IACOB MÂRZA (Alba Iulia, Romania) POLITICAL DYNAMISM IN IACOB MÂRZA (Alba Iulia, Romania) POLITICAL DYNAMISM IN TRANSYLVANIA DURING THE ENLIGHTENMENT: THE CASE OF THE TEACHERS IN BLAJ A careful look at Central and Southeast European society during the Enlight- enment reveals many changes that stemmed from a bevy of factors, the most prominent of which were economic, political, social, religious, and cultural. At the same time, a dynamic Tenewal manifested itself in the political life of the Euro- pean continent by the gradual integration of bourgeois elements into political af- fairs, as well as by changes in the nobility, who still retained important positions in various sectors of public life.' We also see, mutatis mutandis, that society in the - Romanian geopolitical area was engulfed by numerous profound transformations . in the wider context of the Eastern Question and the Turk's Phanariot regime in Moldavia and Wallachia as well as with Habsburg imperial rule in Transylvania. Among these changes were Prince Constantine Mavrocordat's reforms, the reli- gious union of some Transylvanian Romanians with the Church of Rome, the struggle for national emancipation initiated and led by Bishop Inochentie Micu- Klein, the end of the Phanariot domination in the Danubian Principalities, and 2 enlightened absolutism in Transylvania.2 Our attempt to address political dynamism in Transylvania during the Enlight- enment would seem old-fashioned if we ignored the congruence between the Enlightenment and the Romanians' political movement. But, teachers and students in the Blaj schools, that were set up in the autumn of 17543in an epoch corre- sponding to the emergence of the modem world , spread the political aspect of the European and Romanian Enlightenment. 1. PompiliuTeodor, Interferenfe iluministe europene (Cluj-Napoca: "Dacia," 1984), p. 202. 22 When we discuss the political dynamism of Romanian intellectuals personified by the schoolteachers in Blaj during the Enlightenment, we must emphasize at the outset that they effectively participated in major political and social events and thereby left their mark on Transylvania's history. In fact, only if we look into the teachers' political dynamism may we fully appreciate the actual contribution made by Blaj's "fountains of gifts," that is, its sources of learning and knowledge for shaping Transylvania's intelligentsia during the Romanian national renaissance. Then, some of the teachers and students who had been active in Blaj until the third decade of the nineteenth century found their place in a gallery of the creators of Transylvania's Romanian culture, enabling by their deeds the generation educated in "Vormarz" to prepare ideologically and organizationally for the revolution of 1848-1849.? These learned men were continuators - on other levels and in different his- torical circumstances - of Inochentie Micu-Klein, the promoter of Transylvanian Romanians' struggle for political and national rights in the eighteenth century.6 As the initiator of far-reaching efforts to emancipate the Romanian peoples, he was also the schools' founder. Micu-Klein played a decisive role in the crystallization of the $coala Ardeleana [Transylvanian school]'s political ideology. The basic political, social,, and cultural desiderate, for which the brave bishop had fought, would also be present during the second half of the eighteenth century as well as at the beginning of the nineteenth in "Vormarz" and even in the program drafted by Transylvania's political leaders and revolutionaries. Among them were many intellectuals from Blaj. In fact, their involvement in a series of political, social, cultural, and religious activities must be mentioned before the schools' opening, which occurred when they also had other roles in the public life of the Great Prin- cipality of Transylvania. A concrete case is that of the abbot Leonte Moschonas, later one of the first teachers in Blaj, who participated in the organizational meeting of rectors in Daia of Alba county on September 22, 1747. The assembly, in which the ideas of the Transylvanian Romanians' Romanity and continuity was reaffirmed, represents as well the adhesion of Uniate clerical leaders to the political dynamism evident in Micu-Klein's Roman exile? A year later, in 1748, on the occasion of the Sibiu synod, when the Union's uncertain future was discussed in the presence of the Carpatho-Russian bishop, Mihail Olsavszky, some of Blaj's students and future teachers also participated. Location and history Alba is a Romanian county located in Transylvania, its capital city being Alba-Iulia. The Apuseni Mountains are in its northwestern part, while the south is dominated by the northeastern side of the Parang Mountains. In the east of the county is located the Transylvanian plateau with deep but wide valleys. The main river is Mures. The current capital city of the county has a long history. Apulensis (today Alba-Iulia) was capital of Roman Dacia and the seat of a Roman legion - Gemina.

    BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ROMANIAN PEOPLE Romania has its unique culture, which is the product of its geography and of its distinct historical evolution. Like Romanians themselves, it is fundamentally defined as the meeting point of three regions: Central Europe, Eastern Europe, and the Balkans, but cannot be truly included in any of them. The Romanian identity formed on a substratum of mixed Roman and quite possibly Dacian elements, with many other influences. During late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, the major influences came from the Slavic peoples who migrated and settled in near Romania; from medieval Greeks, and the Byzantine Empire; from a long domination by the Ottoman Empire; from the Hungarians; and from the Germans living in Transylvania. Modern Romanian culture emerged and developed over roughly the last 250 years under a strong influence from Western culture, particularly French , and German culture. The Romanian literature began to truly evolve with the revolutions of 1848 and the union of the two Danubian Principalities in 1859. The Origin of the Romanians began to be discussed and in Transylvania and Romanian scholars began studying in France, Italy and Germany. The German philosophy and French culture were integrated into modern Romanian literature and a new elite of artists led to the appearance of some of the classics of the Romanian literature such as Mihai Eminescu, George Coşbuc, Ioan Slavici. Although they remain little known outside Romania, they are very appreciated within Romania for giving birth to a true Romanian literature by creating modern lyrics with inspiration from the old folklore tales. Of them, Eminescu is considered the most important and influential Romanian poet, and is still very much loved for his creations, and especially the poem Luceafărul – The Evening Star – the longest love poem in the world.

