Anthony Millerick : First Team Manager ‘Millers’ is now in his fifth season with the Row. He has guided us to two league titles, two promotions taking us from step 5 to step 3, a Hampshire Senior Cup Semi-Final, and lifting the Aldershot Senior Cup. Tactically astute and, whilst he can be uncompromising, he has a way with his players that engenders loyalty.

Steve Noakes : Assistant Manager Steve became Millers’ number 2 at the end of Septem- ber 2019, having joined the Row as an experienced player ahead of the 2014/15 season, taking on the captaincy. His presence on the pitch, as well as his ability on the ball, helped guide us from the Combined Counties League to the Southern League.

Neil Woodyer : First Team Coach Neil joins us this season, well known to Millers from Neil’s time as assistant manager at Camberley some 10 years ago. Strong in his opinion yet very willing to hear another point of view, Woody’s approachable manner makes him a real asset.

Sam Rafique : First Team Coach Sam holds a UEFA License and is also currently an academy coach with Aldershot Town FC. Into his second season with us, he’s had spells at Fleet Town, Godalming Town & Camberley Town. Affable and very approachable, Sam works incredibly hard for the Club.

Keith Benjamin : Goalkeeping Coach An experienced goalkeeping coach in his second season with us, Keith brings us a wealth of experience and provides specialist goalkeeper mentoring and coaching to our group of talented ‘keepers.

Mark Hurst : First Team Coach One of the highest regarded football coaches locally, Mark has worked as a coaches' coach at both Fulham and Villareal FC. His experience and approach to helping players achieve their best is hugely beneficial.

Mark Povey : Sports Therapist Mark joined us this season from Wealdstone FC. He comes to us with a wealth of experience in the game, and with fresh ideas and techniques regarding physiotherapy, fitness and general well-being which have already benefited the players.

32 INTRODUCING HARTLEY SUNDAY

Welcome to Hartley Sunday - a previously little known group of lads who are currently making a name for themselves in the Basingstoke and District Sunday Football League!

How did they come to be a part of Hartley Wintney FC? They were musing amongst themselves about playing football in a league, but most worked on Saturdays, so Sunday was their only option. A couple of them had played for Hartley some 7 or 8 years ago in our Youth Team under Paul Dale, and current joint Manager, Billy Mullen, is the Chairman's son, but most are friends from school days.

They approached the Chairman about starting a team, and the deal struck was that Hartley Wintney FC would loan them an old kit, but they would pay their way from there. What most people do not realise is that it costs circa £1000 to start a team before a ball is even kicked!

Fair play to the lads, they gained a small grant from Hampshire FA to help to- wards affiliation and cup entry fees, and found the rest of the money them- selves. With that all in place, Hartley Sunday was resurrected. They play in Div 3 along with a number of newly formed teams, which is fantastic given that grass- roots 11-a-side is failing throughout the country. They currently sit top of the table as I’m writing this, having secured a 100% start from the 6 league games and scoring 54 goals in the process.

They are currently in the Hampshire Sunday Vase cup, having overcome AFC Prospect Farm in a 5-1 game in Havant, and The Bakers Arms with a 12-1 win. Closest league rivals this season look to be NW2020, also a new team this sea- son and one that has a few familiar Hartley faces in its squad (not the same if you're not in orange, Lacey!).

34 CLUB NEWS - LES SACKEY SIGNS

Les Sackey Joins the Row

Eagle-eyed readers of the Twitter feed from the Poole FA Trophy game will have noticed the late introduction off the bench of Leslie Sackey for his debut in Row colours. The former Scunthorpe United player joined Isthmian League Marlow in February 2018 after being released by the SkyBet League One side. Les, who will be 21 at the end of this month (November) is a relatively local lad, having arrived at Scunthorpe from Reading's category one academy youth system before completing his two-year scholarship with United, which included a number of standout performances for their Under 18 side.

He landed a professional contract in May 2017, during which he had loan spells with Basingstoke Town and JOSIE SHIPMAN PHOTO: Sheffield FC in Northern Premier Di- vision 1 South. He left Marlow at the conclusion of the 2018/19 season.

While better known more recently as a left-sided midfielder, Les is certain- ly versatile, having set out on his footballing career as a forward but was taken on and coached as a de- fender when he joined Scunthorpe, becoming comfortable at either full- back or centre-back.

The Club is delighted to welcome Les to the first team squad. We look for- ward to him settling in and enjoying his football with us.

MEMORIES ARE MADE OF THIS

Memorable moments from our past - Part One There have been many great times for the Row over the years, but I have to start this series with my personal best of all, away to Clevedon Town in the FA Cup 3rd Qualifying Round replay, season 2013/14.

14th Oct 2013. We’d drawn 1-1 on the Saturday and just two days later we found ourselves faced with a Monday evening trek to North Somerset. The first half was a disaster. We got it all wrong and Clevedon carved us open time after time. Ben Dillon was manager and I was praying Ben would make a change be- fore it was too late. Clevedon hammered an early penalty against Craig Atkin- son’s post, and Craig pulled off save after save to keep us in it, but Ross McNab's goal and a Matt Thorne penalty put Clevedon well in control.

At 2 down you’d normally think you were still in with a chance, but few of us thought that at half-time.

A change did come at half-time and a reshuffle as we go 4-3-3, with Elliot Hob- den coming on in centre midfield, replacing Jason Minton. Clevedon score - but the flag is up for offside. Then these are the words of the Gazette’s John Boy- man, there reporting live on the game: “That's a fantastic strike from substitute ELLIOT HOBDEN, who picks up the ball 35 yards from goal when a corner is half-cleared and fires a looping volley into the top corner. Game on!”

Hope... we thought, except only minutes later the hosts went down the other end and restored their 2 goal advantage. Dismay, but just a minute later… “Hartley find an immediate response, ELLIOT HOBDEN sending an excellent low shot in off the far post from the edge of the area.” 3-2.

We clear the ball off our line. Ben Dillon sends himself on. 70 minutes on the clock and the Clevedon centre back inexplicably has his arm raised and the ball finds it - penalty! SAM ARGENT buries it! 3-3.

Then we score another… “Tom Walsh sends a free-kick forward from the half- way line and the bounce catches the home goalkeeper out, the ball going in…. the free-kick was indirect... Hartley are adamant that the 'keeper got a touch,

V CLEVEDON TOWN, FA CUP 2013/14 but the assistant has the goal disallowed.” He did get a touch Ref. He really did!

Ross McNab gets through one-on-one with Craig Atkinson - this is it, all over… no! Craig pulls off another incredible stop, sending the ball over the bar.

We’re 6 minutes into injury time, extra time looming. The rest I remember so well. The ball is played in from the right. Arge collects, takes it to his left, cen- trally and just inside the area, the centre back commits and Sam makes sure his trailing leg is out behind him. Here’s how John reported it:

“Sam Argent goes down under a challenge from Sam Teale in the area. The home defender seemed to get the ball but the referee points to the penalty spot. High drama.”

SAM ARGENT buries his second penalty of the night. 4-3 Hartley. They kick-off. The whistle blows. Clevedon players incensed, a red card is shown. John sums it up: “An incredible game ends in dramatic style, Hartley snatching the win in the final seconds. They are through to the fourth qualifying round for the first time in their history.”

After a lovely chat with Bobby Gould - I think Bobby lived nearby - we went down to the clubhouse bar and all I remember then are the huge ‘Cheshire cat’ grins on the faces of our players as they came into the bar. I’m with Stuart Ur- quhart’s dad, the two of us down- ing large brandies. It just doesn’t get any better than that! [KOB]
