    Jerome S. Fanciulli Collection History of Aviation Collection Provenance Jerome S. Fanciulli was born in New York City, January 12, 1988. He was the son of Professor Francesco and Amanda Fanciulli. He was educated at de Witt Clinton High School in New York City. He attended St. Louis University, St. Louis, 1903-04 and Stevens Institute, Hoboken, N.J., 1904-05. He married Marian Callaghan in November, 1909. On January 12, 1986 he died in Winchester Hospital in Winchester, Virginia. Mr. Fanciulli worked for the Washington Post and then joined the Associated Press where his assignments were on the Capitol staff of the Associated Press. He became the AP’s aviation specialist. Mr. Fanciulli was a charter member of the National Press Club and a founding member of the Aero Club of Washington, D.C. In November 19098, Mr. Fanciulli joined Glenn H. Curtiss’ company. He was Vice President and General Manger of the Curtiss Exhibition Company. Among his many varied duties Mr. Fanciulli established schools of aviation and directed the demonstration and sale of Curtiss aeroplanes in the United States and Europe. He promoted or conducted some of the largest air meets in the United States prior to 1913. He collaborated with the United States Army and the United States Navy in developing aeroplane specifications. Mr. Fanciulli wrote magazine articles, employed and directed aviators obtaining contracts for them. Mr. Fanciulli sold the United States Navy its first biplane and the United States Army its second biplane. He also sold czarist Russia its first plane for their Navy. Mr. Fanciulli left the Glenn H.

Technical men who are far enough from the work to see it in a different perspective, therefore, have a special opportunity for useful service.

    Wilbur & OrvilleWright Pictorial Materials Preface This guide is the fifth commemorative tribute to the Wright brothers prepared by the Library of Congress since 1949, when the Wright papers were given to the Library by the Orville Wright estate, and is one of two publications originating in con­ nection with the seventy-fifth anniversary of powered flight. Its companion, entitled Photographs by the Wright Brothers: Prints from the Glass Negatives in the Library of Congress (Washing­ ton: Library of Congress, 1978), includes all hut two of 303 pho­ tographic glass-plate negatives taken by the Wright brothers in highly reduced form as positive images on five microfiche. The publication was prepared for the press by Leonard C. Bruno. Twenty-five years earlier, to celebrate the fiftieth anni­ versary of powered flight, a two-volume edition of The Papers of Wilbur and Orville Wright, Including the Chanute- Wright Let­ ters and Other Papers of Octave Chanute (New York: McGraw­ McGraw-Hill Book Company, 1953) was published under the sponsorship of Oberlin College. In that major initial tribute, the Wrights’ letters, diaries, notebooks, and other records of their scientific and technical work in inventing and perfecting the air­ plane were edited by Marvin W. McFarland of what was then the Library’s Aeronautics Division. As a contributor to that work, the present writer com­ piled several auxiliary files to supplement and help in organizing the wealth of material in the Wright papers. Bustleton Field was the midpoint stop on the New York–Washington, D.C., airmail route. During the first three months of airmail service, Army pilots flew the mail. Courtesy National Archives and Records Administration On May 15, 1918, the Post Office Department began airmail service between New York and Washington, D.C., via Philadelphia — the nation’s first regularly scheduled airmail route. Initially, Army pilots flew the mail. On August 12, 1918, the Department took over all phases of airmail service, using newly hired civilian pilots. In 1919, airmail routes linked New York and Chicago; in 1920, a transcontinental airmail route was completed, linking New York with San Francisco. In the early years, pilots flew in open cockpits in unpredictable weather. According to one veteran airmail pilot, there was a fifty-fifty chance of engine failure on any given flight.1 Airmail service was a working laboratory — wind, rain, ice, snow, and extreme temperatures revealed weaknesses and flaws in airplane design and maintenance. Through trial and error, designs were improved and failures corrected. The Department’s purpose in developing airmail service was in part “to demonstrate to men of means” that commercial aviation was “a possibility.”2 The demonstration succeeded. Private companies began flying mail under contract in February 1926, and by September 1927 all airmail was carried under contract. Background Members of Alexander Graham Bell’s Aerial Experiment The Vertical Flight Society — founded in 1943 as the American Association were already busy with their first airplane, the Red Helicopter Society — is the world’s oldest and largest society Wing, but Curtiss had offered the use of his V-8 engine to Williams dedicated to advancing vertical flight technology.
