Trevor Russell Smith, my companion on a welcome third-year road trip across some of the more salubrious parts of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. An enlightening trip that involved a great deal of fried chicken and spirits both bourbon and supernatural. Not to mention the cathartic shooting of several high-caliber firearms – which we selected for their cultural, historical, and aesthetical value – at sections of what would become chapters five and six. James Titterton, for countless interesting examples of military horses from chronicles and being a worthy opponent in an as-yet-unfinished game of Risk Legacy. This is for you. iv Abstract This project looks at the development of horse-care in the late-medieval Latin West through the reception and context of one of its key texts: De medicina equorum by Jordanus Ruffus (d. 1256) a knight-farrier at the scientifically vibrant court of Frederick II (d. 1250) in Sicily. This thesis analyses the development and reception of hippiatric texts in Latin and various vernacular languages in the Latin West, contextualised via a large corpus of material linked to horse health and illness, which includes miracle narratives, guild records, chronicles, and muster rolls. This thesis is situated at the intersection of Animal Studies and the history of health and medicine. It places horse-care into a broader cultural context, arguing that literary, scientific, and theological ideas surrounding horses influenced the construction of horse-medicine. It argues that horse and human medicine were overlapping systems, broadly similar in form, method, and theory and that the only way to understand horse-medicine is within the context of ideas about both human and animal biology and health. Chapters One and Two provide an overview of the historical, literary, and philosophical contexts of the hippiatric tradition, before charting the development and reception of these treatises. Chapter Three looks at the broad range of individuals and groups who provided daily care and interventionary medicine to horses in the Late Middle Ages. Chapter Four discusses the therapies available to medieval horse-carers, comparing the positions of magical and miraculous medicine and describing the dynamics of choice. Chapter Five uses an occupational health paradigm to discuss the construction and maintenance of elite horses by the hippiatric treatises. Finally, Chapter Six looks at ideas of agency, articulacy, and ‘violent care’ to consider the horse as a non-human patient. v List of Illustrations Figure 1: London, British Library, MS. That has been done many times.1 The goal of my research is more limited. All medievalists have been struck by the profound intermingling of the Church and the State, which forms one of the characteristic traits of medieval civilization. How did this intimate relationship operate? How was the old Roman idea of the State absorbed by the increasing influence of the Christian idea, to the point that it led to the theory of the two swords in the twelfth century? That is the question. I have named this progressive, irregular movement political Augustinism, for want of a better term.2 I endeavored to define its formation and to mark some of its stages with precision. If by doing so I was able to open some avenues of research, in which I have directed several of my students, then I will have fully achieved my goal.     List of horse breeds 1 List of horse breeds This page is a list of horse and pony breeds, and also includes terms used to describe types of horse that are not breeds but are commonly mistaken for breeds. While there is no scientifically accepted definition of the term "breed,"[1] a breed is defined generally as having distinct true-breeding characteristics over a number of generations; its members may be called "purebred". In most cases, bloodlines of horse breeds are recorded with a breed registry. However, in horses, the concept is somewhat flexible, as open stud books are created for developing horse breeds that are not yet fully true-breeding. He’s my biggest influence,” said Turner. “My older sister showed. My first horse was actually a jumper before I ever sat on a Saddlebred. He was a Gymkhana horse. We enjoyed horses as a family. Mom didn’t have any interest in riding but she made tail bags and things for us. We would trailer in and out and stay at the campgrounds. It was a big social outing.     Horse Breeds in Medieval Role-playing Games Throughout the Middle Ages the horse was a powerful symbol of social differences but also a tool for the farmer, merchant and fighting classes. While the species varied considerably, as did their names, here is a summary of the main types encountered across Medieval Europe. Great Horse - largest (15-16 hands) and heaviest (1.5-2t) of horses, these giants were the only ones capable of bearing a knight in full plate armour. However such horses lacked speed and endurance. Thus they were usually reserved for tourneys and jousts. Modern equivalent would be a «shire horse». Mules - commonly used as a beast of burden (to carry heavy loads or pull wagons) but also occasionally as a mount. As mules are often both calmer and hardier than horses, they were particularly useful for strenuous support tasks, such as hauling supplies over difficult terrain. Hobby – a tall (13-14 hands) but lightweight horse which is quick and agile. Developed in Ireland from Spanish or Libyan (Barb) bloodstock. This type of quick and agile horse was popular for skirmishing, and was often ridden by light cavalry. Apparently capable of covering 60-70 miles a single day. Sumpter or packhorse - a small but heavier horse with excellent endurance. Used to carry baggage, this horse could be ridden albeit uncomfortably. The modern equivalent would be a “cob” (2-3 mark?).
