Late Carboniferous bryozoans from La Hermida, Spain Andrej Ernst and Elke Minwegen Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 51 (3), 2006: 569-588 Fifteen bryozoan species belonging to thirteen genera have been identified from an outcrop of the Picos de Europa Formation (Moscovian, Upper Carboniferous) at La Hermida in northern Spain. Three species and one genus are new Coscinium hermidensis sp. nov., Cystodictya pustulosa sp. nov., and Cystocladia hispanica gen. et sp. nov. Rhabdomesid bryozoans are the most diverse order with seven species, followed by cystoporids (four species), fenestellids (three species) and trepostomids (one species). Bryozoans with erect branched or reticulate colonies dominate in the studied assemblage; only two species possess encrusting colonies. Together with associated crinoids, the bryozoan assemblage indicates a subtidal environment below the zone of vigorous water movement. The La Hermida bryozoan fauna confirms the Upper Carboniferous age of the Picos de Europa Formation and allows various biogeographical interpretations. All previously known species of the genus Coscinium were reported from the Lower Permian of Russia. Clausotrypa monticola is known from the Lower Permian of Russia and Arctic as well as from the Upper Carboniferous of Carnic Alps (Austria). Rhabdomeson cf. propatulissimum and Penniretepora pseudotrilineata are known from the same level of Italian Carnic Alps. Streblotrypa (Streblascopora ) nikiforovae and Rhombocladia punctata are known from the Upper Carboniferous (Moscovian) of Ukraine. Fistulipora petaloida is known from Kasimovian Stage of Russian Plate. Several other species show connections with North America. BASSLER (With 3 Plates) One of the most important accessions in the division of strati- graphic paleontology during the year 1907 was the collection of the late Henry Nettelroth, acquired jointly by the Smithsonian Institu- tion and the U. S. National Museum from his sons, H. H. Nettel- roth and Dr. Alexander Nettelroth, of Louisville, Kentucky. The registration and installation of these specimens was recently com- pleted, and it seemed in order, as well as very desirable on account of Mr. Nettelroth's work in science and of the valuable nature of his collection, to publish an article upon the subject. The collection is composed entirely of invertebrate fossils, mainly from the Silurian and Devonian strata of Indiana and Kentucky, although many other American as well as foreign localities are represented. The total number of specimens is rather small compared with the number of species represented, the collection comprising about 8,000 specimens, registered under nearly 1,000 entries; but all of the material is the best that could be had. Mr. Nettelroth prided himself upon the fact that his cabinet contained only choice specimens, representing years of careful selection. Imperfect material was retained only when it showed something of scientific interest. In exchanging. Air. Nettelroth also insisted upon a few good specimens rather than numerous poor representatives of a species. Likewise he paid par- ticular attention to a class of fossils, the mollusca, which is seldom well represented in the cabinets of even the best collectors. -
Paleobiogeographic Associations Among Mississippian Bryozoans
PALEOBIOGEOGRAPHIC ASSOCIATIONS AMONG MISSISSIPPIAN BRYOZOANS BY Ryan FitzGerald Morgan A THESIS Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE Geological Sciences 2010 i ABSTRACT PALEOBIOGEOGRAPHIC ASSOCIATIONS AMONG MISSISSIPPIAN BRYOZOANS BY Ryan FitzGerald Morgan Area cladograms produced by parsimony analysis of endemicity coupled with seriation, paired group cluster, principal coordinates, and detrended correspondence analyses demonstrate endemic associations of Mississippian-age bryozoans. These methods identified three major biogeographic associations (North America I, North America II, and Old World Realms), and nine minor associations (Waverly, Keokuk, Warsaw, Burlington, St. Louis, Chester, Tethys I, Tethys II, Russia, Kazakhstan-Siberia Provinces). These associations, along with latitudinal diversity gradients, provide support for an early closure of the tropical seaway (Rheic Ocean) that existed between Laurussia and Gondwana, along with support for faunal shifts due to the onset of Gondwanan glaciation and the restriction of North American faunas from the more eastern Tethyan faunas. ii DEDICATION This thesis is dedicated to my mother, Christena Morgan, in recognition of her encouragement, support, and gift of an inquisitive mind. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to first acknowledge Dr Robert L Anstey, both for all the help and guidance he has supplied over the course of my education and this thesis, and also for providing the push to engage in this field of study. A monograph of Yorkshire Carboniferous Polyzoa, will be, speaking generally, a monograph of nearly the whole of British species. There are a few forms found elsewhere, which, up to date, I have not detected in my Yorkshire material, but when we consider that only a few samples of our Yorkshire shales have been, as yet, persistently searched for the more minute fossils, we need not be surprised at that. Ordinary fossil collectors in the Limestone districts have secured many examples of Fenestella and Polypora, but the great mass of Carboniferous Polyzoa are small, and apparently insig• nificant, hence it is only those who study microscopic organisms who are brought into contact with the fragments found in shale washings. If the whole of the species, however, are not found in the York• shire Limestones and Shales, the genera are, and to a large extent the fades of the Yorkshire species are peculiar, and there oy merit special recognition. Certainly on this head, I have done justice to Yorkshire examples in the pages of this Journal, but my previous work can only be regarded as a catalogue of the species, and not a monograph. In this higher sense a true monograph should embrace all previous work, and the description of the forms should be full and complete up to date, and the illustrations, superficial and structural, should also be ample. So far as I am aware no attempt has yet been made to give to the scientific world a monograph of British Carbon• iferous forms, and it is only just recently that monographs of American Carboniferous Polyzoa are being brought to the front by the Palaeon• tologists of the various Geological Surveys. -

Ulvang Mastergradsoppgave i nordisk språkvitenskap Fakultet for humaniora, samfunnsvitenskap og lærerutdanning Institutt for språkvitenskap Universitetet i Tromsø Høsten 2012 Forord I mitt tidligere liv tilbragte jeg to år som radiotelegrafist (1964-66) og ett år som stasjonssjef (1975-76) ved Isfjord Radio1 på Kapp Linné. Dette er nok bakgrunnen for at jeg valgte å skrive en masteroppgave om stedsnavn på Svalbard. Seks delemner har utgjort halve mastergradsstudiet, og noen av disse førte meg tilbake til arktiske strøk. En semesteroppgave omhandlet Norske skipsnavn2, der noen av navna var av polarskuter. En annen omhandlet Språkmøte på Svalbard3, en sosiolingvistisk studie fra Longyearbyen. Den førte meg tilbake til øygruppen, om ikke fysisk så i hvert fall mentalt. Det samme har denne masteroppgaven gjort. Jeg har også vært student ved Universitetet i Tromsø tidligere. Jeg tok min cand. philol.-grad ved Institutt for historie høsten 2000 med hovedfagsoppgaven Telekommunikasjoner på Spitsbergen 1911-1935. Jeg vil takke veilederen min, professor Gulbrand Alhaug for den flotte oppfølgingen gjennom hele prosessen med denne masteroppgaven om stedsnavn på Svalbard. Han var også min foreleser og veileder da jeg tok mellomfagstillegget i nordisk språk med oppgaven Frå Amarius til Pardis. Manns- og kvinnenavn i Alstahaug og Stamnes 1850-1900.4 Jeg takker også alle andre som på en eller annen måte har hjulpet meg i denne prosessen. Dette gjelder bl.a.
