  • WHERE DID HUGH COME FROM? by Margaret Amundson
WHERE DID HUGH COME FROM? By Margaret Amundson In the past, several different family historians have offered theories explaining where they thought Hugh was from in Europe. One such theory was advanced by the Reverend French Forrest, a descendant of Hugh's in answer to a Richmond Times Dispatch weekly genealogy column, popular at the turn of the last century.1[1] He said in the article the Frenches were from Rosscommon County, Ireland. Rudimentary attempts have been made to prove or disprove this theory, without results. Others have advanced the theory that he was related somehow to the George Mason family and point to the use of Mason as a given name, in the French family and French in the Mason family, as evidence of this relationship. Certainly the George Mason of Gunston Hall Family, clearly had a reason for using French as a given name. George1 Mason's mother was Ann French. His first wife is said to have been Mary French. There is evidence she was named Mary,2[2] however, nowhere is there a record that identifies her as nee French. This theory was probably advanced long before the authors of The Five George Masons, discovered the record in England showing Ann French married George1 Mason's father. Thomas Mason, his father, was a yeoman farmer in the village of Pershore, in the Vale of Eveshame, Worcestershire, England.3[3] No creditable evidence establishing a kinship tie between these two families has been found.4[4] There was not the web of interconnecting relationships typical of community structure between this Mason and French family.

Dennis: Criminal Law as Family Law CRIMINAL LAW AS FAMILY LAW Andrea L. Dennis* INTRODUCTION Paul wanted to live with either his mother or his girlfriend in his old neighborhood, but his supervision officer told him he could not live in the neighborhood because that is where he would get in trouble. Instead, Paul lived in a three-quarter rooming house, hoping his mom or girlfriend would soon move so he could live with one of them.1 James wanted to visit his daughter who lived out of state, but his supervision officer would not authorize the travel.2 Alex was arrested on a parole-violation warrant while at the hospital with his girlfriend awaiting the birth of their child.3 Chuck worried that when he visited with his daughter at a court- supervised daycare, police would arrest him in front of his daughter for a warrant violation.4 The stories of Paul, James, Alex, and Chuck—all of whom were being supervised in the community as part of a criminal case—reveal the extent to which the criminal justice system can interfere with family life and family autonomy.5 Their stories, though, are but a small sample of what individuals and families under criminal justice control experience.

THE LYONS FAMILY Assem bled by CHARLTON HAVARD LYONS for His Grandchildren This Genealogy is based on data from Dr. G. M. G. Stafford's: GENERAL LEROY AUGUSTUS STAFFORD, A GENEALOGY, and Annie Elizabeth Miller's: OUR FAMILY CIRCLE, and from members of the family and other sources. Letters from Dr. G. M. G. Stafford to C. H. Lyons 1165 Stanford Avenue Baton Rouge, Louisiana June 10, 1948 "My dear Charlton: "Many thanks for your recent letters relative to my genealogical efforts. We old fellows do not get many tokens of commendation especially where our 'hobbies' are concerned, such as your letter expressed, but they are al- ways gratefully received and are very soothing to our pride. We are told that pride was the cause of the fall of Lucifer and his fellow angels, so it is not a new essence in the makeup of God's creatures, and therefore we should not be held too culpable in still retaining a little of it. I have certainly en- joyed my genealogical work. It has been a great source of pleasure to me through these years of my retirement. Always being of an active tempera- ment I just had to have an outlet to a naturally restless disposition, and genealogy, in which I was always interested, came as a great solace to me. "We have a fine lot of forebears, from those uncompromising old Puri- tans of New England to those hot-blooded Southerners of Virginia and South Carolina. When old Grandpa Wright came to the 'Deep South' and married a girl whose progenitors had never been farther north than South Carolina, he mingled two strains of very different elements, and we are the result- and according to my way of thinking, not too bad a sample of good Americanism.
