Curtains is written by Rupert Holmes, and is based on the original book by Peter Stone, with music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb (Chicago and Cabaret). Performances are Tuesday - Saturday at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday at 1 p.m., Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m., through July 28. Preview performances are July 5 - 7 at 7:30 p.m. Moderated talkbacks with the cast are offered on Friday, July 19 after the 7:30 p.m. show and Wednesday, July 24 after the 1:00 p.m. show. Curtains debuted on Broadway in 2007 and was nominated for eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book and Best Original Score. As Curtains opens, the chief sleuth, Lieutenant Frank Cioffi, who harbors a secret affinity for musical theater, investigates the murder of a Broadway-bound theater company’s tremendously untalented star on opening night. Could the culprit be the hard-edged lady producer, one of the recently divorced songwriting team, the egomaniacal British director, or the seemingly sweet ingénue? Curtains will have you on the edge of your seat - laughing! In addition to director Gavin Mayer, the creative team includes David Nehls (musical director), Kitty Skillman Hilsabeck (choreographer), Brian Mallgrave (scene design), Clare Henkel (costume design), David Thomas (sound design) and Jane Spencer (light design). -

Exercising Freedom: Encounters with Art, Artists and Communities 6 October – 21 March 2021 Gallery 4 Exercising Freedom: Encounters with Art, Artists and Communities this exhibition looks at the development of the community and education programme at the Whitechapel Gallery from 1979 to 1989. It presents rarely seen records from the Gallery’s archives which have not been widely researched to date. Walking through the doors of Whitechapel Art Gallery in the late 1970s, visitors could explore the wealth of arts from Bengal or immerse themselves in the abstract sculptures of American artist Eva Hesse. Facilitating these journeys was the Gallery’s pioneering Community Education Organiser Jenni Lomax, who developed a new approach to art and education and later became Director of Camden Art Centre. For over a decade Lomax engaged young artists who often lived and worked in the area – including Zarina Bhimji, Sonia Boyce, Maria Chevska, Jocelyn Clarke, Fran Cottell, Sacha Craddock, Jeffrey Dennis, Charlie Hooker, Jefford Horrigan, Janis Jefferies, Rob Kesseler, Deborah Law, Bruce McLean, Stephen Nelson, Veronica Ryan, Allan de Souza, Jo Stockham – to act as creative mediators between the Gallery and East End communities, by forging partnerships with teachers, schools and local organisations. -

HISTORIC LIBRARIES FORUM BULLETIN NO. 24 February 2013 It is a relief to report, after the bad news of libraries in danger in the previous bulletin and at our AGM in November, some good news. The Women’s Library has been found a safe home in the library of the London School of Economics, where it will continue to be available for use by both researchers and the general public, with its own dedicated space for exhibitions and teaching. Further details are on the LSE’s website: http://www2.lse.ac.uk/library/newsandinformation/newsArchive/2012/Womens- Library.aspx I reported at the AGM that rare books belonging to Wigan Public Library were sold off in October 2012, despite publicity in the local press and offers of advice from us. I helped a journalist from the Wigan Evening Post with some details of the books for sale. As a result of this sale we produced some guidance for public libraries with rare book collections, which was published on the Voices for the Library blog in November, hopefully to help public libraries before they get as far as selling off the books. We can only help to spread the word and help save the collections if we know about them! AND THE WORLD GOES ‘ROUND Music by John Kander: Lyrics by Fred Ebb: Conceived by Scott Ellis, Susan Stroman and David Thompson Westside Theatre - Off-Broadway - March 18, 1991 (408 perfs) SYNOPSIS "Rehearsals had been under way for nearly a month. In another week, we'd be in the Westside Theatre on West 43rd Street. On this particular day, John and Fred were coming to the studio. Of course, their appearance wasn't at all unusual. They were one of us. Even so, every few days we sat them down and showed them our progress. We wanted to make sure our interpretation of the number matched their own interpretation. Composers and lyricists are notorious for wanting their songs sung in a very particular way. For some reason, they think they know how a song is intended to sound. We were slightly apprehensive because we had been tinkering with one of their best known songs, Cabaret. We had changed not only the melody but the words as well. Our intention, unlike our intention for most of the other songs in the show, was to find a new way to present the song: to make it different-fresh-and as exciting as it must have been the first time it was ever performed. Now it was time to see if we had succeeded. John and Fred arrived. The performers stood around the piano and sang David Loud's new arrangement. When they had finished, a few moments passed. Nothing. Maybe this time we had gone too far. Finally, Fred broke the silence and said with a broad smile, "Well, you made the old turkey gobble again." Scott Ellis, Susan Stroman and I began working on And the World Goes 'Round just after finishing the New York revival of Kander and Ebb's Flora, the Red Menace. -

CABARET SYNOPSIS The scene is a sleazy nightclub in Berlin as the 1920s are drawing to a close. Cliff Bradshaw, a young American writer, and Ernst Ludwig, a German, strike up a friendship on a train. Ernst gives Cliff an address in Berlin where he will find a room. Cliff takes this advice and Fräulein Schneider, a vivacious 60 year old, lets him have a room very cheaply. Cliff, at the Kit Kat Club, meets an English girl, Sally Bowles, who is working there as a singer and hostess. Next day, as Cliff is giving Ernst an English lesson, Sally arrives with all her luggage and moves in. Ernst comes to ask Cliff to collect something for him from Paris; he will pay well for the service. Cliff knows that this will involve smuggling currency, but agrees to go. Ernst's fee will be useful now that Cliff and Sally are to be married. Fraulein Schneider and her admirer, a Jewish greengrocer named Herr Schultz, also decide to become engaged and a celebration party is held in Herr Schultz shop. In the middle of the festivities Ernst arrives wearing a Nazi armband. Cliff realizes that his Paris errand was on behalf of the Nazi party and refuses Ernst's payment, but Sally accepts it. At Cliff's flat Sally gets ready to go back to work at the Kit Kat Klub. Cliff determines that they will leave for America but that evening he calls at the Klub and finds Sally there. He is furious, and when Ernst approaches him to perform another errand Cliff knocks him down. -

This enabled us to celebrate not only the 50th anniversary of the Shakespeare Festival (1950-1999) but also the 50th anniversary of the first use of the Globe replica (1951-2000). John Cranford Adams originally conceived the Globe Playhouse in the 1940s, and a model was subsequently built with the assistance of Irwin Smith. In fact, the Globe model was exhibited on campus in 1950 and was the reason and occasion for the first Shakespeare Festival. -
