  • Venue & Attraction Development for Grand Rapids
Preliminary Recommendations GRAND ACTION 2.0 VENUE & ATTRACTION DEVELOPMENT FOR GRAND RAPIDS COMBINED PROJECT EXECUTIVE SUMMARY November 20, 2020 Preliminary Recommendations EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Over the past two decades, Grand Rapids has grown from a regional city known for furniture manufacturing to a nationally-recognized destination known for its economic diversification, vibrant arts and gastronomic culture, active downtown, restoration of the Grand River underway, world-class amenities including Meijer Gardens and Millennium Park, and numerous concert and convention venues. In an effort to further develop venue and attraction assets for Grand Rapids, economic development non-profit Grand Action (“Client”) has prioritized investigation into the feasibility of three primary projects: • Investment into DeVos Place Convention Center to maintain and enhance their competitive position in the industry. • Development of a new soccer and entertainment event stadium, designed to host a higher level of professional soccer in Grand Rapids. • Development of a new concert and entertainment event amphitheater, designed with surrounding assets and a configuration to allow for year- round community activity district. We have conducted a highly research-based effort to assess market viability, event demand, financial performance and economic impacts for each of these projects. This Executive Summary highlights the findings of these studies. A listing of the organizations that have participated in the study process is presented at the end of this Summary. Separate reports and executive summaries have been developed for each project, and should be read to gain insight into the research used to support primary project findings and recommendations. Given the dramatic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly on the convention and entertainment event sectors, we first present an overview of potential implications for future venue development in Grand Rapids.

We’re very enthusiastic about this opportunity and confident that it will be a rich experience for the participants. The SEM interns, guided by the pastors, will join a program of action and reflection, sharing work and conversation with one another, and with children, youth, and adults of the church, exploring both “what we believe” and “how we live our faith.” SEM interns will be challenged to develop their own practical theology. There will be specific projects in ministry, occasions for leadership, invitations to be creative, chances for recreation and, every week, a conversation about what we’re learning. The SEM internship is open to CUCC members who are post-secondary students, graduating high school seniors through college. If you know of anyone who would be interested in applying for this opportunity, or have any questions, feel free to contact us directly. Grace and peace, The Rev. David Pattee The Rev. • American Buddhists: Enlightenment and Encounter
CHAPTER FO U R American Buddhists: Enlightenment and Encounter ★ he Buddha’s Birthday is celebrated for weeks on end in Los Angeles. TMore than three hundred Buddhist temples sit in this great city fac- ing the Pacific, and every weekend for most of the month of May the Buddha’s Birthday is observed somewhere, by some group—the Viet- namese at a community college in Orange County, the Japanese at their temples in central Los Angeles, the pan-Buddhist Sangha Council at a Korean temple in downtown L.A. My introduction to the Buddha’s Birthday observance was at Hsi Lai Temple in Hacienda Heights, just east of Los Angeles. It is said to be the largest Buddhist temple in the Western hemisphere, built by Chinese Buddhists hailing originally from Taiwan and advocating a progressive Humanistic Buddhism dedicated to the pos- itive transformation of the world. In an upscale Los Angeles suburb with its malls, doughnut shops, and gas stations, I was about to pull over and ask for directions when the road curved up a hill, and suddenly there it was— an opulent red and gold cluster of sloping tile rooftops like a radiant vision from another world, completely dominating the vista. The ornamental gateway read “International Buddhist Progress Society,” the name under which the temple is incorporated, and I gazed up in amazement. This was in 1991, and I had never seen anything like it in America. The entrance took me first into the Bodhisattva Hall of gilded images and rich lacquerwork, where five of the great bodhisattvas of the Mahayana Buddhist tradition receive the prayers of the faithful.
