OPV Middle East was founded in 2012 by a collaboration of IQPC, the world’s leading defence conference organiser (by volume and attendees), Defence IQ, a leading defence sector online news resource with over 80,000 subscribers, and the former Chief of Naval Forces of the UAE, His Excellency Rear Admiral Ahmed Al Sabab Al Teneiji. Immediately, the event became a significant success and filled a much needed niche in the Middle East; hitherto the maritime security sector had been amply serviced with massive exhibitions, which serve a certain purpose but are not conducive to learning or at giving the strength of business opportunity a conference can provide. Therefore, Chiefs of Navy and flag officers descending on one venue to meet with each other, and a handful of select companies achieving concentrated networking experiences with them, was an instant success formula which OPV Middle East adopted and has served the maritime security with it ever since. Key themes of the conference The conference brings together the key decision makers and operators from as wide a variety of Middle Eastern and North African countries and regional maritime security forces as possible. The motivation behind this is to engender cooperation, share best practice for overcoming the changing operational landscape and to investigate new technologies which are currently, or are set to, change the face of maritime security operations. The upcoming conference will address all the following major themes:  How security forces need to adapt to the Daesh’s asymmetric approach to maritime terrorism  Methods of interdiction and successful arrest of smugglers of illegal items and narcotics  Improving situational awareness and target acquisition with new battle management suite systems  Increasing lethality with the acquisition of better targeting systems and more accurate naval weapons  Achieving the right mix of fast craft, helicopters, UASs and RHIBs for future interdiction missions  Enhancing situational awareness through the attainment of better maritime and coastal surveillance  Common maritime policing operations, including illegal fishing, polluting, smuggling and piracy and success stories from the region on how to surmount them
