BOYS’ LOVE AND FEMALE FRIENDSHIPS: THE SUBCULTURE OF YAOI AS A SOCIAL BOND BETWEEN WOMEN by AMY ANN O’BRIEN Under the Direction of Jennifer Patico ABSTRACT In this thesis I argue that the yaoi community addresses a gap in subculture studies through the ways in which women use the genre to socialize. Yaoi is a genre of Japanese animation and comics which focuses on romantic relationships between two men and is directly geared towards women. Through ethnographic research in the United States, I look at how the women I interviewed conceptualize their participation within the community and what yaoi means to them. The women within the yaoi community are not rebelliously opposing the mainstream as many subcultural theories suggest, but are instead carving out a social space for themselves and others who have a distinct taste for the yaoi genre. Yaoi is a genre of Japanese animation (anime) and comics (manga) which focuses on romantic relationships between two men and may include sexually explicit content. Although I have only met Cameron once prior to this afternoon and I just met Sarah today, both women are friendly and engaging. In fact, despite the occasional question or topic that I bring up, the “interview” feels less like a structured event and more of a conversation between friends. I am continually surprised and touched at how willing yaoi fans are to talk with me about their experiences with yaoi. I found easy friendship and a welcoming camaraderie a common theme throughout my fieldwork in the yaoi community. During our conversation, Sarah jokingly comments, as some people sit down a few tables away, that we will most likely frighten them off. The comment is made laughingly as it is not our intention to frighten anyone away, but upon hearing our unusual conversation it is understandable why some people may be inclined to leave. As I began to delve into the reasons why women participate in the yaoi community, I was continually struck by the sociality involved be it through anime conventions, the internet, or spending an afternoon talking about yaoi with a few other people. How do the women involved describe their experiences as a member of the yaoi community? What motivations are cited for their continued membership? How do yaoi fans situate themselves in regards to the mainstream culture? How is the consumption and appropriation of yaoi used by fans? Lastly, in what ways do women use the yaoi genre as a way to forge and maintain social bonds? With the growing influence of Japan's cultural capital on the global stage, American youth are increasingly drawn to Japanese products (Allison 2006). The study of yaoi provides an 2 interesting intersection of contemporary youth culture. While the internet and online communities are increasingly visible, such as MySpace.com, the yaoi community exists both online through message boards and discussion groups and offline through conventions devoted to Japanese animation. These conventions act as a site of community building and material consumption. Online communities link the geographically dispersed yaoi fans and the conventions are then able to provide a tangible community. Additionally, yaoi is predominantly a woman's genre, which adds another layer of paradoxical behavior to the equation. The yaoi genre involves the blurring of gender lines since the men in yaoi titles are often visually sexually ambiguous and, in personality, the traditional gender roles of male and female are often transposed onto the two male characters.

DAHLBERG-DODD The Ohio State University, USA ABSTRACT Building on recent work supporting a sociolinguistic approach to orthograph- ic choice, this study engages with paratextual language use in yuri, a subgenre of Japanese shōjo manga ‘girls’ comics’ that centers on same-sex romantic and/or erotic relationships between female characters. The comic magazine Comic Yuri Hime has been the dominant, if not only, yuri-oriented published magazine in Japan since its inception in 2005. Though both written and consumed by a primarily female audience, the magazine has undergone nu- merous attempts to rebrand and refocus the target audience as a means to broaden the magazine’s readership. This change in target demographic is reflected in the stylistic representation of paratextual occurrences of the second-person pronoun anata, indicating the role of the textual landscape in reflecting, and reifying, an imagined target audience.     The origins of the magical girl genre Note: this first chapter is an almost verbatim copy of the excellent introduction from the BESM: Sailor Moon Role-Playing Game and Resource Book by Mark C. MacKinnon et al. I took the liberty of changing a few names according to official translations and contemporary transliterations. It focuses on the traditional magical girls “for girls”, and ignores very very early works like Go Nagai's Cutie Honey, which essentially created a market more oriented towards the male audience; we shall deal with such things in the next chapter. Once upon a time, an American live-action sitcom called Bewitched, came to the Land of the Rising Sun... The magical girl genre has a rather long and important history in Japan. The magical girls of manga and Japanese animation (or anime) are a rather unique group of characters. They defy easy classification, and yet contain elements from many of the best loved fairy tales and children's stories throughout the world. Many countries have imported these stories for their children to enjoy (most notably France, Italy and Spain) but the traditional format of this particular genre of manga and anime still remains mostly unknown to much of the English-speaking world. The very first magical girl seen on television was created about fifty years ago. Mahoutsukai Sally (or “Sally the Witch”) began airing on Japanese television in 1966, in black and white. The first season of the show proved to be so popular that it was renewed for a second year, moving into the era of color television in 1967.

