21 G-A-Y Camp Attack presents Miley Cyrus + Eurovision Special WORDS BY 09/05/14 CLIFF JOANNOU Heaven, Villiers Street, PHOTOS BY WC2N 6NG CHRIS JEPSON

CAN YOU BELIEVE the timing? Rumours erupted all over the web after we’d gone to print on last week’s issue that Miley Cyrus was to perform a surprise gig at Friday’s G-A-Y Camp Attack. So, we set about to torturing Jeremy Joseph in the dungeon at QX Towers to find out more by stitching his eyes wide open and forcing him to watch The Drag Queens of London on repeat. He eventually relented (seven minutes into the first episode) and revealed all. Yes, Miss Cyrus WAS performing! It’s not as if it was enough that Rita Ora was already billed to perform at G-A-Y on the Saturday night. It’s not as if it was enough that Gay Star News and Visit Denmark were co-hosting last week’s Camp Attack with a Eurovision special. It’s not enough that they were giving away a flight for two to Copenhagen with front row seats to the Eurovision final. It’s not enough that Jay Aston, original Bucks Fizz member, was giving the prize away. (OK, actually maybe that was more than enough.) But, no, they had to go and throw Miley Cyrus into the mix! Now, listen here y’all: I was never really a Miley fan. But this was a pop culture moment to be cherished! I mean Miley Cyrus on stage at G-A-Y with Jay Aston? (OK, well maybe just the Miley Cyrus bit!) And so, after clubbers Catalina and Jordan won the prize and were zoomed off to Copenhagen, we “Everyone’s a little gay, just were the real winners as Miley some people are more than strutted on stage. And boy did others. All it takes is one cocktail. she take over, working her way And if it doesn’t work just sprinkle a through album cuts like ‘SMS’, little something in their drink!” ‘4 x 4’, ‘Love Money Party’, ‘Get It Right’, ‘On My Own’ and “If I was a dude I think I’d have a really smashes ‘Wrecking Ball’ and ‘We big, fat cock.” Can’t Stop’. We were totally converted. “There’s so many of you I would take home And to polish it all and do so many dirty things to. There’s always off, she had us bent something I can strap on...” over double with anecdotes into the “One day I decided I was going to start being mind of Miley: myself. When you stop giving a fuck you realise how much you can do.”

Amen!

XXL: EUROVISION 10/05/14 Pulse, 1 Invicta Plaza, WORDS BY Southwark, SE1 9UF TOM REDKID PHOTOS BY MARK STOREY

THE NIGHT COULDN’T have got any happier and humpier than XXL’s Saturday night Eurovision Party. The club was fully electrified with the joy of Austria’s Mister-sister Conchita Wurst, the bearded ‘lady’, winning Eurovision. What else could possibly put a smile on the face of a bearded burly biker daddy than seeing one of his own kickin arse and takin home the trophy! Like Vikings celebrating a blood-soaked victory at Valhalla, the biggest and brawniest pounded their fists on the tables as ‘Hildegard’ slew the competition with her power-ballad in where else, but the land of the Danes. The perfect song for the perfect warrior in the perfect setting. All meant to whip up the XXL soldiers into a fury that, thankfully, they let loose on the dance floors steered by those Captains of the longboats, Christian M., Alex Logan, Joe Egg, Andy Almighty and Stewart Styles. A packed hothouse of sweaty muscle and bearded hipsters filled up the cavernous Pulse with its multiple dance rooms, four bars and glowing chill-out room. It seemed as if every hot daddy and his humpy sidekick were there and ready to party. From the familiar swingin dance hits of the Retro room to the hard labour grunt bass of the main dance floor, not a spot was left open save for a li’l bum to bum room neath the disco balls. Lorenzo, fresh from Florence gushed, “This place, he is so wonderful! The space, the music, the men, the contest! We have nothing like it back home!” Sharing the pride of Queen Conchita’s Eurovison win, we toured the back country to thank the voters only to be ravaged by the locals, who ripped open our gown, tore off our sash and tied us down with it. We left crown marks on a lot of bellies and made our way out. We arrived a contender and left a champion, one and all.

IT MAY HAVE been the Eurovision Camp Contest everywhere else in the world, but in our bubble, Saturday night was owned by one fierce woman belting out tunes to a bunch of gays; Rita Ora. The last time Miss Ora appeared at Heaven, she’d already released a string of hits, so when we heard she was back to perform her latest tune ‘I Will Never Let You Down’ we were there quicker than you can say “bearded lady who?” There must have been something androgynous in the air that night as Rita emerged with hair slicked back in dapper suit belting. But she soon ‘R.I.P’ to her clothes as she stripped down throughout her performance. Naturally, the crowd was loving it, because that’s ‘How We Do’ after a few vodkas, too. The singer also sang a rock rendition of her single ‘Hot Right Now’ and ‘Closer’ off her upcoming album. But we came to hear that girl sing her debut - and she killed it. You thought Eurovision was camp? Girl, you don’t know camp until there’s a club full of queens dancing to that track with more confetti than a Gypsy wedding. Was that Lindsay Lohan at the side of the stage? Damn, we wanted to be the hottest mess in that club. We also bumped into the girls of Neon Jungle; was Heaven the new celeb hangout? Must be, why else would we be there.

