Dual Format Dvd and Blu-Ray March 31 2015 DUAL FORMAT DVD AND BLU-RAY MARCH 31st 2015 Arrow Video is excited to continue its expansion into North America with the Blu-ray release of Tonino Valerii’s Spaghetti Western Day of Anger [I Giorni dell’ira, aka Gunlaw] starring genre icons Lee Van Cleef and Giuliano Gemma. This exclusive Blu-ray will be made available from 31st March 2015. Featuring a brand new restoration from the original 35mm Techniscope camera negative, this release presents both versions of the film - the original 114-minute cut that opened in Italy (with English or Italian soundtracks) and the more familiar 86-minute version that was released internationally (in English). Coming loaded with extra features, the disc will also include brand new interviews with screenwriter Ernesto Gastaldi and Tonino Valerii’s biographer Roberto Curti, plus a previously unreleased 2008 interview with Valerii himself, and a scene that was deleted from the longer cut of the film before being reinstated in the shorter version. The disc will also feature a reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Reinhard Kleist. The enclosed booklet features new writing on the film, its stars and locations by spaghetti western expert Howard Hughes, illustrated with original poster images. Synopsis When Sergio Leone turned Lee Van Cleef into a major star with For a Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, the actor sensibly stayed in Italy to make several more spaghetti westerns, including this one from Leone’s former assistant Tonino Valerii that genre aficionados rank amongst the best ever made. Giuliano Gemma plays street cleaner Scott Mary, relentlessly bullied by the people of the small town of Clifton. When legendarily ruthless master gunfighter Frank Talby (Van Cleef) rides into town, Scott seizes the opportunity to lift himself out of the gutter, and possibly even surpass Talby’s own skills. But what is Talby doing in Clifton in the first place? This lively, intelligent western, notable for the chemistry between its charismatic leads, some memorable action set-pieces (including a rifle duel on horseback that has to be seen to be believed), and a jazzy Riz Ortolani score, is presented here in an exclusive high-definition restoration from the original Techniscope negative. Special Features Brand new restoration of the original 35mm Techniscope camera negative High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) and Standard Definition DVD presentation of both the Italian and International versions of the film Original uncompressed mono audio Newly translated English subtitles for Italian audio and optional English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing for English audio Brand new interview with screenwriter Ernesto Gastaldi Brand new interview with Tonino Valerii’s biographer Roberto Curti Previously unreleased 2008 interview with Tonino Valerii Deleted scene Reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Reinhard Kleist Booklet featuring new writing on the film by spaghetti western expert Howard Hughes, illustrated with original archive stills Specs Release Date Monday 31st March 2015 Certificate M Formats Blu-ray/DVD Language English Running Time 114 minutes/86 minutes Number of Discs 3 Region A (Blu-ray)/1 (DVD) Aspect Ratio 2.35:1 Audio Italian/English 1.0 Mono SRP $39.95 Blu-ray Cat Number MVD7120BR Arrow Video Official Channels https://www.facebook.com/ArrowVideo https://twitter.com/ArrowFilmsVideo http://www.youtube.com/arrowvideouk http://arrowvideo.tumblr.com/ For further information and Blu-ray review copies please contact: Marc Foley-Comer: [email protected] .

Issue #70 Featuring: TURN I’ll KILL YOU, THE FAR SIDE OF JERICHO, Spaghetti Western Poster Art, Spaghetti Western Film Locations in the U.S.A., Tim Lucas interview, DVD reviews WAI! #70 The Swingin’ Doors Welcome to another on-line edition of Westerns…All’Italiana! kicking off 2008. Several things are happening for the fanzine. We have found a host or I should say two hosts for the zine. Jamie Edwards and his Drive-In Connection are hosting the zine for most of our U.S. readers (www.thedriveinconnection.com) and Sebastian Haselbeck is hosting it at his Spaghetti Westerns Database for the European readers (www.spaghetti- western.net). Our own Kim August is working on a new website (here’s her current blog site http://gunsmudblood.blogspot.com/ ) that will archive all editions of the zine starting with issue #1. This of course will take quite a while to complete with Kim still in college. Thankfully she’s very young as she’ll be working on this project until her retirement 60 years from now. Anyway you can visit these sites and read or download your copy of the fanzine whenever you feel the urge. Several new DVD and CD releases have been issued since the last edition of WAI! and co-editor Lee Broughton has covered the DVDs as always. The CDs will be featured on the last page of each issue so you will be made aware of what is available. We have completed several interviews of interest in recent months. One with author Tim Lucas, who has just recently released his huge volume on Mario Bava, appears in this issue.

  • Spaghetti Western
*IT’SJUSTACOINCIDENCETHAT4OFTHEMSTARGIULIANOGEMMA. by Matt ☐ 1) DAY OF ANGER (1967, Tonino Valerii) An epic of greed and revenge wherein the lowly town street sweeper (Gemma) in the town of Clifton falls under the influence and tutelage of notorious gunslinger Frank Talby (the legendary Lee Van Cleef in one of his very best performances). While going about his own elaborate plan to take over Clifton and become its despotic landlord, he trains Scott to become a ruthless killer in his own right, and it’s only a matter of time before the apprentice comes into conflict with his master. Imagine the entire original STAR WARS trilogy as a Spaghetti Western. ☐ 2) THE PRICE OF POWER (1969, Tonino Valerii) This time Gemma is pursuing his own revenge against his father’s killers when he finds himself embroiled in the conspiracy to assassinate President James Garfield. The film draws loosely on the real account of Garfield’s murder but is also an explicit, deliberate parallel to the Kennedy assassination, and its intricate plotting and political subtext make it one of the most unusual entries in the genre. ☐ 3) A PISTOL FOR RINGO (1965, Duccio Tessari) Here Gemma plays “Angel Face” aka Ringo, a notorious killer who at the outset is arrested for gunning down four men in a duel. While he’s locked up, a gang of bandits storms the Mayor’s hacienda and takes him and his family hostage. Ringo offers himself up to help infiltrate the gang in exchange for his freedom and a cut of their stolen loot. More of an action-comedy than a straight western, this is frequently playful and quite funny even with its sharp turns into violence.

Traditionally, both academic and populist responses to these films have focused on the output of a small number of maverick directors that have been elevated critically above their peers. Conversely, this thesis aligns itself with a more recent trend towards eschewing auteurist readings in favour of examining the giallo as a broad ‘filone’ (cycle) defined by shared iconography, narrative conventions and underlying anxieties.
