Field Diary Birgunj ICD: Nepal’s Largest Dry Port Sugam Bajracharya Research Fellow, Nepal Economic Forum About the Field Visit In collaboration with CUTS International, Nepal Economic Forum (NEF) conducted a field survey under the study ‘Enabling a Political-Economy Discourse for Multimodal Connectivity in the BBIN Sub-region.’ As a result, a team of enumerators from NEF visited the Birgunj Inland Clearance Depot (ICD), the Birgunj Integrated Check Point (ICP), and the surrounding city of Birgunj in December 2020. The objective of the visit was to make a ground-level assessment of the current scenario of the developments in port infrastructure, trade logistics, and the surrounding infrastructure that might play a pivotal role in the multimodal connectivity of Nepal and the BBIN sub-region. The visit also intended to hold stakeholder consultations to get a view of challenges in daily trade operations. Connectivity to Birgunj ICD and ICP The Birgunj ICD is located in the Parsa district of Province 2. The nearest city, Birgunj, is at a distance of 8 km from the dry port, and the nearest Simara airport is 23.4 km away. The ICP is located right next to the ICD at the Nepal-India border. The city of Birgunj is about 140 km south of Kathmandu and takes about four and a half hours to reach via the Kulekhani-Hetauda route. However, large vehicles like buses and trucks are only allowed to travel the Kathmandu-Birgunj route via the Prithvi Highway, which is about 300 km and takes approximately 8-10 hours. Therefore, a 15-minute direct flight from the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu to Simara Airport is the fastest option available to travel to Birgunj.

Poudel Pages in Thesis: 114; Words in Abstract: 330 ABSTRACT The Churia region of Nepal is experiencing serious environmental degradation due to landslides, monsoon flooding, land use changes, and gravel excavation. The objectives of this study were to quantify the temporal change of landslides as related to changes in land use/deforestation/urbanization, to quantify the temporal change and extent of river inundation in the Terai, to quantify the extent to which stone quarrying exacerbates the degradation process, and to generate a landslide hazard risk map. Gravel extraction and precipitation data, along with field work and geospatial methods, were used to map degradation by focusing on the centrally located districts of Bara, Rautahat, and Makwanpur.

Manager Subash Khadka, Dy. Manager Subash Deuja,Sr. Officer Om Thapa 0 Mr. Pavan KumarGautam, being the master of ceremony, commenced the program with a welcome note and alsorequested the participants to switch off their cell phones. Distinguished guests were welcomed with “khada or shawl” by the FOD and Chief ATC. 1.1 At 11:45AM, FOD TIACAO Mr. Sudhir Kumar Choudharywas requested to deliver a welcome speech and highlight the needs for interaction among ATS personnel working at different aerodromes of the country. According to him, this annual program was characterized by dichotomy in structure; one being ATC-ATC interaction and the other being ATC-pilot interaction to be held on the 27th of Jestha. He believed regular interaction between concerned stakeholders, especially among ATCs and pilots, was instrumental in figuring out the deficiencies on prevalent ATS systems and hence, in introduction of suitable and effective improvement measures. FOD Mr. Choudhary laid down the three main objectives of the program as mentioned below: a) To pave a way towards effective implementation of ICAO’s standards and recommended practices (SARPS) in Nepalese ATS system. b) To address various coordination issues between Kathmandu area control center and other domestic aerodromes to make the Nepalese sky safer and more efficient; including coordination enhancement among different ATS units operating in Kathmandu airport.

  • Assessment of Economic Viability of Wind Energy in Nepal: a Case Study of Ten Sites
Proceedings of IOE Graduate Conference, 2015 pp. 169–179 Assessment of Economic Viability of Wind Energy in Nepal: A Case Study of Ten Sites Raju Laudari1*, Bal Krishna Sapkota 2, Kamal Banskota3 1,2 Department of Science and Humanities, Pulchowk Cmpus, Institute of Engineering, Tribhuvan University, Nepal 3 Visiting Faculty, School of Arts, Kathmandu University and Tribhuvan University, Nepal *Corresponding Author: [email protected] Abstract This research assessed wind resource potential at ten sample sites using twelve months data measured in an hourly basis at site and analyzing recent global wind atlas dataset based on one kilometer resolution. Pertinent literatures on wind resources potential and its economic viability were reviewed with focus on the background, methodology and findings of those literatures. The wind speed data were received from different meteorological stations representing the sites under consideration. On the economic front, net present value cost and net cash flow were calculated by performing the life cycle cost analysis of each site considering 20 kW wind turbine. The average wind speed in sample sites ranges from 0.5m/s to 4m/s; the lowest wind speed recorded in Nepalgunj airport and the highest in Jumla airport. The result shows that Jumla airport has the highest wind resource potential followed by Patan Baitadi, Chainpur Bajhang, Thankot Kathmandu, Simikot airport and Biratnagar airport. The economic analysis resulted with negative net cash flow and net present value for all sites, therefore sensitivity analysis was conducted for four major parameters; investment costs, electricity production, subsidy- loan mix and tariff rate. Both net present value and net cash flow remained negative even after sensitivity analysis in five sites namely Kathmandu airport, Nepaljung airport, Pokhara airport, Simara airport and Simikot airport.
