Document continues. Exercising Freedom: Encounters with Art, Artists and Communities 6 October – 21 March 2021 Gallery 4 Exercising Freedom: Encounters with Art, Artists and Communities this exhibition looks at the development of the community and education programme at the Whitechapel Gallery from 1979 to 1989. It presents rarely seen records from the Gallery’s archives which have not been widely researched to date. Walking through the doors of Whitechapel Art Gallery in the late 1970s, visitors could explore the wealth of arts from Bengal or immerse themselves in the abstract sculptures of American artist Eva Hesse. Facilitating these journeys was the Gallery’s pioneering Community Education Organiser Jenni Lomax, who developed a new approach to art and education and later became Director of Camden Art Centre. Document continues. For over a decade Lomax engaged young artists who often lived and worked in the area – including Zarina Bhimji, Sonia Boyce, Maria Chevska, Jocelyn Clarke, Fran Cottell, Sacha Craddock, Jeffrey Dennis, Charlie Hooker, Jefford Horrigan, Janis Jefferies, Rob Kesseler, Deborah Law, Bruce McLean, Stephen Nelson, Veronica Ryan, Allan de Souza, Jo Stockham – to act as creative mediators between the Gallery and East End communities, by forging partnerships with teachers, schools and local organisations.

  • HISTORIC LIBRARIES FORUM BULLETIN NO. 24 February 2013
HISTORIC LIBRARIES FORUM BULLETIN NO. 24 February 2013 It is a relief to report, after the bad news of libraries in danger in the previous bulletin and at our AGM in November, some good news. The Women’s Library has been found a safe home in the library of the London School of Economics, where it will continue to be available for use by both researchers and the general public, with its own dedicated space for exhibitions and teaching. Further details are on the LSE’s website: http://www2.lse.ac.uk/library/newsandinformation/newsArchive/2012/Womens- Library.aspx I reported at the AGM that rare books belonging to Wigan Public Library were sold off in October 2012, despite publicity in the local press and offers of advice from us. I helped a journalist from the Wigan Evening Post with some details of the books for sale. As a result of this sale we produced some guidance for public libraries with rare book collections, which was published on the Voices for the Library blog in November, hopefully to help public libraries before they get as far as selling off the books. The blog post can be seen here: http://www.voicesforthelibrary.org.uk/wordpress/?p=2703 As always, do continue to let us know of any libraries you hear of which may be in danger. We can only help to spread the word and help save the collections if we know about them! Both September’s provenance workshop and the annual meeting in November were over- subscribed and received excellent feedback from participants.

  • Tailored Trades: Clothes, Labour and Professional Communities (1880 Communities Professional and Labour Clothes, Trades: Tailored 1939)
Tailored Trades: Jack London, Turn-of-the-Century Slum Tourism and the Sweated Industries of the East End Speaker: Dr Vike Martina Plock Thursday 22 May 2014 | 7.30pm This talk will focus on the popularity of slum tourism at the turn of the 20th century. In particular, it will look at the ways in which the sweated industries are represented in literary texts by Jack London and other writers from the same period. It will also discuss how middle-class authors and philanthropists “dressed down” to blend in with the East End residents to explore in detail “how the other half lives.” Dr Vike Martina Plock is Senior Lecturer in English Literature at the University of Exeter. She grew up in Germany but received her MA and PhD from the University of York. Her research focuses on early 20th century literature and culture. She is particularly interested in the relationship between literature and medicine and has written a monograph on the Irish writer James Joyce and his lifelong engagement with the medical sciences. It was published in 2010 by the University Press of Florida as Joyce, Medicine, and Modernity. In addition to numerous articles and book chapters on modernist literature, she is now completing a second book on interwar women novelists and fashion. This recent academic interest in clothes, fashion, and appearance has brought her to the current research project "Tailored Trades" on the interrelated histories of work and clothes at the turn of the 20th century. Tailored Trades: Clothes, Labour and Professional Communities (1880-1939) Organised jointly by researchers at the University of Exeter and Northumbria University, and partnered by the Bishopsgate Institute, this Research Network investigates how clothes and labour influenced and assisted in the development of professional communities at the turn of the 20th century (1880-1939).

