1 The Legendary Saga of the Volsungs Cecelia Lefurgy Viking Art and Literature October 4, 2007 Professor Tinkler and Professor Erussard Stories that are passed down through oral and written traditions are created by societies to give meaning to, and reinforce the beliefs, rules and habits of a particular culture. For Germanic culture, The Saga of the Volsungs reflected the societal traditions of the people, as well as their attention to mythology. In the Saga, Sigurd of the Volsung 2 bloodline becomes a respected and heroic figure through the trials and adventures of his life. While many of his encounters are fantastic, they are also deeply rooted in the values and belief structures of the Germanic people. Tacitus, a Roman, gives his account of the actions and traditions of early Germanic peoples in Germania. His narration remarks upon the importance of the blood line, the roles of women and also the ways in which Germans viewed death. In Snorri Sturluson’s The Prose Edda, a compilation of Norse mythology, Snorri Sturluson touches on these subjects and includes the perception of fate, as well as the role of shape changing. Each of these themes presented in Germania and The Prose Edda aid in the formation of the legendary saga, The Saga of the Volsungs. Lineage is a meaningful part of the Germanic culture. It provides a sense of identity, as it is believed that qualities and characteristics are passed down through generations. In the Volsung bloodline, each member is capable of, and expected to achieve greatness. As Sigmund, Sigurd’s father, lay wounded on the battlefield, his wife asked if she should attend to his injuries so that he may avenge her father. -

WAGNER AND THE VOLSUNGS None of Wagner’s works is more closely linked with Old Norse, and more especially Old Icelandic, culture. It would be carrying coals to Newcastle if I tried to go further into the significance of the incom- parable eddic poems. I will just mention that on my first visit to Iceland I was allowed to gaze on the actual manuscript, even to leaf through it . It is worth noting that Richard Wagner possessed in his library the same Icelandic–German dictionary that is still used today. His copy bears clear signs of use. This also bears witness to his search for the meaning and essence of the genuinely mythical, its very foundation. Editors' Introduction Douglas A. Anderson Michael D. C. Drout Verlyn Flieger Tolkien Studies, Volume 7, 2010 Published by West Virginia University Press Editors’ Introduction This is the seventh issue of Tolkien Studies, the first refereed journal solely devoted to the scholarly study of the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. As editors, our goal is to publish excellent scholarship on Tolkien as well as to gather useful research information, reviews, notes, documents, and bibliographical material. In this issue we are especially pleased to publish Tolkien’s early fiction “The Story of Kullervo” and the two existing drafts of his talk on the Kalevala, transcribed and edited with notes and commentary by Verlyn Flieger. With this exception, all articles have been subject to anonymous, ex- ternal review as well as receiving a positive judgment by the Editors. In the cases of articles by individuals associated with the journal in any way, each article had to receive at least two positive evaluations from two different outside reviewers. Reviewer comments were anonymously conveyed to the authors of the articles. The Editors agreed to be bound by the recommendations of the outside referees. The Editors also wish to call attention to the Cumulative Index to vol- umes one through five of Tolkien Studies, compiled by Jason Rea, Michael D.C. Drout, Tara L. Norwegian American Genealogical Center & Naeseth Library Annual Report 2010 NORWEGIAN AMERICAN GENEALOGICAL CENTER , I NC . 2010 A NNUAL REPORT GREETING FROM THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS My board colleagues and I offer our gratitude to the growing constituency who supported NAGC & NL during 2010, a year of important accomplishments and well-deserved recognition. Throughout this period, our membership, board, staff, volunteers, and many friends have all contributed greatly to our success. In late August, the Norwegian Government and H.M. Harald V, King of Norway, recognized Blaine Hedberg’s lifelong contri - butions by awarding Blaine the St. Olav Medal. The citation described his “…active works to promote knowledge and appreci - ation of Norwegian culture and history in the United States, especially in the Upper Midwest, through involvement, leadership, and professional genealogical research with the Norwegian American Genealogical Center & Naeseth Library.” This fitting commendation recognizes the lasting contributions that Blaine has made, most recently in his continuing role as Naeseth Chair for Research and Publication. 2010 also witnessed several milestone accomplishments for our organization. Our endowments continued to grow. Our mem - berships also grew; income from membership now provides a healthy 24 percent of our annual operating budget. During the four years of our independent existence, our membership participation in the annual fund has also grown from a solid ten per - cent to an enviable sixteen percent response rate. Tribute gifts have nearly tripled, and memorials have doubled. We are pleased and honored to include the recognition and thanks for these memorials and tributes for 2010 in this report. All our members agree that their memorial and tribute gifts are highly appropriate ways to support an institution that discovers, shares, and pre - serves family histories and heritage. -

