~ ~ DIRECTOR’S REPORT

This past year has been one of great sadness but also a year of new and creative directions.

We said good-bye to a great leader in the cardiovascular field and friend of the CSCP, Dr. Wilfred ‘Bill’ Bigelow, who died this past spring. His legacy and memory will live on in the “Bigelow Book Prize” that we have given out since 1995. He will be missed!

However, it is with pride to see how much we have evolved since the Program’s inception. Specifically, we were invited to present the CSCP to the Council of Health Sciences and Social Work Deans where the Program received resounding endorsement. This resulted in the Program becoming even more multidisciplinary and encompassing with all relevant Faculties (Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy and Social Work) planning to sign the MOA as part of the CSCP. As this will have a dramatic impact on all aspects of our activities, we will be busy revisiting our education mandate to be sure that all our partners are well served by the Program. This new initiative is fully multidisciplinary and captures the essence of the University’s “Stepping Up Program” as well as the Faculty of Medicine’s “Academic Plan”, providing further linkages both within and across various disci- plines within the University of Toronto. To that end, it is clear that the new cardiovascular graduate initiative will ultimately supersede the CSCP.

Parallel to this, a joint initiative with the University of Waterloo continues to be under discussion and I antici- pate exciting times ahead for cardiovascular graduate education at the University of Toronto. Linkages with the University of Waterloo will further enrich the students’ experience and we will be utilizing state-of-the-art distance learning tools such as web casting and other e-learning media.

Last year the JCV series graduate courses were rendered more web-based with the course’s seminars and notes mounted on our password protected course section of the CSCP website. One class was actually web cast and if funding applications are successful, we anticipate these courses will be fully web cast.

Our students continue to work hard and congratulations to them for all their successfully organized events on behalf of the CSCP including a very successful “Annual Student Research Day”, “Student Forum and Dinner”, and “Circulation Rounds”.

In this academic year we had 23 Masters and 16 PhD trainees in the Program (see graph below).

~ ~ Our annual student interviews reiterate a high degree of satisfaction. They have expressed particular enthusi- asm for the expansion of the Program into the other Faculties as it is their contention that is enriches the inter- action they have with a diverse group of trainees from varied backgrounds. This past year also saw a number of our students completing their graduate training and going on to pursue either academic or research careers (see Convocated section), which has affected our totals for student numbers. This will be addressed with our upcoming student recruitment initiative. As part of our ongoing tradition, bound copies of each graduating student’s thesis continue to be kept in the Program office (total: 44 MSc/MaSc and 22 PhD).

For the 2005-2006 academic year we plan to continue our current activities and pursue the following priorities:

• Develop innovative curriculum to more appropriately serve the diverse nature of this now multi-Faculty graduate training initiative • Continue developing endowments to provide permanent infrastructure support • Establish and launch the joint initiative with the University of Waterloo • Aggressive student recruitment • Graduate training grant applications for both local and external agencies • Further develop CME programs in cardiovascular sciences • Continue developing web-based courses and web casting

As you read through this report, you will see that the Program continues to grow and enrich our trainee’s expe- riences. Specific details on all activities can be found on our web site at www.cscp.utoronto.ca. I would like to once again recognize the outstanding efforts of Victoria Simpson, our Business Officer, as well as the Executive Committee for their hard work and contributions that have made the Cardiovascular Sciences Collaborative Program the success it is today. And finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our faculty and students for another successful year and to those individuals who have continued to provide both moral and tangible support for this Program.

I continue to be proud to present this Annual Report that summarizes the achievements of the Program’s stu- dents and faculty over the past academic year.

Dr. Carin Wittnich, O.Ont. Director, CSCP Professor of Surgery & Physiology Northrop Frye Scholar

~ ~ MISSION STATEMENT

“The Cardiovascular Sciences Collaborative Program, approved by the University and Ontario Council on Graduate Studies in 1992, and listed in the calendar of the School of Graduate Studies, exists to give formal, organized expression to cardiovascular studies and research at the graduate level. It builds on the strengths of all participating academic units, and other agencies, to enhance the visibility of cardiovascular studies and to facilitate collaborative, interdisciplinary training and research.”

The above mission is achieved by advertising and promoting the importance of, and opportunities in, car- diovascular studies, by making known the results of such studies, by recruitment of excellent students, and by coordinating the graduate collaborative program in cooperation with the academic units in which they are registered. Students in this collaborative program must fulfill the requirements of their home units as well as the Program. Upon graduation the notation “Specialization in Cardiovascular Sciences” will appear on the student’s academic transcript and the Program will present the student with a certificate and gift.

