The twelve middle blessings only involve human needs. This is why on Shabbat we do not say all nineteen 10:45am Sefer HaMitzvot Shiur, Max Singer Beit Midrash brachot. If a person has a member of his family who is sick, he will recall it when he says the blessing in the Amidah for healing, and s/he will be troubled. Shabbat was given to Israel for holiness, delight, rest, and not for worry. We therefore only say the first three and last three brachot, with a single blessing (kedushat haY om, that speaks of the sanctity of the Shabbat) in the middle. King David said (Tehillim 119:164): “Seven in the day I will Shabbat Safety, Security & First Aid praise You.” This is a reference to the seven blessings of the Amidah that one says on “Safety & Security is everyone’s responsibility. Shabbat. Shabbat is called “the day” because it is a unique day of rest. Parking Notice: The gated parking lots on the north side of our building and along Stirling Road are locked for the duration of Shabbat 3 4 D’var Torah : Rabbi Yosef Weinstock In Parshat Haazinu we read: הַּצּורתָּמִים פָּעֳלֹו כִי כָּלדְּרָּ כָּיו מִשְּפָּט אֵל אֱמּונָּה וְּאֵין עָּוֶלצַדִיק וְּיָּשָּר הּוא: The deeds of the [Mighty] Rock are perfect, for all His ways are just; a faithful God, without injustice He is righteous and Yashar – upright. The Avot, patriarchs, are often described as Y esharim, and Chazal occasionally refers to Sefer Bereishit as "Sefer Ha-yashar." The Netziv explains that Y ashar denotes proper interpersonal conduct – when integrity and respect are shown even to those whose lifestyle we disapprove. For instance, Avraham prayed on behalf of the corrupt city of Sedom, whose values and conduct ran in direct opposition to everything he stood for. Yitzchak responded forgivingly to the leadership of Gerar even after they drove him from the city. The patriarchs were Y esharim because they acted in a dignified, respectful manner even towards those with whom they profoundly disagreed. The Netziv goes on to explain that in this pasuk in Haazinu, Moshe foreshadows the destruction of the Second Temple, a calamity that God brought upon the Jewish people on account of the baseless hatred they displayed towards one another. That generation consisted of many distinguished scholars who were otherwise tzadikim, but they quarreled bitterly with one another. Every disagreement immediately bred mutual accusations of heresy, and the disputants treated one another with ruthless hatred. Moshe here declares that God is Tzadik ve-Yashar, He demands both spiritual piety (tzadik) as well as respectful manners (yashar). Sukkot This message contained within our Parsha is especially timely and relevant in our highly polarized culture. 15-16 Tishrei 5780 It’s okay to disagree, even passionately. But when doing so, we must be careful to do it in an agreeable manner. We should listen to what the other side is saying, for it can help us October 14-15, 2019 understand them and even ourselves better. We should not impugn the other side’s motives. And we should think about “the day after”; how we plan on living together and working together going forward with those whom we share many values, while disagreeing on certain issues. Thank you to our Sukkot Sponsors One of the names for the Jewish People, utilized in this morning’s Parsha, is Yeshurun. Ibn Ezra suggests that the name “Yeshurun,” is derived from the Hebrew word Y ashar – Beit Midrash Minyan Aviel & Atara Raab in honor of Zevi's first aliyah, Ellie's “straight.” It refers to the Jewish People in our ideal state, when we represent to the world Kiddush in the Sukkah, birthday, and Atara's passing of the National licensing a path that is passionate and opinionated and maybe argumentative, but always done in the first day of Sukkot exam for Marriage and Family Therapy spirit of Y ashar. Let us learn from Hashem’s model of Tzadik V’yashar to engage in debates within the Jewish community from a spirit of civility, good will and unity. All other Kiddushim in Shabbat Sponsors Group On Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur in each Amidah we ask Hashem: the Sukkah both days Sukkot וְּיִשְּתַחֲוּו לְּפָּנֶיָך כָּלהַבְּרּואִים. וְּיֵעָּׂשּו כֻלָּם אֲגֻדָּהאֶחָּת לַעֲׂשֹות רְּ צֹונְָּך בְּלֵבָּב שָּלֵם. to create a scenario in which “all of creation will worship You, and they will be bound together as one, to carry out Your will with an undivided heart.” The theme of Jewish unity continues into the holiday of Sukkot, when we bring together the four species to fulfill the mitzvah. Each one is different, and each one Brotherhood’s Meals in the Sukkah represents a different type of Jew with different perspectives. It is probably the hardest article I have had to write. As my last Messenger article, it is one piece in the process of saying goodbye as my family and I prepare to move to Washington, DC. This process is being made even harder by the situation in which we find ourselves. Not being able to meet together in person is promoting the necessity to change our expectations and ways of doing things. Perhaps this is a fitting message for this final article. Things are going to be different. Things are going to be different for me, and they’re going to be different for you.