BRUNHILDS CINEMATIC EVOLUTION IN GERMAN FILM by ULLA KASPRZYK HELD (Under the Direction of Christine Haase) ABSTRACT This thesis investigates the portrayal of Brunhild in three major films that retell the Norse and Germanic variations of the legends of Brunhild and Siegfried: Fritz Lang’s Die Nibelungen (1924), Harald Reinl’s Die Nibelungen (1966), and Uli Edel’s Die Nibelungen – Der Fluch des Drachen (2004) (English title Dark Kingdom: The Dragon King, 2006). The emphasis will be on whether Brunhild is portrayed in keeping with the spirit of the Norse tradition, i.e. that of a strong woman with agency, by examining the decade the film was shot in, to include gender relations, the director and production team, the literary and other sources used for the film, and finally the plot of the film itself, coupled with the portrayal of the character by the respective actress. I will argue the portrayal of this epic figure does not correspond to the most successful and emancipated representation of Brunhild in the Norse tradition in Lang’s and Reinl’s films, whereas it does in Edel’s film. An overview of the legend and sagas that have served as sources for these films will be required in order to support my analyses. A connection between the making of these films and the directors’ choice of which literary Brunhild to portray will also be examined. The Fall of Arthur and The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrún: A Metrical Review of Three Modern English Alliterative Poems Nelson Goering ABSTRACT J.R.R. Tolkien produced a considerable body of poetry in which he used the traditional alliterative metre of Old Norse and Old English to write modern English verse. This paper reviews three of his longer narrative poems, published in The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrún and The Fall of Arthur, examining Tolkien's alliterative technique in comparison to medieval poetry and to the metrical theories of Eduard Sievers. In particular, the two poems in The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrún, which are adapted from Old Norse material, show a number of metrical and poetic features reminiscent of Tolkien's sources in the Poetic Edda. The Fall of Arthur, on the other hand, is in a style that is, in detail and in general, strongly reminiscent of Old English poetry. Throughout all these compositions, Tolkien employs a distinctive alliterative style, closely based on medieval and philological models, but adjusted according to the linguistic needs of modern English and to his own preferences. The past five years have seen the publication of two significant works of long narrative poetry by J.R.R Tolkien, The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrún appearing in 2009, followed by The Fall of Arthur in 2013.1 There 1 My thanks go to Tom Shippey for his helpful comments on a draft of this review. 4 Journal of Inklings Studies are three major poems in these books (The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrún contains both the ‘New Lay of the Volsungs̈ ’ and the ‘New Lay of Gudrún’ as related but distinct works), all of which are written in a distinctive and nowadays unusual metre: a revival and adaptation of medieval Germanic alliterative verse. -

My expectations were very neutral before reading. Hartman has recently suggested that the late Old English poem The Battle of Brunanburh may have used ponderous verse— types in much the same way , It is not so jumpy that it puts off an informed reader. His use of this device is much like in the Fall of Arthur, though in this poem he uses it slightly less frequently, 26 and crossed alliteration is somewhat rarer in general. Neckel, Gustav, ed. Grimhild advises her daughter to mourn no longer, commenting that Brynhild is dead and that Gudrun is still beautiful. Which I don't have, since my education lacked things like the "Nibelungenlied", which is apparently similar. Some of the differences and similarities between Gudrun and Kriemhild in the Scandinavian and continental Germanic traditions can be seen in the following two stanzas taken from original sources. It should not be forgotten that Tolkien was an Oxford don more than he was a professional writer, and this translation of a long, turgid Norse saga is a scholarly work, that if it didn't have JRRT's name on the cover would probably only be read by a few intellectuals. Some of the biggest books out this fall promise to be epics full of magic, adventure, However, type E was nowhere near so rare for Tolkien as for the Anglo— Saxons, and even if he were not freer with anacrusis more generally, it would not be surprising that he would feel more comfortable using it with this rhythmic pattern. -

As obras A Canção dos Nibelungos e A Saga dos Völsung foram escritas na região que hoje corresponde à Áustria, no século XII, e na Islândia, no século XIII, respectivamente. São obras apresentam as mesmas personagens, assim como uma narrativa semelhante, mas tem um tratamento diferenciado dessas personagens, e a narrativa se desenvolve de maneira notoriamente díspare na segunda parte das obras. Esta dissertação tem como objetivo analisar o papel das personagens femininas, as quais são de vital importância para o desenvolvimento das vinganças que constituem o tema principal dessas histórias.