EastBloc “DISHed” up a Saturday night feast to a flesh-eatin crowd ravenously celebrating that Eurovision was finally won by a bearded tranny--Austria’s Conchita Wurst, who had premeired her top gong song “Rise Like A Phoenix” at EB’s SEPM not three weeks ago, interviewed and predicted to win by moi (you’re welcome, babes)! Main Course Dining Room was well-fed by chef Tom Stephan sprinklin some serious fairydust tweakin us naive, starry-eyed, “fresh-from-Eurovision-win” virgins just right for a trip to the rough side of town where Borja Pena stuffed our mouths (and bums) full of hotter, spicier enchilladas that dared only the most fearless of our crew to venture to the back Tapass room. Just as it said on the tin, QBoy’s mix of 90’s hip-hop- r’n’b smacked our booties red for Cathal to ride us raw and pimp us out. Virgins no more, we crawled over to the Sidedish club shed. Ollywood was a much nicer neighbour, took pity on us and served us his warm homemade goodies of happy ‘pop ‘n’ hop’ and all seemed rosy--- until, that dark prince of the decks, the DJ of Goth-shock-rock, Ray Noir crept onboard to spook! Backed by an inverted Norwegian flag emblazened with Noir’s cryptic symbols next to the ominous teaser vids on the big screen, Nosferatu’s black-nailed talons spun dark funk creeprock driving his fangs deep into our souls! What began as sweet, innocent “Ms. Eurovision” were left deflowered, devoured daughters of darkness. Now that’s a night to make any bearded tranny feel like a winner!

YOU KNOW WHAT your problem is? Y’all been doin the same ol’ thang every week after week. What you need is a li’l diversion, a li’l something to “spice” up your life, and no I ain’t talkin bout those past it bitches! Saturday night, we threw on our cha-cha heels and headed to Exilio, at The Latin Groove in Archway where the night got hotter, the talk got sweeter and the crowd got a helluva lot sexier; a hacienda hothouse of finger-lickin Electro-Latino beats fused with a tribute to Colombian superstars Grupo-Niche. DJ/Promoter Gloria heated up the floor with heel-spinnin Reggeaton, Cumbia, Salsa, Merengue, Bachata and Vallenato that had the packed club of hombres, chicas and their lovers sashayin the night away. A cabana club with ‘La Familia’ vibe tucked in this corner of N19. “We do it for the fun,” smiled our hostess Lina, 22. Eighteen years on and Exilio is the only club night for the Latino LGBT community and their friends.” We certainly weren’t short of friends there as no one was too shy to dance and more than happy to show us newbies how. Now that we got the rhythm down, we’ll be back for more. Exilio is closed this Saturday 17th May. The next event is at Juanchito on Saturday 24th May at KCLSU (Guy’s Bar, Boland House, London Bridge, SE1 9RT) 10pm-3am.

NO BANK HOLIDAY would be complete without an RVT Sunday treat and we gorged ourselves on a whole box of nuts-- the Charlie Hides TV show. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hides left the door to the asylum unlatched again and let loose its scariest inmates: Cher, Madge, Gags, Delia, Justin, Britney, Christina, Kylie, Lana and everyone too big for a surname. Ward matron Kandi Kane-Baxter pulled no punches as she lampooned every sacred cow this side of the Ganges. Followed by happy homemaker Delia giving us some helpful culinary tips. She left to wash her mouth out, and the real star of the show, Cher, brought down the house singing, strutting and dealing with those pesky phone calls. A tour-de-force multi-media mash- up of news, vids, clips, songs and sing-a-longs in a show tighter than Loquesha’s thong, Charlie had the RVT packed to overflowing kept happy and homey thanks in no small part to the charms of door hostess Pip and crew. “I have never laughed so much,” grinned bar manager Ze Pereira who chose RVT for his “first weekend off in ages.” We doubled-over as she/he laid it on thick as pancake make-up. After she wiped up the floor with us, DJs Rob C, Sean Sirs, Simon Le Vans and Rich B dragged us back out there draining that last bit of energy we thought we had saved for Monday.

DR ALEX, GP

Hi Dr Alex I get really bad hay fever – mostly sneezing but also puffy eyes; nothing really helps. I’m getting married in 3 weeks’ time and am desperate to look good on the day. If we get some sunny weather I’m going to look like I’ve been crying for 100 years. I have seen my GP which was pretty hopeless as he just advised me to buy the over the counter medicines and so it got me looking online. I have read about a hay fever jab than people say is really effective, but I’d have to see a private doctor about it. What is the injection and do you think it would work for me? Almost-married Jon

Hi Jon Thanks for your letter. The injection you have read about is called Kenalog. It’s a type of steroid called a corticosteroid and works by suppressing the body’s immune system to prevent it having an allergic reaction to pollen and thereby causing all the typical hay fever symptoms. It’s a very effective treatment that lasts two to three months. But, unfortunately, it has a down side. For a few weeks after being given it leaves the body open to infections such as chicken pox and measles and has other possible side effects including bone pain, easy bruising and bleeding, severe stomach PRESS RELEASES INTERNET DESIGN and abdominal pain, shortness of breath and irregular [email protected] If6was9design.com heartbeats.
