JR., A Musical Based on “The Ugly Duckling.” Unpublished Master of Arts thesis, University of Northern Colorado, 2013. Benjamin Franklin Theatre Project was created in response to recent violence in schools and new anti-bullying legislation. Schools in Washington State are mandated by legislation to adopt anti-bullying policies. After a policy was made official, it was up to schools, particularly educators to guide students to understand, support and integrate the anti-bullying message into the school community. Theatre education, a constructivist, holistic approach to learning, was a successful way to do this at Benjamin Franklin Elementary School. By producing HONK! Jr. a musical play based on Hans Christian Andersen’s story “The Ugly Duckling”, students were able to explore, role-play and recreate a true account of bullying. Andersen’s “The Ugly Duckling”, is based on his life and the bullying he endured as a child. All students deserve a peaceful, safe, positive environment at school. Using theatre education as a bridge for integrated thematic learning provided a safe and pretend environment for students to gain empathy and ultimately understand the dangers of bullying. Producing a musical play was a way to build self-esteem, promote acceptance, and to build strong community bonds. Requiring parent participation and allowing all interested students to join were two key factors that naturally helped detour bullying behavior. First, it looks into the Cinderella paradigm as well as its complex in reality. Second, it finds the transcendence in modern Cinderella. The last part pursues the development of women status’ improvement. In current study, seldom people make comparisons between Cinderella and Ugly Betty. The Ugly Duckling: Considered the most autobiographical of all his tales, Andersen first published "The Ugly Duckling" in 1844 when he was 39 years old. He admitted on many occasions that the tale mirrored his own life. The tale appeared in Nye Eventyr (New Fairy Tales). The collection was critically well-received. HAH The Franks write: It is not only among his most famous stories — the title itself has become part of several languages — but the one that readers correctly identify most closely with its author. Andersen spent his summers with aristocratic friends, going from one castle to the next; in the summer of 1842, at Gisselfeldt Castle, south of Copenhagen, he had been in a bad mood because a new play had done poorly. But he went for a walk, a diary entry notes, and “got the idea for a story about a duck. Improved my mood.” In late July — he was now a guest at the castle of Bregentved — he says, “Began the young swan yesterday” — a hint that the idea had not quite worked itself out (156).

Helen Warner P a g e | 2 ABSTRACT According to the head of the American Costume Designers‟ Guild, Deborah Nadoolman Landis, fashion is emphatically „not costume‟. However, if this is the case, how do we approach costume in a television show like Sex and the City (1998-2004), which we know (via press articles and various other extra-textual materials) to be comprised of designer clothes? Once onscreen, are the clothes in Sex and the City to be interpreted as „costume‟, rather than „fashion‟? To be sure, it is important to tease out precise definitions of key terms, but to position fashion as the antithesis of costume is reductive. Landis‟ claim is based on the assumption that the purpose of costume is to tell a story. She thereby neglects to acknowledge that the audience may read certain costumes as fashion - which exists in a framework of discourses that can be located beyond the text. This is particularly relevant with regard to contemporary US television which, according to press reports, has witnessed an emergence of „fashion programming‟ - fictional programming with a narrative focus on fashion.
