    the cinematic flâneur manifestations of modernity in the male protagonist of 1940s film noir Petra Désirée Nolan Submitted in Total Fulfilment of the Requirements of the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy April 2004 The School of Art History, Cinema, Classics and Archaeology The University of Melbourne Abstract The hardboiled hero is recognised as a central trope in the film noir cycle, and particularly in the ‘classic’ noir texts produced in Hollywood in the 1940s. Like the films themselves, this protagonist has largely been understood as an allegorical embodiment of a bleak post-World War Two mood of anxiety and disillusionment. Theorists have consistently attributed his pessimism, alienation, paranoia and fatalism to the concurrent American cultural climate. With its themes of murder, illicit desire, betrayal, obsession and moral dissolution, the noir canon also proves conducive to psychoanalytic interpretation. By oedipalising the noir hero and the cinematic text in which he is embedded, this approach at best has produced exemplary noir criticism, but at worst a tendency to universalise his trajectory. This thesis proposes a complementary and newly historicised critical paradigm with which to interpret the noir hero. Such an exegesis encompasses a number of social, aesthetic, demographic and political forces reaching back to the nineteenth century. This will reveal the centrality of modernity in shaping the noir hero’s ontology. The noir hero will also be connected to the flâneur, a figure who embodied the changes of modernity and who emerged in the mid-nineteenth century as both an historical entity and a critical metaphor for the new subject. As a rehistoricised approach will reveal, this nineteenth century—or classic—flâneur provides a potent template for the noir hero.

Robert J Read, 2010. ii Abstract Film scholarship has generally assumed that the low-budget independent film studios, commonly known as Poverty Row, originated in the early sound-era to take advantage of the growing popularity of double feature exhibition programs. However, the emergence of the independent Poverty Row studios of the 1930s was actually the result of a complex interplay between the emerging Hollywood studios and independent film production during the late 1910s and 1920s. As the Hollywood studios expanded their production, as well as their distribution networks and exhibition circuits, the independent producers that remained outside of the studio system became increasingly marginalized and cut-off from the most profitable aspects of film exhibition. By the late 1920s, non-Hollywood independent film production became reduced to the making of low-budget action films (westerns, adventure films and serials) for the small profit, suburban neighbourhood and small town markets. With the economic hardships of the Depression, the dominant Hollywood studios were forced to cut-back on their lower budgeted films, thus inadvertently allowing the independent production companies now referred to in the trade press as Poverty Row to expand their film practice.

    1 The Theory and Practice of Film Adaptation Before analyzing the reasons for Madame Bovary’s popularity with film directors and dealing with the practice of adaptation as it applies to this novel, I would like to make some general comments about film adaptation and the theory driving the field that has come to be known as “adaptation studies.” No hard and fast rules govern the way in which novels are made into films, and this is perhaps as it should be. As Delphine Jayot has noted, novels escape their authors’ control as soon as they are published and read, and indeed, their very survival depends upon their being read and reread, interpreted and re-interpreted (Jayot, 3). Film adaptations are part of this process. Short of the need to require rights to adapt a work that is still under copyright (which is not the case with Madame Bovary), there are no legalities at all involved in the process of screening novels (Brady 4). It follows that there are many different modes of adaptation, and the relationship between literary text and film is anything but stable. The film credits often offer a clue as to this relationship. Films that are merely “inspired by” or “suggested by” novels often invent their own titles, and their overlap with the source text may be minimal.     3 Minnelli (1949): Hollywood Rediscovers Emma It was in Hollywood, California, during an era that was characterized, not by an economic depression and an attendant pessimism but by an ebullient, post-war optimism, that Vincente Minnelli decided to try his hand at adapting Flaubert’s “scandalous” novel of 1857. Like Renoir, Minnelli accepted without hesitation when a producer (in this case Pandro Berman) phoned to ask him if he’d be interested in the project. Having experienced a year of inactivity that coincided with a fallow period for MGM, as Hollywood Studios struggled to find their niche in a country that had just been introduced to the marvels of television, Minnelli was eager to get back to work, and he knew Flaubert’s novel and liked it (Minnelli 201). He was not the first director to bring Emma to Tinseltown. That distinction, as we have seen, went to Albert Ray who, in 1932, had made Unholy Love, a film based loosely on the novel. Nor was Minnelli the first filmmaker after Renoir to adapt the novel to the screen. In the fifteen years that separate Renoir’s version from Minnelli’s, two other adaptations were released: the first, in 1937, was a German production directed by Gerhard Lamprecht and starring an actress of silent screen fame, Pola Negri; the second, just ten years later, was an Argentine version directed by Carlos Schlieper. However, there is one distinction that belongs to Minnelli alone, that of having brought Madame Bovary—or rather, a sanitized version thereof—to the American film-going public in a major Hollywood production that won critical acclaim and achieved a box-office 70 Madame Bovary at the Movies success.1 Nominated for an Academy Award for best set decoration, Minnelli’s adaptation has not however been spared sharp criticism from film scholars familiar with the novel and from literary critics, who decry the considerable liberties the director took with Flaubert’s masterpiece.