In the United States this growth has been based on copyright infringement, where fans have subtitled anime series and released them as fansubs. In the absence of official releases fansubs have created the current popularity of anime, which companies can now benefit from. From the beginning the companies have tolerated and even encouraged the fan activity, partly because the fans have followed their own rules, intended to stop the distribution of fansubs after official licensing. The work explores the history and current situation of fansubs, and seeks to explain how these practices adopted by fans have arisen, why both fans and companies accept them and act according to them, and whether the situation is sustainable. The three protagonists, including two Russian skaters Victor Nikiforov, and Yuri Purisetsuki (Юрий Плисецкий), and one Japanese skater Yuri Katsuki (勝生勇利), engage in extensive cross-cultural discourses. This paper aims to explore the ways in which Russian cultures, life style, and people are ‘glocalised’ in the anime, not only for the Japanese audience but also for fans around the world. It is followed by a brief study of Russian fans’ response to YOI’s display of Russian memes and Taiwanese YOI fan books relating to Russia and Russians in YOI. My reading of the above materials suggests that the imagined Russian identity in both the official anime production and the fan works can be regarded as an intriguing case of cross-cultural communication and cultural hybridisation.     Gender and the family in contemporary Chinese-language film remakes Sarah Woodland BBusMan., BA (Hons) A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2016 School of Languages and Cultures 1 Abstract This thesis argues that cinematic remakes in the Chinese cultural context are a far more complex phenomenon than adaptive translation between disparate cultures. While early work conducted on French cinema and recent work on Chinese-language remakes by scholars including Li, Chan and Wang focused primarily on issues of intercultural difference, this thesis looks not only at remaking across cultures, but also at intracultural remakes. In doing so, it moves beyond questions of cultural politics, taking full advantage of the unique opportunity provided by remakes to compare and contrast two versions of the same narrative, and investigates more broadly at the many reasons why changes between a source film and remake might occur. Using gender as a lens through which these changes can be observed, this thesis conducts a comparative analysis of two pairs of intercultural and two pairs of intracultural films, each chapter highlighting a different dimension of remakes, and illustrating how changes in gender representations can be reflective not just of differences in attitudes towards gender across cultures, but also of broader concerns relating to culture, genre, auteurism, politics and temporality. The thesis endeavours to investigate the complexities of remaking processes in a Chinese-language cinematic context, with a view to exploring the ways in which remakes might reflect different perspectives on Chinese society more broadly, through their ability to compel the viewer to reflect not only on the past, by virtue of the relationship with a source text, but also on the present, through the way in which the remake reshapes this text to address its audience.

Anime is known by many to be a more mature option for animation fans since Western animation has typically been sanitized to be “kid-friendly.” This thesis explores how this came to be, by exploring the following questions: (1) What were the differences in the development and perception of the animation industries in Japan and the United States? (2) Why/how did people in the United States take such interest in anime? (3) What is the role of anime conventions within the anime fandom community, both historically and in the present? These questions were answered with a mix of historical research, mapping, and interviews that were conducted in 2015 at Anime Expo, North America’s largest anime convention. This thesis concludes that anime would not have succeeded as it has in the United States without the heavy involvement of domestic animation fans. Fans created networks, clubs, and conventions that allowed for the exchange of information on anime, before Japanese companies started to officially release anime titles for distribution in the United States.
