Alison Cunningham Director of Research & Planning Linda Baker Executive Director -vii- “WHAT ABOUT ME” Seeking to Understand a Child’s View of Violence in the Family Two-year-old Ameer is crying as his father orders him to hit his pregnant mother in the stomach. She squirms to avoid the toddler’s feeble blows but eventually shoves him away. She is crying too and his father is yelling, angry that his mother called 911 last night during a violent argument. When the police arrived, his mother minimized the situation and no charges were laid. Ameer does not understand this, but his father is promising to call the Children’s Aid Society if his mother calls the police again, to tell them she hit Ameer. They will take her children, both Ameer and his nine-month-old brother, he threatens. His father works long hours in the family business and often comes home drunk. His mother speaks little English, is a landed immigrant because of her husband’s sponsorship, and has no family in Canada. Her husband’s family visits periodically to make sure she is home. She has no social supports, no access to a car, and the growing family lives in a tiny two-bedroom apartment. Six months later, neighbours call the police during a loud argument and, despite his mother’s pleas, Ameer’s father is arrested as Ameer watches. In the months that pass as the case slowly winds it way through the court system, Ameer is sad and confused about why his father doesn’t come home. Four-year-old Brenda is watching television with the volume turned up, trying to ignore the loud argument between her parents in the kitchen. Suddenly, her mother walks into the den and tells Brenda they are going to spend the night with Grandma. Her father protests and pushes his wife down onto the couch next to Brenda. “I told you that if you ever did that again you are outta here,” his mother yells defiantly. As she pretends to call 911, Brenda’s father storms out and drives away. Her parents divorce and Brenda moves with her mother to a smaller house in a different area. Her father is supposed to visit every second weekend but often doesn’t show up. For six months, he doesn’t come at all because of a prison sentence for impaired driving. Twelve-year-old Charity has fallen asleep in school again. Her teacher sends her to the principal who asks if anything is wrong at home. Charity weighs her options. Sometimes she imagines living in another family. Her father is strict and all five children must follow the rules or they are punished.

Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

But, somehow, the requisite feelings of being TTold guys talking about how things were more vital back jaded are eluding me. In fact, I’m downright optimistic. in the day.     BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: Tetsui Watanabe Tetsui Watanabe, the second of three children, was born in 1914 to Shichiro and Tei Watanabe in Urausu-mura, Kabato-gun, Hokkaido, Japan, where Shichiro began his teaching career. When his father accepted a position at a Japanese-language school in Laupähoehoe, Hawai‘i, Tetsui Watanabe and mother joined him in the islands in 1918. Within a year or two, when another teaching position became available, the family moved from Laupähoehoe to Kaiwiki, Hawai‘i where brother, Saburo, was born. In 1921, the family moved to Waikïkï on the island of O‘ahu where the Watanabes—Shichiro as Japanese-language school teacher-principal and Tei as teacher—served the community. Tetsui Watanabe grew up in Waikïkï. He attended Waikïkï Elementary, Washington Intermediate, and McKinley High Schools. He also attended Waikïkï Japanese-language School. Following high school graduation in 1931, he enrolled at the University of Hawai‘i and later, the University of Chicago where he received a bachelor’s degree. He received his medical degree from Rush Medical College in 1938. After completing his residency in Chicago, he returned to Honolulu in 1941. With no openings in radiology, he soon sought and accepted a position in Los Angeles. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, Tetsui Watanabe was turned away when he tried to enlist in the U.S. military. Like other Japanese Americans on the West Coast, he was sent to an assembly center—Tulare, which he helped set up. Later, he was sent to Tule Lake War Relocation Center. At both camps, he worked in the medical facilities.

Introduction “Faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. Look! Up in the sky! It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s Superman! “ (Daniels, 1998, p. 1-7). Some people might not recognize the reference to early radio shows and cartoons, but most people will recognize the name Superman. Superman has become such an amazing cultural icon, that almost everyone knows his name, and often his weakness, his powers, the colors of his suit and the name of his arch nemesis. It’s part of common knowledge and everyone has been exposed to him at some time or another. Since the creation of Superman in 1938, comic book research and literary studies have come along way. These allows us to more deeply analyze and understand, as well as unravel the deeper signified meanings associated with the iconic Superman (Wandtke, 2007, p. 25). He is seen as a superhero, but also upholds “truth, justice and the American way” (Watt-Evans, 2006, p. 1). Some see him as Christ-like or Jewish, and even as a fascist. He fulfills some of our needs from the Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, and also expresses different messages depending on the medium in which he is portrayed. There is no end to the Superman merchandise, but Superman as an icon, can change a person.

    ABSTRACT “WHY SO SERIOUS?” COMICS, FILM AND POLITICS, OR THE COMIC BOOK FILM AS THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION OF IDENTITY AND NARRATIVE IN A POST-9/11 WORLD by Kyle Andrew Moody This thesis analyzes a trend in a subgenre of motion pictures that are designed to not only entertain, but also provide a message for the modern world after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The analysis provides a critical look at three different films as artifacts of post-9/11 culture, showing how the integration of certain elements made them allegorical works regarding the status of the United States in the aftermath of the attacks. Jean Baudrillard‟s postmodern theory of simulation and simulacra was utilized to provide a context for the films that tap into themes reflecting post-9/11 reality.
