GREATER DOWNTOWN (GDD) ANNUAL REPORT PROJECT: Partner Survey

Goal : To record the collaborations, progress and obstacles of organizations actively working to revitalize the Greater area. Of particular interest is uncovering how each of you presently shares your story.

Please answer the following questions by Friday, December 16th.

(1) Describe your organization and mission. Midtown Detroit Inc. is a nonprofit planning and development organization that supports the physical maintenance and revitalization of the Midtown Detroit neighborhood, while working to enhance public awareness, appreciation and use of the district.

(2) Define your geographic boundaries. Maps are welcome. Does your organization have a definition for ‘Greater Downtown Detroit’? Bounded by the Ford Freeway on the north, the Chrysler Freeway on the east, the Fisher Freeway on the south and the Lodge Freeway on the west. With the start‐up of MDI, the boundaries have expanded to include the New Center area and TechTown bounded by I‐94 to the south, Virginia Park to the north, to the west and Woodward on the east. (See map attached)

(3) What work is commonly referenced to describe your organization’s success?  Beautification/Maintenance – (Median, Flowerbeds, Parks, Trash Pick Up, Graffiti Removal/Powerwashing)  Community Development/Infrastructure – (Sugar Hill Arts District, Agave, Woodward‐Willis, Auburn, Living Cities Initiative, Streetscape, Greenway, Community Gardens, Street Conversion, Lighting – Other Partner Projects)  Planning/Economic Development – (Façade Program, Security Program, Small Business Assistance, Development Assistance/Guidance)  Marketing – (Live Midtown/Live Downtown, Development Package, Neighborhood Guide, Shop Midtown/New Center, Midtown Branding)  Special Events – (, Art X, New Center Park)

Be prepared to discuss these questions during the meeting on December 20th.

(1) What statistics does your organization cite? What are their sources and dates?  Visitorship, Employee, Student Numbers, Hospital Stays – Data collected once year by MDI  Investment Numbers (Institution, Education, Residential, Commercial) – Ongoing data collection  Development Map – Updated as needed  Housing/Commercial Properties Listing & Occupancy – Data collected and updated by MDI as needed (housing updated twice a year)  Midtown/New Center/North End Data – Wide array of data collected (partnership with Data Driven Detroit‐Living Cities)  Business Development Numbers (Open, Expanded, Closed, Planned) – Collected by MDI as needed

(2) Describe the limitations associated with this data. MDI’s statistics on Visitorship, Employee, Students, and Hospital Stays in Midtown is available to the public and accessible on MDI’s website. initiatives undertaken by the organization and is distributed on a case by case basis. Data received through U3 Ventures and the Anchor Strategy is only released with the discretion of U3 Ventures and the Anchors.

(3) What is your data wish list?  Employment and Visitor numbers for small businesses  Sales & Revenue numbers for businesses

Keep these questions in your radar as we progress in our discussions. Answers are welcomed at any time with the objective of producing hard copy responses in the next two months (prior to the production of the first iteration of the Annual Report)

(1) Describe projects impacting GDD since 2008, regardless of their success.  Sugar Hill  Woodward Garden Block  Whole Foods  Residential Developments – Auburn, Studio One  W. Willis Village/W. (2) How do you measure the impact of these projects? What is your methodology? How do you present that work? Who is your audience? Include examples of presentations or product. Every program and initiative is different. For the Live Midtown program we have hard data from the institutions on applicants, as well as mapping prior address to new address, and just recently completed a survey for the first year of the program. In general MDI does not have a proactive data collection process. IF the information is requested or needed per grant requirements we will pull information together. In these cases, MDI will look at level of investment, businesses opened/expanded, number of people hired, and residents moved in. MDI keeps up regularly with information for our Development Packages that includes investment, employee, visitor, etc… numbers, plus a Midtown Development Map.

(3) What collaborations exist between your organizations? Mark and explain. MDI collaborates with all of the organizations listed below.

(4) What kind of systematic changes have come from your work? Examples include changes in policy, process, information, etc. MDI’s work through the Living Cities Initiative has established a framework for data collection/library with D3 that will hopefully be re‐created in the Downtown area and between the three Anchors. MDI also has a been able to expand our communications/outreach to open discussion and dialogue on various projects (TOD, Living Cities, Education, Anchor Strategy).

(5) Explain the challenges in getting work accomplished. The City of Detroit.
