These lyrics present an interesting paradox – a man who longed for his music to be accepted by the American public, yet remained indifferent to the social mores of the time. Porter offered trenchant social commentary aimed at a society restricted by social taboos and cultural conventions. The argument develops systematically through a chronological and contextual study of the influences of people and events on a man and his music. The prosodic intonation and imagistic texture of the lyrics demonstrate an intimate correlation between personality and composition which, in turn, is supported by the biographical content.     Idioms and Expressions by David Holmes A method for learning and remembering idioms and expressions I wrote this model as a teaching device during the time I was working in Bangkok, Thai- land, as a legal editor and language consultant, with one of the Big Four Legal and Tax companies, KPMG (during my afternoon job) after teaching at the university. When I had no legal documents to edit and no individual advising to do (which was quite frequently) I would sit at my desk, (like some old character out of a Charles Dickens’ novel) and prepare language materials to be used for helping professionals who had learned English as a second language—for even up to fifteen years in school—but who were still unable to follow a movie in English, understand the World News on TV, or converse in a colloquial style, because they’d never had a chance to hear and learn com- mon, everyday expressions such as, “It’s a done deal!” or “Drop whatever you’re doing.” Because misunderstandings of such idioms and expressions frequently caused miscom- munication between our management teams and foreign clients, I was asked to try to as- sist. I am happy to be able to share the materials that follow, such as they are, in the hope that they may be of some use and benefit to others. The simple teaching device I used was three-fold: 1. Make a note of an idiom/expression 2. Define and explain it in understandable words (including synonyms.) 3. Give at least three sample sentences to illustrate how the expression is used in context.

    Abstract Balance By Eva Snyder B.A. Music and Computer Science Mount Holyoke College Balance, a three-song extended play album, was recorded in Nashville, ​ Tennessee in March of 2017 and debuted during an evening length senior recital on April 15th, 2017 at Mount Holyoke College. This paper details the processes of networking, marketing, and recording I have undertaken to produce my first professional album in the country music genre. Throughout this year, I have explored entrepreneurship in a new light and seen firsthand the issues that come along with the music industry. Using strong networking skills that I have developed, I have crafted my own solutions to said roadblocks. I have utilized new apps to quickly grow a supportive fanbase and interviewed fellow artists of differing levels of success searching for advice. In addition, I have emailed, phoned and met face-to-face with industry professionals as well as produced three radio-quality original songs while working seamlessly with highly accredited engineers in Nashville. Reflecting upon this year-long adventure will provide me with useful insights as to what worked and what did not work in regards toward advancing my professional music career. James Gavin in his article INSIDE SLUG’S SALOON, JAZZ’S MOST NOTORIOUS NIGHT CLUB describes the neighbor hood. “ In the 1960s, New York’s East Village was a hodgepodge of Lower East Side multi-ethnicity-Ukrainians, Poles, Puerto Ricans, Jews and a burgeoning Bohemia of coffeehouses, experimental theatre and artists. Poverty and rampant drug action formed the . “The neighborhood had a beat to it that went on 24 hours,” says Charles Biada, then a young police officer at the nearby Ninth Precinct. “Somehow everyone seemed to interrelate.” Then night fell, and the unlit streets vibrated with danger. Dealers skulked in doorways; muggings were common. But that didn’t stop musicians and their fans from trekking into scary Alphabet City, east of First Avenue, to visit a club that lured the bravest renegades in jazz. Taxi drivers avoided the area, and the nearest subway stop was blocks away; those who lacked a car walked briskly. Along the way they passed squalid tenements, a men’s homeless shelter and the clubhouse of the Hells Angels, with a row of Harley- Davidsons outside.

But recently, that has begun to change. Urban downtowns are reviving, and new towns are being built to traditional patterns. Not only can streetcars serve these non- suburban areas, they need streetcars in order to flourish. Streetcars – which we define as rail transit vehicles designed for local transportation, powered by electricity received from an overhead wire – differ from both buses and Light Rail. Streetcars can be modern, Vintage (antique) or Heritage (reproduction) vehicles. All around the country, cities are building new streetcar lines. The most successful are tied in closely w i t h the local transit system. Construction costs for streetcar lines vary widely, although operating costs are almost always l o w.

    Village Life Goes On... Along Old York Road YWALKING TOUR Y Village Life Goes On Along Old York Road Self-guided historic walking tour of Waverly Village’s Commercial Corridor was produced in August 2010 by Better Waverly Community Organization, Abell Improvement Association and Waverly Main Street with a grant from Baltimore Community Foundation. Long before there was a “Greenmount Avenue” or “York Road Turnpike” - indeed before Captain John Smith sailed up Chesapeake Bay to find the Patapsco River and before European settlers colonized Maryland - Piscataway and Susquehannock tribes beat down a path along this route to hunt and trade. In 1688 England’s Lord Baltimore granted estates in this area known as Huntingdon and Merryman and in 1736 a settler named Thomas Gorsuch built a house here, calling it Homestead. York Road Turnpike followed a wooded highpoint known as “Britain’s Ridge” where water drained into Jones Falls on the west and Herring Run on the east. The turnpike was linked to Falls Road Turnpike on the south at Vineyard Lane and on the north at Merryman Lane, now University Parkway, except for a block behind the present day Waverly Farmers Market. The York Road connected with Baltimore & Harford Turnpike at Quaker Lane, now Loch Raven Road. Society of Friends members used to ride to town stopping near 30th Street at a Quaker Lot to board and feed their horses for free. Settlement of Quakers led to this area being called Friendship. Revolutions in transportation led to removal of toll gates along the road in 1894. The Turnpike had been straightened out into Old and New York Roads.