    DANIEL DUMITRAN, Jewish Cemeteries of Romania: Alba Iulia Case Study Abstract: Places of memory and also holders of significant historical information, Jewish cemeteries were in Romania insufficiently subject to recovery efforts. The dramatic decline in Jewish communities led to the cessation of the use of several cemeteries and to severe deteriorations of funerary monuments. According to statistics from 2007, of the 810 registered cemeteries, over 750 were in places where Jews no longer existed. In the last decade a general inventory has been made and the risk factors for the preservation of gravestones have been indicated. However, concrete interventions for research and preservation of cemeteries have been delayed. In these circumstances, the question is whether their meanings (sacred places, places of memory, vestiges of the past) have been preserved for the non-Jewish communities, or whether they are doomed to oblivion, like the communities they served. My paper tries to answer this question, based on the results of an ongoing project, regarding the inventory and description of gravestones existing in the Jewish cemeteries of Alba County. The only city in Transylvania where Jews had the right of settlement from the seventeenth century, Alba Iulia hosted a large community of Jews, originally Sephardic, and later majority Ashkenazi. The cemetery, with continuing function attested from the mid eighteenth century, reflects the combination of strictly observed tradition and tendency towards integration into the host community, in the last quarter of the nineteenth century, when Jews acquired civil emancipation. The few monumental crypts belonging to rich families illustrate their full integration in the host Hungarian community.

Examinations are based on the so-called şikâyet defteris, imperial registers archiving decrees issued in response to petitions of sub- jects by the Ottoman Imperial Council. Since this corpus gives insight into the social and institutional links between the Ottoman administration and its exponents, it proved to be a significant source for a more nuanced understanding of the nature of relations between the Porte and the Danubian vassal states and of the specific status of voievods involved in the Ottoman administration. This study focuses on some characteristics of the relations between the Ottoman central administration and the principalities of Wallachia and Moldavia in the second half of the 17th century as articulated in the imperial system of petitioning process. A szónoki kérdés formájában parafrazált Shakespeare-idézet azonban ma sem vesztett időszerűségéből, mikor a Romániai Magyar Irodalmi Lexikon szerkesztésé­ vel az elmúlt fél évszázad hazai magyar művelődési törekvéseinek minden eddiginél átfogóbb szintézisére készülünk. Az összkép sok jelentős részlete tisztázódott kétség­ telenül már eddig is, de számtalan érdekes momentum vár még felelevenítésre. Mennyire feledésbe ment például azoknak erőfeszítése, akik „a hajnal emberei" módjára, mihelyt a fegyverbe öltözött Európa előtt felderengett a béke remény­ sugára, a gyűlöletbe béklyózott lelkek felszabadításán kezdtek munkálkodni. Igyekezzünk nyomon követni tehát ennek az Emil Isac idézte sugárnak az útját, melynek ragyogásából román és magyar értelmiségiek próbáltak ismételten a szenvedélyek örvénye fölé a megértés aranyhídját vonni. Az első kezdeményezés Nagyváradról indult ki, ahol Ady Endre és Iosif Vul­ can szellemi hagyatéka eleve kedvező légkört teremtett a kultúrák találkozásának, mégpedig George Bacaloglu ezredes részéről, akit a háború forgataga sodort a Kárpátokon túlról a nyugati határszélre. Dumitru Cazac Abstract The Great Union of 1918 has represented a fundamental step in the foundation of the contemporary Romanian state, whereas for Bessarabia it was a chance to retake its direction of evolution towards the west. Unfortunately, the history has separated it once again in 1944, in order to become an independent state named the Republic of Moldova, after a soviet era. Unionist tendencies were registered on both sides of the Prut river ever since 1991, and have augmented in the last years due to the worsening economic situation. This paper aims to make a legal analysis on a possible unification of the Republic of Moldova with Romania, taking into account, particularly, the EU member statute of Romania and the existence of a separatist region – Transnistria, as well as an autonomous territorial unit – Gagauzia, on the territory of the Republic of Moldova. The place where the Romanian nation has appeared has always been at the crossroads of interests between the eastern and western nations and represented the key or the gate that separated Europe from Asia. From ancient times, the nomadic tribes went through this space onto their way to Europe, while in medieval ages, this territory was considered a „gatekeeper of Christendom”. Thus, the geographical position of the birthplace of the Romanian nation was a priori a less favourable for the existence of a strong and independent state.