The committee also gratefully acknowledges the educational grant from Aventis Pharma and the support of Victoria Simpson in making this a very successful day.

Congratulations on a job well done!!

Debate Night This exciting event was organized for the cardiovascular community and was attended by diverse members of the university community, including graduate students, medical students, undergraduate students, faculty as well as a strong attendance by the research community. The goal of the debate night is to provide graduate students with the chance to learn and form their own opinions in delicate subject matters that challenge the scientific community. It also provides faculty an opportunity to voice their point-of-view and to allow other levels of trainees to appreciate the issues concerning the community.

The debate was held on March 29, 2005 in the Debates Room at Hart House where the audience participated in “Be it resolved that in the increasingly stressed healthcare system, greater emphasis should be placed on prevention of heart diseases rather than on the development of novel therapies”. Dr. Thomas Parker chaired the debate, which included discussions on many levels. Dr. Cameron Mustard (Public Health Sciences) made very strong arguments for the importance of behavioral prevention, using many historical and epidemiological arguments. While unable to disagree with Dr. Mustard about the importance of disease prevention, Dr. David Alter (Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences) focused on the priority of the healthcare system, with limited resources, in treating the sick as well as possible. The debate included discussion regarding the role of govern- ment, academia, biomedical research and ethics in what is a very complex discussion.

Thank you to Bristol-Myers Squibb for their generous support of an education grant helping us make this a successful event.

Student Forum Night The 3rd Annual CSCP Student Forum and Dinner was held on Wednesday, December 6, 2004 at the Chestnut Residence. Established to provide CSCP students a social highlight at the end of the year, the trainees dis- cussed the selected topic in a forum round table setting. This year’s topic of “MSc vs. PhD: Are we letting just anyone get a PhD and is the MSc an extinct degree?” appeared to be close to the heart of most all students in attendance. The relaxed and informal setting allowed for candid conversation, which the majority found ben- eficial. A few senior members of the CSCP program were able to shed some light onto the value of completing a MSc first before proceeding to train for their PhD, while other MSc-PhD transfer students provided their honest advice in the reasoning of by-passing the MSc degree. Current MSc students shared their thoughts and reasons for pursuing an MSc at the moment. The evening was a great success where open and candid discus- sions about the students’ concerns regarding their current and future states were addressed. Furthermore, it

~ 10 ~ was noted that the event was highly beneficial to some junior attendees in searching for their ideal academic career path. The value of the event and the work of the organizing committee was well received. The evening’s program was followed by a festive dinner.

Women’s Cardiovascular Health The Cardiovascular Sciences Collaborative Program participated in the Centre for Research in Women’s Health Annual General Meeting on November 23, 2004 with a display table. Various students in the Collaborative Program manned a table and provided information to attendees. Thanks to Clifford Lin for setting this up.

CSI: Toronto (Cardiovascular Summer Initiative) This year’s Annual Cardiovascular Sciences Collaborative Summer Program was revamped. CSCP graduate students showcased their research work and discussed the practical aspects of research to the students. Summer students also participated by presenting their own work. This was particularly beneficial as it gave the students an opportunity to try out their presentation skills in an informal, non-judgmental environment. Helpful feed- back was given and the students were able to discuss the skills they were learning in greater detail.

The student’s visited the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute’s Cardiac Centre (Rumsey Centre). They sat in on an introduction/orientation session with new patients and received a tour of the facility. In addition, they also got the opportunity to meet and interact with the patients about their experiences and got a first hand look at the benefits of cardiac rehabilitation. Thank you to Rob Bertelink at the Centre for making this an exciting aspect of the Program. A second field trip was organized to the Toronto Western Hospital, Retinal Blood Flow Lab. Students served as subjects for demonstrations of state of the art instruments like the Retinal Thickness Analyser, Laser Blood Flowmeter, and the Optical Coherence Tomographer.

Thanks to Pat Rose for organizing such an interesting and successful program.

Bigelow Book Prize This prize was established in 1995 by the Cardiovascular Sciences Collaborative Program to recognize and honor a pioneer clinician and scientist in the field of cardiovascular sciences. Awardees should exemplify the personal traits of Dr. Bigelow - curiosity, drive, and scientific integrity. The award is given in every year that a qualified student is identified. Qualifications include sustained academic scientific excellence, innovative experimental approaches, original discoveries and good scientific productivity. Some weight is given to work that has recognizable clinical relevance, especially that which promises to improve patient care. The Bigelow Book Prize consists of 2 books written by Dr. W.G. Bigelow entitled “Cold Hearts” and “Mysterious Heparin” and a keeper plaque created to honor Dr. Bigelow. Appropriate candidates are identified and the final deci- sion is made by the Program Committee. This award is presented at the Annual Student Research Day and we were extremely pleased that Dr. Bigelow was once again able to participate in this years’ award ceremony and interact with the trainees.

