Course Outline | Fall Semester 2015 POL 612 Arab Contributions to Political Thought Program Core Compulsory Course Course Teacher/s: Dr. Mark Farha and Team Credit Value: 3 Pre-requisites: No pre-requisites Co-requisites: SOSH 601, POL 611 Course Duration: 14 weeks; Semester 1 Total Student Study Time: 126 hours, including 42 contact hours of lectures and seminars. AIMS This course has a dual aim: 1) to introduce students to major Arab contributions to political thought across history, and 2) to temper (if not transcend) the Eurocentrism of most modern courses in political thought. It also seeks to challenge and inspire students to aspire to make their own contributions to political thought, first by providing role models who have made significant contributions. No less important, however, is to provide students with a critical view of Arab political thought and pointing out the gaps and shortcomings that remain to be overcome. The course starts by highlighting major contributions to political thought in the classical age, including by figures like al-Farabi, Ibn Khaldun, and moveson to the contributions and debates in the era of Nahda by the likes of Tahtawi, Afghani, Abduh, Farah Anton, and Taha Hussain, among others. It then moves to modern intellectual contributions by figures like Edward Said, Sadiq al Azm, Adunis, Samir Amin, Anouar Abd al-Malki, Aziz al Azmeh, Hisham Sharabi, Nazih Ayubi, and Fouad Ajami, among others. The course also covers major themes which preoccupied modern Arab political thought, including the theme of political identity, nationalism, Arab unity, liberation, religious revivalism and secularization, sectarianism, democracy, social justice, etc. -

HIS 381: The Forgotten Queens of Islam Fall 2019 Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11:00 AM – 12:15 PM Main Hall 402 Syllabus Professor: Dr. Elizabeth Urban Office: Wayne Hall 713 EMail: [email protected] Office Hours: TBA Phone: (610) 436-2541 Course Description: For the Past 1,400 years, woMen have had a Profound iMPact on institutions and ideologies in the Islamic world. They have Mastered branches of knowledge, Produced works of culture, amassed wealth, and eVen ruled as queens. In this course, students will read about ProMinent women's lives in historical texts froM the Islamic world, focusing on the Period froM 600–1700 CE. Students will learn to read these historical texts "against the grain" through the lens of feMinist history, which uses feMale PersPectiVes to reframe and reconfigure our understanding of the Past. By the end of the course, students will be equiPPed to analyze the Various forMs of Power that have historically been available (and unavailable) to woMen the Islamic Middle East, and to assess the Many ways woMen have navigated unequal Power structures in order to ParticiPate in their Polities. The course will also equiP students to articulate an informed, reasoned oPenness to differences related to issues such as: gender roles, family structures (including concubinage and polygyny), clothing/veiling, sex segregation (including the hareM institution), sexuality, and legal status (particularly, the Many complex Meanings of slaVery and freedom). This course challenges students to MoVe beyond siMPle, binary thinking when considering woMen froM the Islamic Middle East. Such woMen have neVer been either PassiVe, oPPressed VictiMs on the one hand, or fully liberated, agentiVe indiViduals on the other. -

Hartmann _________________________ Adviser Professor Ellen Fleischmann Department of History ABSTRACT This dissertation exposes important junctures between feminism, imperialism, and orientalism by investigating the encounter between Western and Middle Eastern feminists in the first-wave international women’s movement. I focus primarily on the International Alliance of Women for Suffrage and Equal Citizenship, and to a lesser extent, the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom. By examining the interaction and exchanges among Western and Middle Eastern women (at conferences and through international visits, newsletters and other correspondence), as well as their representations of “East” and “West,” this study reveals the conditions of and constraints on the potential for feminist solidarity across national, cultural, and religious boundaries. In addition to challenging the notion that feminism in the Middle East was “imposed” from outside, it also complicates conventional wisdom about the failure of the first-wave international women’s movement to accommodate difference. Marriage to Umm Habiba Tension in Mecca Had Reached Its Peak
limited the number of women a man could marry - the customary practice in pre-Islamic Arabia - and encouraged monogamy, allowed for God’s Messenger to marry several women in order for him to reach all his addressees in their entirety within as short a time as twenty-three years. The Messenger of God made use of this means in loosening such closely knit ties at a time when all the doors on which he knocked were slammed shut in his face. Moreover, it is not possible to suppose that the marriages of God’s Messenger, who stated, “God has assuredly willed that I marry only those who are of Paradise,”339 and who took his each and every step in line with the Divine injunctions, could be realized except by God's permission. Within this context, he states: “Each of my marriages and those of my daughters was conducted as a result of Divine permission conveyed to me through Gabriel.”340 In this way was he able to come together, on the basis of kinship, with those people who were not capable of being approached, and it was in these assemblies that the hearts of those who were consumed with hatred and enmity were softened. The marriages of God’s Messenger functioned as a bridge in his communication with them, and served to relax the atmosphere as well as legitimize his steps in their regard. He extended hospitality towards them, invited them to his wedding feasts using his marriages as a means to come together, and sent them gifts, drawing attention to their affinity. -

Abi Taalib [a] • Hajar al-Aswad (The Black Stone) • Maqam Ibrahim • Hijr Ismail. This was the location of the house of Prophet Ismael [a]. He and his mother are buried here. He denied access to anyone because he did not like it to be walked on. Other prophets are buried in this place also. According to Imam Baqir [a], the place between Rukn and Maqam is full of graves of the Prophets. According to Imam Sadiq [a], seventy prophets are buried between Rukn al-Aiman and Hajar al-Aswad • Well of Zamzam • Mizabe Rahmah: the golden trough (water channel) between Rukn Iraqi and Rukn Shami • Shadharwan • Mustajar: This is just before Rukn Yamani whilst walking from Rukn Shami to Rukn Yamani. It has also been defined as the area between the Black Stone (hajar al-aswad) and the door of the Ka'aba • Mutaawadh or Multazam: The place between Rukn Yamani and the Black Stone (hajar al-aswad) • Hatwim. According to the book "Adabul Haramain", this is the place between the door of the Ka'aba and Hajar al-Aswad.
