Its popularity reveals the universal Cinderella Complex hidden behind the woman status. My thesis focuses its attention on the transition in woman status. First, it looks into the Cinderella paradigm as well as its complex in reality. Second, it finds the transcendence in modern Cinderella. The last part pursues the development of women status’ improvement. In current study, seldom people make comparisons between Cinderella and Ugly Betty. With its comparison and the exploration of feminism, it can be reached that woman status have been greatly improved under the influence of different factors like economic and political. And as a modern woman lives in the new century, she has to be independent in economy and optimistic in spirit. 1 “Everybody Loves a Muscle Boi”: Homos, Heroes, and Foes in Post-9/11 Spoofs of the 300 Spartans Ralph J. Poole “It’s Greek to whom?” In 2007-2008, a significant accumulation of cinematic and other visual media took up a celebrated episode of Greek antiquity recounting in different genres and styles the rise of the Spartans against the Persians. Amongst them are the documentary The Last Stand of the 300 (2007, David Padrusch), the film 300 (2007, Zack Snyder), the video game 300: March to Glory (2007, Collision Studios), the short film United 300 (2007, Andy Signore), and the comedy Meet the Spartans (2008, Jason Friedberg/Aaron Seltzer). Why is the legend of the 300 Spartans so attractive for contemporary American cinema? A possible, if surprising account for the interest in this ancient theme stems from an economic perspective. Written at the dawn of the worldwide financial crisis, the fight of the 300 Spartans has served as point of reference for the serious loss of confidence in the banking system, but also in national politics in general. William Streeter of the ABA Banking Journal succinctly wonders about what robs bankers’ precious resting hours: What a fragile thing confidence is. Events of the past six months have seen it coalesce and evaporate several times. […] This is what keeps central bankers awake at night. But then that is their primary reason for being, because the workings of economies and, indeed, governments, hinge upon trust and confidence. […] With any group, whether it be 300 Spartans holding off a million Persians at Thermopylae or a group of central bankers trying to keep a global financial community from bolting, trust is a matter of individual decisions.

Introduction “Faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. Look! Up in the sky! It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s Superman! “ (Daniels, 1998, p. 1-7). Some people might not recognize the reference to early radio shows and cartoons, but most people will recognize the name Superman. Superman has become such an amazing cultural icon, that almost everyone knows his name, and often his weakness, his powers, the colors of his suit and the name of his arch nemesis. It’s part of common knowledge and everyone has been exposed to him at some time or another. Since the creation of Superman in 1938, comic book research and literary studies have come along way. These allows us to more deeply analyze and understand, as well as unravel the deeper signified meanings associated with the iconic Superman (Wandtke, 2007, p. 25). He is seen as a superhero, but also upholds “truth, justice and the American way” (Watt-Evans, 2006, p. 1). Some see him as Christ-like or Jewish, and even as a fascist. He fulfills some of our needs from the Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, and also expresses different messages depending on the medium in which he is portrayed. There is no end to the Superman merchandise, but Superman as an icon, can change a person.

Re-Examining Discourses of Muslim Terrorism in Hollywood Beyond
Reid • 95 Te Age of Sympathy: Re-examining discourses of Muslim terrorism in Hollywood beyond the ‘pre-’ and ‘post-9/11’ dichotomy Jay Reid – University of Adelaide [email protected] Te events of September 11 did not herald a new age of terrorism, for terrorism had been primarily fuelled by religion since the 1980s; however, the 9/11 attacks did herald changes in the representation of terrorism in Hollywood cinema, with an increased frequency of Muslim antagonists, more sinister and deadly than their pre-9/11 compatriots. While pre- and post-9/11 images have been investigated in previous studies, the continued evolution of Middle Eastern characters in the decade since the attacks has rarely been discussed. Tis paper examines six Hollywood action flms released between 1991 and 2011 (a decade prior to and after the attacks) through an Orientalism critique, investigating how representations of Muslim terrorists in Western popular culture have evolved. Te fndings support earlier research on a discursive shift immediately post-9/11, but also reveal a second shift in representation, occurring approximately half a decade after the attacks. Cinematic representations immediately after the attacks positioned Muslim terrorists as sympathetic individuals seduced to commit acts of terrorism by religious fundamentalism. However, from 2007 onwards, representations again change, framing onscreen Muslim terrorists as willing participants in violent activities motivated by Islamic fundamentalism, with an absence of the earlier sympathetic positioning. Tis research builds on existing studies into cinematic representations of terrorism and extends our knowledge of the cinematic discourses of the Hollywood Muslim terrorist, a subject to which continued media and public attention is directed.

“Why So Serious?” Comics, Film and Politics, Or the Comic Book Film As the Answer to the Question of Identity and Narrative in a Post-9/11 World
ABSTRACT “WHY SO SERIOUS?” COMICS, FILM AND POLITICS, OR THE COMIC BOOK FILM AS THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION OF IDENTITY AND NARRATIVE IN A POST-9/11 WORLD by Kyle Andrew Moody This thesis analyzes a trend in a subgenre of motion pictures that are designed to not only entertain, but also provide a message for the modern world after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The analysis provides a critical look at three different films as artifacts of post-9/11 culture, showing how the integration of certain elements made them allegorical works regarding the status of the United States in the aftermath of the attacks. Jean Baudrillard‟s postmodern theory of simulation and simulacra was utilized to provide a context for the films that tap into themes reflecting post-9/11 reality.
