    ENGEL KÁROLY Hídverők példamutatása „Ha már felragyogott a nap első sugára, vajon meddig fog érni..." — köszön­ tötte Emil Isac a két világháború közötti korszak egyik magyar fordításban megje­ lent román költői antológiáját, amelyet a románok és magyarok között szövődő kap­ csolatok jelentős állomásának tekintett. A szónoki kérdés formájában parafrazált Shakespeare-idézet azonban ma sem vesztett időszerűségéből, mikor a Romániai Magyar Irodalmi Lexikon szerkesztésé­ vel az elmúlt fél évszázad hazai magyar művelődési törekvéseinek minden eddiginél átfogóbb szintézisére készülünk. Az összkép sok jelentős részlete tisztázódott kétség­ telenül már eddig is, de számtalan érdekes momentum vár még felelevenítésre. Mennyire feledésbe ment például azoknak erőfeszítése, akik „a hajnal emberei" módjára, mihelyt a fegyverbe öltözött Európa előtt felderengett a béke remény­ sugára, a gyűlöletbe béklyózott lelkek felszabadításán kezdtek munkálkodni. A testvériség, egyetértés szolgálata kudarcokkal dacoló elszántságot követel, főként egy olyan korban, mint a két világháború közötti időszak, a kizsákmányolásra ala­ pozott társadalmi rendszerek világméretű válságának, az egész emberiséget fenye­ gető katasztrófáknak az évei. Igyekezzünk nyomon követni tehát ennek az Emil Isac idézte sugárnak az útját, melynek ragyogásából román és magyar értelmiségiek próbáltak ismételten a szenvedélyek örvénye fölé a megértés aranyhídját vonni. Az első kezdeményezés Nagyváradról indult ki, ahol Ady Endre és Iosif Vul­ can szellemi hagyatéka eleve kedvező légkört teremtett a kultúrák találkozásának, mégpedig George Bacaloglu ezredes részéről, akit a háború forgataga sodort a Kárpátokon túlról a nyugati határszélre. Ő alapítja meg 1919 novemberében a Hár­ maskörös (Societatea Cele Trei Crişuri) közművelődési egyesületet, amelynek Fehér Körös szakosztálya románok és magyarok egybekapcsolását tűzte ki célul az irodalom, művészet és kultúra eszközeivel. „A háború folyamán csak a rombolás és pusztulás tüneteit láttuk, a fejlődés csak a rombolás technikájának tökéletesítésére szorítko­ zott.

This I say not merely because of the fact that your university is named after one of my favourite philosophers, but because of the respect and partiality that I have for your school. During last year's conference, I witnessed what a vibrant university you have; that you have both serious professors and a serious student body. I observed that you are both open-minded and critical. I observed that you love both to work, and also to play. Last year's conference combined elements of both: the sublime pleasure of academic stimulation mixed with good company and the beauty of one of Transylvania's leading cities.

POSIZIONE ACCADEMICA La Prof.ssa Gisèle VANHESE ha conseguito, presso l’Università di Liegi, la laurea in «Philologie romane» presentando una tesi di Letteratura Francese sotto la direzione del Prof. Maurice Piron (curatore de l’«Histoire de la Langue française» dopo Brunot et Bruneau) e del Prof. Jean-Marie Klinkenberg, membro del Groupe µ di «Retorica generale». In seguito ha conseguito, presso la Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia dell’Università degli Studi di Pisa, la laurea in «Lingue e Letterature Straniere Moderne Indirizzo europeo». È anche in possesso di una laurea in «Communication sociale» rilasciata dall’Università Cattolica di Lovanio. Dopo aver usufruito di una borsa di Perfezionamento presso la Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, dove ha seguito i seminari dei Proff. Contini, Nencioni e Stussi, nel 1984 la Prof.ssa Vanhese ha preso servizio come ricercatore di ruolo confermato per il raggruppamento di Filologia Romanza presso la Classe di Lettere della Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa ed è stata assegnata alla cattedra del Prof. Gianfranco Contini. Successivamente, ha insegnato come Prof. di IIª fascia presso l’Università degli Studi di Cassino e del Lazio Meridionale (1992-1994) ed è diventata Prof. straordinario presso l’Università degli Studi di Trieste (1994-1997). Dal 1997 al 2008, è stata professore ordinario di Letteratura Francese presso la Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia dell’Università della Calabria dove ha tenuto, per supplenza (1999-2018), l’insegnamento di Letterature Comparate e dove ha tenuto, per affidamento (2004-2008), l’insegnamento di Lingua e Letteratura Romena.     European Stages https://europeanstages.org Redesigning Multiculturalism or Japanese Encounters in Sibiu, Romani, The Scarlet Princess, written and directed by Silviu Purc?rete, inspired by Tsuruya Namboku IV’s Sakura Hime Azuma Bunshô The Scarlet Princess is the newest production of Silviu Purc?rete at Radu Stanca National Theatre in Sibiu, Romania. It is the hot winner in three categories of the Romanian theatre awards (UNITER): for best production, best actress in a leading a role (Ofelia Popii for interpreting Seigen and Shinnobu Sota), and best set design (Drago? Buhagiar). As strange as it may seem, these awards come as a national confirmation of the international prestige of a unique cultural phenomenon: the Sibiu International Theatre Festival. Among all the great artists the Festival has brought to Sibiu, Silviu Purc?rete is the Romanian theatre director that has made, without any doubt, the most important contribution to the stunning transformation of the city and to the adaptation of the local venues to the contemporary realities and needs of performing arts. He has done so in close collaboration with the outstanding visionary in cultural and theatre management, as well as great actor, Constantin Chiriac, the general manager of Radu Stanca National Theatre and the president of Sibiu International Theatre Festival (since 1993). Purc?rete has a unique directorial method and style. In the first place, he has a predilection for (pre)texts in the classical area of world literature and theatre. Then, after identifying and extracting a nucleus (or several of them) from a certain work, he conducts a series of improvisations together with the cast that later get polished and fastened into a narrative thread, congruous with the (pre)text itself.

