We are in extraordinary times, and extra- ordinarily, we, for the second time, invite you to the 43rd SAS International Pentathlon! With a mixture of optimism and great concern and respect for the ongoing corona pandemic, we prepare for the Pentathlon and sincerely hope that we will be able to run the event in March. Now, I am proud to announce our honorary guest, Patrick Küng Patrick was a highly accomplished Downhill and Super-G skier until he retired from the FIS World Cup in January 2019. He celebrated his greatest victory at the world championships in Beaver Creek in 2015 winning the gold medal in the men’s Downhill race. He was part of the Swiss national team racing in the World Cup for 10 years, with several victories and podium positions both in Super-G and Downhill. From my own experience, I can attest that Patrick is also a great cross- country skier, so the skating specialist pentathletes starting ahead of Patrick on Sunday’s cross-country race should keep an eye over their shoulder! After finishing his athletic career, Patrick remains loyal to the skiing industry. He is now engaged as a sales representative and business developer with Bartholet, a company producing ski lifts. He lives together with his wife, Bianca, and their one-year-old son, Nevio, close to the Flumserberge ski resort. As I am writing this introduction, the corona statistics bode for a grim outlook. The death tolls are high, hospitals’ intensive care wards are close to capacity, we are discouraged from socializing and seeing our beloved ones and friends. Even bigger and more traditional winter sports events, like the Lauberhorn races, are cancelled. With great em- pathy for those hit hard by the pandemic, we accept the possibility of another cancellation of the Pentathlon. But we must also remain opti- mistic and prepare for the event in March in the same manner as we always have. We even go beyond; we will do what we can to adhere to health and safety requirements so that we can run a safe event – even if it means significant adjustments to the well-known programme. Visit www.sas-pentathlon.com for information and updates. You will possibly miss the familiar physical Pentathlon-booklet that has arrived in your mailboxes every year since 1978. The SAS Interna- tional Pentathlon runs with time, and in the name of digitalisation and environmental focus, it is time to take the step into the digital age and distribute this booklet electronically. We sincerely thank our sponsors who endorse our move and for their continued support. I do welcome you to Grindelwald in March!
