  • COVID-19 Bi-Weekly Bristol Statistics Update Tuesday 20 October 2020
COVID-19 bi-weekly Bristol statistics update Tuesday 20 October 2020 We aim to publish a COVID-19 bi-weekly Bristol statistics update twice a week, on Tuesday and Friday afternoons. This may be delayed until the following day, depending on when data is made available. These numbers and rates do change daily but were accurate when published on the date stated on the report. Summary Bristol's rate of 211.7 new cases per 100,000 population in the last 7 days (up to the 16th October) is considerably higher than for the previous 7 days (135.9 per 100,000). The reported rate represents 981 positive cases reported for Bristol over the past 7 days within a population of over 463,000 people. The trend is very clearly moving upwards both locally and nationally and the Bristol rate remains above England rate of 170.8 per 100,000 and is now ranked 46th among 149 English local authorities. Bristol is a Tier 1 area in the new national assessment system. This means we must continue to adhere to national instructions and guidelines. We are closely monitoring any changes and are considering the situation carefully. The regional R number remains at the same level as last week: a range of 1.3 – 1.6 reflecting the rise in cases locally and nationally. The range of R is above 1 indicating the epidemic is increasing. The majority of the increase in new cases are in younger age groups, and reflect schools returning and universities opening. However, we are also seeing a rise cases in working age adults .

  • Kew Bridge Conservation Area Is Small but Distinct
KEW BRIDGE Boundary: Map 27, note that this post-dates the UDP and UDP map Date of Designation: 1st June 2004 Date of Extension: Additional protection to the area: Listed grade l status of Pumping station; other listed buildings; partially in Thames Policy Area and Nature conservation area; partially in buffer zone of Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew: World Heritage Site. Special Architectural and/or Historic Interest The conservation area is based upon the topography and confluence of historic routes at the junction of the Thames crossing point: and their effect; also those of industrial uses of the area, and its workers, on the built environment, in particular the buildings now occupied by the Kew Bridge Steam Museum. The special architectural and historic interest of the area lies in the industrial character created by the pumping station and its associations, and the high quality of architectural style achieved for them: because of their importance and their location. The Bridge itself is important as an architectural landmark. The conservation area is partially residential in character and also displays a degree of commerce, business and industry that grew up in the area. The scale of these, including the fine station building, is small, and immediately adjacent buildings to the conservation area have a retro style. Two large commercial buildings of the middle twentieth century, nearby, which have been over clad and modified to become residential, are outside the conservation area. The pumping station is the dominating building within the area. It was designed by William Anderson, for the Grand Junction Waterworks Company, to extract river water from the Thames.

Large Print Guide Exercising Freedom: Encounters with Art, Artists and Communities 6 October – 21 March 2021 Gallery 4 Please take this guide home. This document includes a large print version of the interpretation panel found by the entrance of Exercising Freedom: Encounters with Art, Artists and Communities in Gallery 4, as well as a large print version of the exhibition guide which is available inside the exhibition space. Document continues. Exercising Freedom: Encounters with Art, Artists and Communities 6 October – 21 March 2021 Gallery 4 Exercising Freedom: Encounters with Art, Artists and Communities this exhibition looks at the development of the community and education programme at the Whitechapel Gallery from 1979 to 1989. It presents rarely seen records from the Gallery’s archives which have not been widely researched to date. Walking through the doors of Whitechapel Art Gallery in the late 1970s, visitors could explore the wealth of arts from Bengal or immerse themselves in the abstract sculptures of American artist Eva Hesse. Facilitating these journeys was the Gallery’s pioneering Community Education Organiser Jenni Lomax, who developed a new approach to art and education and later became Director of Camden Art Centre. Document continues. For over a decade Lomax engaged young artists who often lived and worked in the area – including Zarina Bhimji, Sonia Boyce, Maria Chevska, Jocelyn Clarke, Fran Cottell, Sacha Craddock, Jeffrey Dennis, Charlie Hooker, Jefford Horrigan, Janis Jefferies, Rob Kesseler, Deborah Law, Bruce McLean, Stephen Nelson, Veronica Ryan, Allan de Souza, Jo Stockham – to act as creative mediators between the Gallery and East End communities, by forging partnerships with teachers, schools and local organisations.
