Becket Keys Church of England School Year 8 students enjoyed taking their English studies to a deeper level this week. Mrs Ahlner organised a repeat of last year’s very successful experience. VOLUME II - ISSUE III 17 October 2014 PAGE 1 OTHER NEWS HISTORY CLUB DEBATE Students in history club over the last few weeks have been preparing a presentation debate on Mary Seacole and Florence Nightingale. This week, they debated who had made the most !impact and received the most recognition. The debate was very professional and both sides presented strong arguments. Mrs Knowles and Mr Branif declared the debate equal as both sides prepared and debated well. If you wish to join in these fantastic debates, History Club !meets on a Monday after school in C36. Mr Branif said, “I'd just like to add that, with no exaggeration, it was probably one of the best debates I have seen in 12 years of teaching. My A Level students at my previous schools were a poor comparison to what we witnessed yesterday! Four boys in particular - Archie Mowatt, Peter Angeli, Tyler Christian and William Tendler - were superb and not surprisingly are regular attendees of debating club.” ! FRIENDS OF BECKET KEYS AGM The Friends of Becket Keys Annual General Meeting took place on Wednesday evening. The evening began with a presentation from the Mandarin Lead Teacher: Mrs Jing Jing Zhao. Mrs Zhao explained some of the nuances of learning Chinese and even got us speaking a few words and phrases! Mrs Zhao also explained the best ways to support children in learning the language at !home. Next, the formal business of FoBK was underway with Mr Scott-Evans continuing in the role of chair and Mrs Sharp as vice-chair. Parents took the other positions on the management committee. Mr Keith Burrell was elected as secretary; Mrs Penny Richardson was elected as treasurer. Mrs Christine Williams and Mrs Alison Butler were elected as vice secretary and vice !treasurer respectively. Our thanks to these parents willing to take on these responsibilities. FOBK aim to advance the education of the students of Becket Keys Church of England School by providing and assisting in the provision of facilities for education at the school (not usually provided by the school budget). They also aim to foster more extended relationships between !staf, parents and others associated with the school. Three events are already planned for the year ahead: • Parents’ Autumn Ball - Saturday 22nd November - Stock Brook Manor • Students’ Christmas Disco - Thursday 18th December ! • Patronal Festival Picnic - 4th July We would like to hold a quiz night in February/March.