    IACOB MÂRZA (Alba Iulia, Romania) POLITICAL DYNAMISM IN TRANSYLVANIA DURING THE ENLIGHTENMENT: THE CASE OF THE TEACHERS IN BLAJ A careful look at Central and Southeast European society during the Enlight- enment reveals many changes that stemmed from a bevy of factors, the most prominent of which were economic, political, social, religious, and cultural. At the same time, a dynamic Tenewal manifested itself in the political life of the Euro- pean continent by the gradual integration of bourgeois elements into political af- fairs, as well as by changes in the nobility, who still retained important positions in various sectors of public life.' We also see, mutatis mutandis, that society in the - Romanian geopolitical area was engulfed by numerous profound transformations . in the wider context of the Eastern Question and the Turk's Phanariot regime in Moldavia and Wallachia as well as with Habsburg imperial rule in Transylvania. Among these changes were Prince Constantine Mavrocordat's reforms, the reli- gious union of some Transylvanian Romanians with the Church of Rome, the struggle for national emancipation initiated and led by Bishop Inochentie Micu- Klein, the end of the Phanariot domination in the Danubian Principalities, and 2 enlightened absolutism in Transylvania.2 Our attempt to address political dynamism in Transylvania during the Enlight- enment would seem old-fashioned if we ignored the congruence between the Enlightenment and the Romanians' political movement. But, teachers and students in the Blaj schools, that were set up in the autumn of 17543in an epoch corre- sponding to the emergence of the modem world , spread the political aspect of the European and Romanian Enlightenment.

    Finnish Journal for Romanian Studies | No 1 ● 2015 ________________________________________________________________ MYSTERY AND SPACE TRANSLATING THE POETRY OF LUCIAN BLAGA █ Diarmuid Johnson █ The Academy of Modern Celtic Ethnography █ Wales (UK) ABSTRACT The present article describes the process of translation of a selection of the poems of Lucian Blaga into English, and investigates some of the challenges that this task presents the translator. The discussion begins in generic terms, and includes some remarks on the character of the Romanian language, as perceived by the translator, continuing then with a more detailed analysis of lines and verses from sample texts. All texts are quoted from Blaga Opere 1. Poezii (Blaga, 2012a). Other works by Lucian Blaga that contributed to my understanding of his work are included in the bibliography. The stimulus to translate the poetry of Lucian Blaga can be formulated simply as follows: Romanian literature is largely unknown in the English-speaking world. It is an immensely rich tradition, comparable with other great European traditions, German, French, Italian and English. A knowledge of it is desirable to arrive at a more complete understanding of European civilisation and culture. Insight into rural life and into human existence beyond the urban space is particularly rich in Romanian tradition, and a knowledge of the Romanian literary tradition grants us access into a world seldom depicted in other European traditions, this being the world of a people who derive their living from the earth. The sample poems and translations in this article lend themselves to five categories; the monastic world, folk culture and Christianity, the rural space, poems of the night, and ars poetica.

    Silvia Florea Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu Romania Email:[email protected] [email protected] Constantin Oprean Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu Romania Email:[email protected] Abstract: The role of Romanian universities has become crucial in (re)negotiating a new relationship with life-long learners and in bridging the gap of social, age and educational disadvantage. This gap places young graduates at the top of IT skills and life-learners at the bottom of the same scale when both categories attempt to find work. In this way, Romania is a model for the potential of long distance learning in emerging countries, esepcially those of Eastern Europe. Particularly in emerging countries such as Romania, universities are called to respond to ever new challenges; they must bring not only new forms of technology-enabled education to learners of all ages, but they must also make sure these devices reach out and contribute to social cohesion and bonding. This is all the more difficult to achieve as it comes along with a new paradigm in education, characterized by flowing (interchangeable) roles, shared resources, virtual facilities, and asyncronous teaching/ learning processes. In the first part, this paper depicts the status of adult education prior and post fall of communism (1989), and then describes the context in which distance education programs were established. Moreover, it describes, some of the integrated efforts that a young Romanian university (Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu) is making to reach out to all categories of learners, as well as the extent to which we accomplish these goals. The paper argues that, in a learning context, the Internet becomes a tool for innovation, shaping notions such as borders, space, time or mobility.
