I was reminded of such by a communication that came my way from AMPAS (the Oscar® people) listing nine categories’ shortlists of potential nominees. Now, they’ve been doing that shortlist thing with Foreign Language films for quite some time – there’s a lot of films out there in the world, it would be rather too much for the Academy members to have to watch them all! – but, to my knowledge, they’ve not before done it with any other category. It may be it’s for the same reason of sheer volume as above, but I guess what it also does is allows a greater number of films a reason to mention their Academy Award status in their advertising. I can see it now, “Academy Award Nomination shortlisted…” written on the poster. Where will it all end I wonder, “Academy Award Nomination eligible…”? As luck would have [nothing to do with] it, one of the films on the Foreign Language short list – which at this point in time seems the overwhelming favourite – is Bong Joon Ho’s utterly brilliant Parasite, which takes its place alongside a programme of films that is simplythe best line-up of new cinema I’ve seen in a long time. There’s not just the aforementioned South Korean masterpiece, there’s Sam Mendes’ extraordinary ‘one-take’ wonder 1917 (google ‘1917 behind the scenes featurette’ and prepare to simply have to see this film); Taika (‘Wilderpeople’) Waititi’s WWII, Nazi Germany-set, Jojo Rabbit; Armando Iannucci’s breathless Dickens, The Personal History of David Copperfield; Robert Egger’s uniquely bonkers, fog-bound The Lighthouse; Kidman, Robbie and Theron taking on the Fox News patriarchy in Bombshell; and to cap it all off, and possibly the best of the lot, Céline Sciamma’sexquisite Portrait of a Lady on Fire. -
Introduction
1 Introduction Philippe Garrel, an irregular auteur In April 2013, a retrospective of Philippe Garrel’s fi lms took place at the Magic Cin é ma, a municipal theatre in Bobigny, outside Paris. Such a location, on the periphery of the French capital, may seem inappropriate for the work of a longstanding director whom the fi lm critic Serge Daney spoke of as ‘le seul grand cin é aste fran ç ais de ma g é n é ration’ 1 (Jousse 1991 : 58). But both the accolade and this peripheral location are revealing of the ambiguous position Garrel has occupied within French fi lm culture during the last half century. While held in high esteem by peers and critics, he is only beginning now to receive some mainstream and popular recognition. This increased recognition is evidenced by the fi rst French international conference on Garrel that took place at Paris Nanterre University in November 2018 and by a more recent retrospective of Garrel’s work at the Cin é math è que Fran ç aise in September 2019. Garrel’s status as a critically respected yet marginal fi gure may be explained by the fact that his cinema occupies an uncertain terrain in the history of French cinema, somewhere between the New Wave and the vast heterogeneous body of French cinema that developed in its aftermath. This anomalous position is compounded by an oeuvre that often resists straightforward exegetical criticism, and challenges traditionally held critical oppositions such as those of the real and the imaginary, documentary and fi ction, political and personal, avant- garde and mainstream. -

Michael Zryd Found Footage-Film als diskursive Metageschichte Craig Baldwins Tribulation 991 Eine philosophische Prämisse, die schon sehr, sehr lange besteht: Wenn man wissen will, was in einer Kultur vor sich geht, sollte man einen Blick auf die Dinge werfen, die als selbstverständlich betrachtet werden, und sich darauf konzentrieren, anstatt auf das, was sie einem zeigen wollen. (Bruce Conner, zitiert in Wees 1993, 103) Der Found Footage-Film ist ein spezielles Subgenre des Experimental- (oder Avantgarde-) Kinos, bei dem vorgefundenes Filmmaterial in neue Produktionen integriert wird.2 Die Etymologie des englischsprachigen Ausdrucks weist darauf hin, dass er sich der Aufdeckung „versteckter Bedeutungen“ im Filmmaterial verschrieben hat. Footage ist ein längst veraltetes britisches (und jetzt amerikani- sches) Maß für die Filmlänge, das Assoziationen an einen Wust von industriel- lem Material – Abfall, Müll – hervorruft, in dem sich jede Menge Schätze „fin- den“ lassen. Found Footage ist nicht dasselbe wie Archivmaterial. Während das Archiv als offizielle Einrichtung historische Aufzeichnungen von unbrauchba- ren Aufzeichnungen, den Outtakes, trennt, ist ein großer Teil des in experimen- tellen Found Footage-Filmen verwendeten Materials nicht archiviert, sondern in privaten Sammlungen, kommerziellen Bildagenturen, Trödelläden und Abfall- eimern untergekommen oder wurde im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes auf der 1 Mein Dank gilt Robin Curtis und Tess Takahashi für die geduldige und unschätzbare Aufmerk- samkeit, die sie diesem Projekt entgegengebracht haben. EMBASSY OF FRANCE – PRESS RELEASE French Film Program Signs up 100 th University TOURNÉES FESTIVAL IS A HIT ON AMERICAN CAMPUSES New York, February 7 —For the first time ever, more than 100 American universities are taking part in the Tournées Festival , which brings contemporary French films to campus screens . In all, 108 universities are participating, from 41 States and Puerto Rico. This year, the Tournées Festival will distribute approximately $180,000 in grants, with each participating institution receiving a grant of $1,800 to show a minimum of five films. First launched by the French-American Cultural Exchange (FACE) and the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in 1995 , the Tournées Festival was conceived to help isolated universities have access to new French films that are normally only distributed in big cities. Since its inception, the program has partnered with hundreds of universities and made it possible for more than 250,000 students to discover French-language films . It is hoped that participating universities will subsequently be able to launch their own self-sustaining French film festivals. To promote French-American cooperation, a key mission of FACE and the French Cultural Services , American professors are deeply involved in the selection process, both for the universities and the films. Three distinguished Americans selected which universities to support: Dudley Andrew , Professor of Film and Comparative Literature at Yale University , Livia Bloom , Assistant Curator at the Museum of the Moving Image, and Sonia Lee , Professor of French and African Literature at Trinity College. And, every year, Adrienne Halpern , co-founder of Rialto Films, Annette Insdorf , Professor of Graduate Film Studies at Columbia University, Richard Pena , Film Curator at the Lincoln Center, and Jean Vallier , Film Critic, help select the films that are included in the program. -
