Subtitling and Dubbing Songs in Musical Films
SUBTITLING AND DUBBING SONGS IN MUSICAL FILMS FECHA DE RECEPCIÓN: 4 de marzo FECHA DE APROBACIÓN: 17 de abril Por: Pp. 107-125. Martha García Gato Abstract Audiovisual translation (AVT) is a type of translation subjected to numerous constraints. Until now, many studies have been carried out about subtitling and dubbing in films. In musical films, which have been less studied, language transfer is mainly made through songs and, due to their characteristics, their translation is additionally constrained. This article provides some insights into some elements that make translation of songs for dubbing and subtitling a complex task using songs from the musical film My Fair Lady. Keywords Subtitling, Dubbing, Musicals, Translation, My Fair Lady. Parodic Dubbing in Spain: Digital Manifestations of Cultural Appropriation, Repurposing and Subversion 1. Introduction Having Be
The Journal of Specialised Translation Issue 32 – July 2019 Parodic dubbing in Spain: digital manifestations of cultural appropriation, repurposing and subversion Rocío Baños, University College London ABSTRACT This paper sets out to explore the phenomenon of parodic dubbing by examining its origins and situating it in its current context. Parodic dubbing symbolises the union of two loathed but highly influential forms of artistic and cultural appropriation, used innovatively in the current digital era. The aim is also to investigate how parodic dubbing reflects the politics of audiovisual translation in general, and of dubbing in particular, revealing similarities and divergences with official dubbing practices. This is done drawing on examples from two different Spanish parodic dubbings from an iconic scene from Pulp Fiction (Tarantino 1994). Throughout this work, theoretical perspectives and notions through which parodic dubbing can be examined (among others, rewriting, ideological manipulation, cultural and textual poaching, participatory culture or fandubbing) are presented, framing this phenomenon in the current discussion of fan practices and participatory culture, and drawing on theoretical perspectives and notions developed within Translation Studies and Media Studies. The investigation of the relationship between parodic dubbing, translation and subversion has illustrated that this and other forms of cultural appropriation and repurposing challenge our traditional understanding of notions such as originality, authorship and fidelity. In addition, it has revealed how such practices can be used as a site of experimentation and innovation, as well as an ideological tool. KEYWORDS Parodic dubbing, fundubbing, fandubbing, subversion, cultural appropriation. 1. Introduction Having been both praised and demonised by some scholars, intellectuals, viewers and film directors (see for instance the discussion in Yampolsky 1993 or in Nornes 2007), dubbing rarely escapes controversy. -

Bud Spencer És Terence Hill Filmjeinek Sikere Marketinges Szemmel
BUD SPENCER ÉS TERENCE HILL FILMJEINEK SIKERE MARKETINGES SZEMMEL PAPP-VÁRY ÁRPÁD FERENC PHD Bud Spencer és Terence Hill a filmtörténelem egyik, ha nem a legismertebb párosa. Bár fő mozis sikereik a hetvenes években és a nyolcvanas évek első felében születtek, filmjeik sokadik ismétlése mind mai a napig százezreket ültet a képernyő elé. -
The Age of Innocence Showcase Tribute to Claudia Cardinale
PRESS RELEASE The age of innocence showcase Tribute to Claudia Cardinale From Monday 5 to Monday 26 March 2018, 3.30 p.m. “Mario Gromo” Library/Mediatheque – Events Room - Via Matilde Serao 8/A, Turin tel. +39 011 8138 599 - email: [email protected] Following the success of the showcases offered by the Mario Gromo Library/Mediatheque over the past months, in March it is the turn of a tribute to one of the most representative and beloved Italian actresses: Claudia Cardinale. Focusing on the time span between 1959 and 1961, during which the actress shot a good 15 films, The age of innocence. Tribute to Claudia Cardinale is proposing a significant selection of titles which illustrate this thespian’s maturity well and her sensitive capability for offering intensely dramatic introspective characters. Fragility and determination, naiveté and innocence, awareness and disenchantment are the emotional and- personality traits that young Cardinale – provided with charm, allure and a natural, luminous beauty – expresses in this first phase of her long and fortunate career. Extraordinarily photogenic, the actress imposed herself at the beginning of the Sixties as a new female diva model in Italian cinema, working with some of the most important authors of that period, who found a degree of expressiveness that was both sunny and enigmatic in her person, capable of expressing the establishment of a new, signally modern type of woman. The showcase will be inaugurated by the screening of Vento del sud, the only film by Enzo Provenzale (a trusted collaborator of Francesco Rosi), in which Cardinale plays the role of an aristocratic and unhappy Sicilian scion. -

A brilliant neo-western that takes risks aplenty and gets its rewards. Strong performances all round, although particular mention must go to Ben Foster who de- livers a career best. This film also firmly established writer Taylor Sheridan (Sicario, Wind River), as one of the best scriptwriters of his generation. If you are looking for an insight into the new west, look no further than here folks! – Liam UNFORGIVEN (USA 1992) Directed by and starring CLINT! One of my favorite Westerns with my favorite actor. The line “It’s a hell of a thing, killing a man “ensures Eastwood delivers a raw well-constructed western that is a daring and provocative vision of the old west. Great performances also from Gene Hackman and Morgan Freeman. The violence feels remarkably realistic and the extraordinarily thrilling climatic shootout is worth the wait! – Jamie THE GRAND DUEL (Italy 1972) Ex-Sheriff (Lee Van Cleef) tracks down and begrudgingly helps a man framed for murder in this fantastic Spaghetti Western. Opening with a very 'flippy' gunfight and escape, things just get better as these two trade barbs while beinchased across country.
