cochecton Falls.Dr. Calkin was the first man to practice medicine in this section of the Delaware. Tyler settled at what is now Damascus and Skinner settled on St. Tammany Flats. The family lived near the creek that enters the Delaware River in the middle of the large island (Plum Island or Big Island ) just north of the big bend in the river, formerly Tyler's Eddy, and about 1 mile northeast of Cochecton. The Indians called Capt. Tyler, Capt. Mush. When the settlers came from Connecticut to Cushetunk, which mean "falling of foaming waters" in the language of the locak Indians, they took little notice of whether they were living in New York, Pennsylvania or New Jersey. To them it was all Connecticut as granted to their governor by the King. By 1798, the are on the west side of the delaware River became Wayne County, PA and was call Damascus. per Arthur Meyers: Bezaleel and Sarah Calkins, sister of Dr. Calkins, had 22 children of whom 14 lived to grow up -8 son 6 daughters. Capt. Tyler was a man whom the Tories and Indians feared greatly. I have heard my mothers oldest sister say that when the Indians would come to his house and acted badly, he would take them up and throw them over the door; they had in those day double doors, the upper half would be open and the lower one shut. In Nov 1762 the Indians attacked the little settlement on the Delaware River. At that time there were only sixteen families there scattered up and down the river. They had 2 blockhouses. They fought off the Indians at the lower blockhouse. Bezaleel Tyler lived in the Upper settlement, had at that time ten children, the eldest twenty years old and the youngest about six months, with these he made his escape through the woods. Night soon overtook them and they struck up a fire and encamped for the night. Here they were overtaken by Nat Evans and family, Master Fry and young Moses Thomas. These all got through the woods safely without any incident worthy of notice. The settlers were not bothered by Indians again until 1777 during the Revolutionary War. In 1764 they were living north of Damascus, Wayne County, PA. Sarah died on 4 May 1791 in Wayne County, PA. During his latter years Bezaleel lived with his son Charles at Cochecton, Sullivan County, NY where he died on 29 June 1796 by drinking pearl ash or potash. He is buried at Damascus or in the Old Cochecton Cemetery? Bezaleel's son, Bazaleel, 2nd, broke the Tyler record with a minority of six children, came to Cochecton Valley, married a sister of Dr. John Calkin. MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE AREA: The boundaries of the colonies at this time were much disputed. In 1754 a group of Connecticut colonists under the sanction of the Connecticut Colony had obtained deeds to a tract of land extending from east of the Delaware River west to the Susquehanna River, to be known as "Wyoming". These deeds were signed by many Indian chiefs, but not all the local Indians agreed to the deed. This was to create a great deal of trouble for the colonists. The Tyler family arrived on the Delaware River about 1760 shortly after the Thomas, Calkin and Skinner families. Already there or arriving

8 Generation 8 (con't) shortly after the Thomas, Calkin and Skinner families. Already there or arriving about the same time were the Conklin, and Mitchell families. These families have intermarried many times over the years. There was almost a war between the Colonies of Pennsylvania and Connecticut as to who really had jurisdiction over the land. Before a resolution was reached the Colonies joined together in 1776 to declare their independence from Great Britain. Most of the adult men in the above families served in the military during the Revolutionary War of 1776 to 1781. Most fought on the side of the Colonies and were very proud to have helped their country achieve independence. The Cochecton area suffered greatly during the War, many men, women and children were killed, homes were burned, and crops were destroyed and/or confiscated. There was much guerilla warfare as many of the neighbors were "Tories" and sided with the British. Most of the men were away in the army and the woman and children suffered the most, and there was always the fear of starvation.. A battle in the fought on July 3 1778 became know as the "Wyoming Massacre" for obvious reasons. The battle was fought near Wilkes Barre, Luzerne County, PA. The Wyoming Valley, a 20-mile long crescent shaped valley along the Susquehanna River was settled by people from Connecticut, organized as the Susquehanna Company starting in 1769. It was the object of a bitter dispute between the Colonies of Pennsylvania and Connecticut. During the American Revolution a force of British and Indians numbering 1100 men, led by John Butler and his Butler's Rangers, descended on the valley. Most of the able bodied men among the settlers had joined the American , there remained about 300, mostly old men and boys, who gathered at Forty Fort, near Wilkes Barre, for the defense. Two thirds of the defenders were slain in battle, and many of the survivors who surrendered were also killed. Among the Tyler family members who died were: Nathan Chapman and Sarah (Tyler) Lassley ??[doubtful per Karlyn Lassley Bev Green] Another battle fought in the Revolution was the Battle of Minisink, also known as Lackawaxen. This was fought on 22/23 July 1779 at Minisink, about 16 miles south of Cochecton on the Delaware River at the ford where the Lackawaxen and Minisink Rivers empty into the Delaware River. About 90 patriots came upon Brandt's British and Indian Army of 300 men as they were crossing the river. The British called their men back from the river and turned to oppose the Americans. The Americans formed a square on a hill and were soon surrounded by the British. When asked to surrender the Americans would not. They fought for 6 hours under the boiling sun before the British broke through and massacred the ones who could not flee, including Dr Tusten and his 17 wounded. Only 30 Americans escaped. The people at Cushetunk fled the area fearful of what the Indians would do to the women and children. The bodies were left where they fell not to be buried until much later. Many family members participated in the battle, members who died there were: Moses Thomas I,I Bezaleel Tyler III, Dr John Calkin, Captain Benjamin Vail. There is a bronze tablet in the Sullivan County Courthouse in Monticello with the names of many of the Sullivan County residents who served in the Revolutionary War. There are more Tylers on it than any other 3 families combined. And this does not include the Tylers who lived on the other side of the river in Pennsylvania. Many of those are listed on the DAR Monument in the park across from the Wayne County Hospital on the Lackawaxen River. iii. ELIJAH CALKINS was born between 09 Feb 1727-1728 in Lebanon, CT29. iv.