Il caso esemplare preso in considerazione è quello del capolavoro flaubertiano Madame Bovary . Il caso di studio è stato scelto in relazione alla particolare natura dello stile flaubertiano, oltre che evidentemente alla ricchezza di occorrenze, di diverso stile e livello, di adattamenti che la storia del cinema di ogni tempo e luogo offre. La prosa flaubertiana, infatti, com’è stato ormai ampiamente riconosciuto dalla critica, è dotata di un peculiare carattere “visuale”, che la rende una candidata ideale all’adattamento cinematografico. Inoltre, il carattere universale e, per così dire, la porosità della protagonista del romanzo, Emma Bovary, fanno sì che l’eroina flaubertiana abbia assunto nel tempo i tratti di una vera e propria “icona culturale”. Ciò la rende evidentemente attraente per la narrazione cinematografica, capace di farne emergere ed esaltarne tratti già presenti nel romanzo ma ulteriormente elaborabili. A partire da questo caso di studio è possibile compiere una ricognizione trasversale, sebbene non ultimativa data la ricchezza del materiale, non solo dei rapporti tra cinema e letteratura rispetto al romanzo di Flaubert, ma anche, più in generale, dello statuto dell’adattamento, considerato qui come momento qualificante di un’operazione di transcondificazione e di rimediazione del medium letterario in altri media (nello specifico il linguaggio cinematografico).

    20 x Madame Bovary Flaubert's roman Madame Bovary (1854) is een van de meest verfilmde romans uit de westerse literatuur. Nog groter is het aantal verfilmingen waarin direct of indirect ernaar verwezen wordt. De redenen ervoor zijn natuurlijk niet scherp aan te geven, maar de twee meest aannemelijke zijn de volgende. De roman is het verhaal van een eeuwig drama, een drama dat iedereen meemaakt. Of op zijn minst in zijn directe omgeving meemaakt, weliswaar niet zo dramatisch en drastisch, maar toch. Een jonge, romantisch aangelegde vrouw die zich een avontuurlijke toekomst droomt, blijkt getrouwd met een nette, keurige man op het saaie platteland. Ze vindt zichzelf mooi en interessant en dus moet het wel een oneerlijke, onrechtvaardige speling van het lot zijn, dat zij daar op het platteland verpietert, terwijl veel minder interessante en minder mooie vrouwen wel avonturen beleven in de grote stad. Gefrustreerd en teleurgesteld neemt ze minnaars , Rodolphe en Léon, valt ten prooi aan kooplust, raakt diep in de schulden, wordt verraden en verlaten door haar minnaars en uiteindelijk pleegt ze zelfmoord. Het bovarysme, dat nu meestal het desparate housewives-syndroom wordt genoemd, is eeuwig. De roman is bijna als een filmscript geschreven. Prachtige dialogen die zo in een film thuishoren, weidse panorama's en vergezichten, uitgebreide en nauwkeurige beschrijvingen van landschappen, van de kleren van de hoofdpersonen, van interieurs. Er is een voortdurende afwisseling van actie en beschouwing. Vele passages, bij voorbeeld die van de aankomst van de hoofdpersoon in het hotelletje van het dorp waar zij gaat wonen, die van haar wandeling op de eerste ochtend als ze kennis maakt met de inwoners van het dorp, de scene in de kerk wanneer zij haar hart uitstort bij de zielenherder, terwijl die voortdurend de vervelende jeugd in toom moet houden, zijn beschreven alsof je ze door de lens van een camera bekijkt.