  • Bibliography Sources for Further Reading May 2011 National Trust Bibliography
Bibliography Sources for further reading May 2011 National Trust Bibliography Introduction Over many years a great deal has been published about the properties and collections in the care of the National Trust, yet to date no single record of those publications has been established. The following Bibliography is a first attempt to do just that, and provides a starting point for those who want to learn more about the properties and collections in the National Trust’s care. Inevitably this list will have gaps in it. Do please let us know of additional material that you feel might be included, or where you have spotted errors in the existing entries. All feedback to [email protected] would be very welcome. Please note the Bibliography does not include minor references within large reference works, such as the Encyclopaedia Britannica, or to guidebooks published by the National Trust. How to use The Bibliography is arranged by property, and then alphabetically by author. For ease of use, clicking on a hyperlink will take you from a property name listed on the Contents Page to the page for that property. ‘Return to Contents’ hyperlinks will take you back to the contents page. To search by particular terms, such as author or a theme, please make use of the ‘Find’ function, in the ‘Edit’ menu (or use the keyboard shortcut ‘[Ctrl] + [F]’). Locating copies of books, journals or specific articles Most of the books, and some journals and magazines, can of course be found in any good library. For access to rarer titles a visit to one of the country’s copyright libraries may be necessary.

  • Renaissance to Regent Street: Harold Rathbone and the Della Robbia Pottery of Birkenhead
RENAISSANCE TO REGENT STREET: HAROLD RATHBONE AND THE DELLA ROBBIA POTTERY OF BIRKENHEAD JULIET CARROLL A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of Liverpool John Moores University for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy APRIL 2017 1 Renaissance to Regent Street: Harold Rathbone and the Della Robbia Pottery of Birkenhead Abstract This thesis examines the ways in which the unique creativity brought to late Victorian applied art by the Della Robbia Pottery was a consequence of Harold Rathbone’s extended engagement with quattrocento ceramics. This was not only with the sculpture collections in the South Kensington Museum but through his experiences as he travelled in Italy. In the first sustained examination of the development of the Della Robbia Pottery within the wider histories of the Arts and Crafts Movement, the thesis makes an original contribution in three ways. Using new sources of primary documentation, I discuss the artistic response to Italianate style by Harold Rathbone and his mentors Ford Madox Brown and William Holman Hunt, and consider how this influenced the development of the Pottery. Rathbone’s own engagement with Italy not only led to his response to the work of the quattrocento sculptor Luca della Robbia but also to the archaic sgraffito styles of Lombardia in Northern Italy; I propose that Rathbone found a new source of inspiration for the sgraffito workshop at the Pottery. The thesis then identifies how the Della Robbia Pottery established a commercial presence in Regent Street and beyond, demonstrating how it became, for a short time, an outstanding expression of these Italianate styles within the British Arts and Crafts Movement.

  • Curating Archives, Archiving Curating
Curating Archives, Archiving Curating Georgia, Nayia Yiakoumaki Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Fine Art Goldsmiths, University of London Octo ber 2009 The work presented in the thesis is the candidate's own. Abstract This thesis investigates the concept of archives and their role as a source for curatorial work practice. It starts with an examination of Jacques Derrida's concept of the archive in order to claim that every reading of the archive alters the archive. It examines the curating of archive material and compares it to a historiographical operation upon the archive itself. Moreover, it describes curating from the archive as a process concomitant with the three main constituents of Paul Ricoeur's historiography: 'The Documentary Phase', 'Explanation/ Understanding' and 'The Historian's Representation', as developed in Memory, History, Forgetting (2004). From the conceptualisation of this tripartite process the thesis proceeds by arguing that the curatorial practice on archives is an expansive gesture that opens their contents to numerous interpretations. The Whitechapel Gallery Archive is introduced as the case study here. More specifically, the thesis analyses archival material pertaining to Pablo Picasso and the painting Guernica, which was exhibited at the Whitechapel Gallery in 1939. The series of events to which this archive material refer, have been reactivated through artist Goshka Macuga's 2009 commission The Nature of the Beast at the Whitechapel. The thesis proves that a curator working through archival material permanently alters the constitution of the archive, as well as the subsequent interpretations of its material. Moreover, it is argued that the curator's intervention in the archive should be re-deposited within it as a means for the archive's potential expansion.