1995 – Dr. John S. Ikonomidis 1996 – Ms. Shona M. Torrance 1997 – Dr. Vivek Rao 1998 – Dr. Bryce Cowan 1999 – Dr. Gideon Cohen 2000 – Dr. Michael Borger 2001 – Dr. Saeid Babaei 2002 – Mr. Wm. Jack Wallen 2003 – Dr. Paul W.M. Fedak 2004 – Dr. Nathalie Lapointe 2005 – Dr. Karim Bandali

Karim Bandali received his PhD from the Department of Physiology. His research focused on children undergoing corrective heart surgery who are often exposed to high oxygen levels (hyperoxia). Since oxygen is essential to life, its potentially detrimental effects when administered in excess are rarely consid- ered. Karim’s Ph.D. thesis showed that exposure to hyperoxia can lead to the development of a variety of detrimental metabolic and functional cardiovascular complications in the newborn in an experimental setting. These novel findings have significant impli- cations in the clinical use of hyperoxia which impact on pediatric cardiac patient care. After completing his PhD, Karim joined The Michener Institute for Applied Health Sciences as a member of the faculty and an associate researcher. L-R: Dr. Karim Bandali, Dr. Wilfred Bigelow, Dr. Margaret Rand

~ 13 ~ Lorne Phenix Graduate Award This award was made possible by a generous donation in the memory of Mr. Lorne Phenix by Mrs. Geraldine Phenix. It is her hope that this award will focus attention on the issue of heart disease – which is still the #1 killer of both men and women in Canada. In addition, women who have heart problems are at least equal if not at greater risk than men and Mrs. Phenix hopes that this award will serve to encourage trainees to pursue this area of research to address this particular problem. It is awarded to a graduate student in the Faculty of Medicine on the basis of research and academic excellence. The award consists of a cash prize and certificate and is presented to the recipient at the Annual Student Research Day. Appropriate candidates are identified and a winner is selected by a subcommittee chaired by Dr. Donna Stewart. This award is presented at the Annual Student Research Day.

2001 – Wm. Jack Wallen, PhD 2002 – Wm. Jack Wallen, PhD 2003 – Shathiyah Kulandavelu, PhD 2004 – Rachel Mitchell, MSc

Rachel Mitchell is an MSc candidate in the Institute of Medical Science. Her research is on the differences between men and women undergoing coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery with a focus on mental health and depression. Approximately 30% of the 500,000 CABG procedures performed a year in North America are on women, who are thought, by some to fare worse. Rachel’s research followed men and women undergoing elective CABG surgery to try to get a better understanding of depression patterns and how they differ. Her work found that women were more depressed than men before surgery but improved to a level comparable to men after surgery, even after controlling for other relevant factors. This work has important implications and suggests that depression should not preclude women from CABG surgery. Upon completion of her MSc, Rachel hopes to attend medical school and pursue a L-R: Rachel Mitchell, Dr. Margaret Rand, career as a clinician/scientist with a special interest in Ms. Kathryn Phenix women’s health.

Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Funds (OSOTF) Award The OSOTF award refers to a class of awards that have resulted from the Ontario government’s “matching” program. Under the program every dollar of donation received for student assistance has been matched by the government as well as the university on a dollar-for-dollar basis. The Cardiovascular Sciences Collaborative Program participates in this program. There are two major conditions for all OSOTF awards; recipients must be Ontario residents and demonstrate financial need. However, the Program has additional eligibility criteria that must be adhered to, including excellence in science and academic performance. One competition is held per academic year.

~ 14 ~ The applications are handled centrally through the Office of the Associate Dean, Inter-Faculty and Graduate Affairs. Applications pertaining to the CSCP are sent to us and are then adjudicated by a subcommittee chaired by Dr. Margaret Rand. Committee recommendations are then forwarded to the OSOTF Awards Committee (Faculty of Medicine). This year’s recipients were Nesime Askin, PhD, Physiology; Rami Bishay, MSc, Physiology, and Danny Quaglietta, MSc, Physiology

Ontario Graduate School Science and Technology (OGSST) The OGSST program is designed to encourage excellence in graduate studies in science and technology. The program is supported through funds provided by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities and by funds raised by the University of Toronto and the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Ontario. To be awarded to graduate students at the University of Toronto who are pursuing cardiovascular/stroke research. Students must have maintained an overall A- average over the last two years of study at the post-secondary level and exhibit research ability/potential, good communication skills and interpersonal/leadership abilities.
