He was revered as a great mathematician and physicist, an inventor, and the greatest prose stylist in the French language. He was a defender of religious freedom and an apologist of the Christian faith. He was born June 19, 1623, at Clermont, the capital of Auvergne, which was a small town of about nine thousand inhabitants. He was born to Etienne and Antoinette Pascal.
