Dr. Jodi-Anne George Senior Lecture in English University of Dundee 10th July 2015 Abstract William Morris was a highly significant political and cultural figure of the nineteenth century. He was a great artist-craftsman and was hugely influential in the rise of the Arts and Crafts Movement in the second half of the nineteenth century, a movement which saw the revival of traditional crafts as a reaction to the utilitarianism of industrial mass production. Already an accomplished artist and writer, Morris became, in the 1880s, a significant figure in the development of the socialist movement. Often described as the first English Marxist, Morris ‘became’ a socialist when he joined the Democratic Federation in 1883. Morris was also deeply concerned about the destruction of the natural world caused by the increasing number of factories and he detested the stark contrast between the poverty of the factory workers and the wealth of the factory owners. He viewed the two, that is, social equality and care of the environment, as inextricably linked. Arguably, his political ideology would be best described today as eco-socialism. This thesis will demonstrate that, even as a young man, before he became politically active Morris was already thinking deeply about contemporary social and environmental problems, most of which were caused by what he viewed as the scourges of his era, capitalism and its concomitant industrialisation. This will be achieved by an examination of the cultural, social and literary influences on Morris from his childhood up to 1876. This analysis will focus on some of his literary inspirations that have not been explored to date. The aim of this thesis will be achieved , in addition, by a critical reading of Morris’s early poetry and prose from his contributions to the OCM in 1856 to the publication of Sigurd the Volsung in 1876. 1 Introduction ‘[It is] profit which won’t take most ordinary precautions against wrapping a whole district in a cloud of sulphurous smoke; which turns beautiful rivers into filthy sewers, which condemns all but the rich to live in houses idiotically cramped and confined at the best, and at worst in houses for whose wretchedness there is no name.’1 William Morris was one of the great polymaths of the nineteenth century.

    CHAPTER I THE HARMONY OF STRUCTURE: THE EARTHLY PARADISE In the following analysis of The Earthly Paradise I shall try to show first what was Morris's purpose throughout the composition of the work, and secondly, what was his actual achievement, with its significance for English poetry. In bringing together in The Earthly Paradise stories and legends from various cultures and various periods, Morris did not set out to point the contrast between the classical, the medieval and the saga methods, which could have been done only by a strict preservation or reproduction of the methods of each type. He aimed rather at showing the contribution of each tradition to the common literary fund of Western Europe — especially of English literary tradition — as it crystallised towards the end of the Middle Ages, in the time of Chaucer, as he says explicitly himself, if not indeed — as internal evidence may perhaps lead us to conclude — during the century of Caxton and Malory, just after Chaucer's death. In the light of more discriminate modem examination of the Middle Ages, we may incline to think that the atmosphere which Morris evokes in The Earthly Paradise is that of the very end of the Middle Ages, just before Renaissance classicism was to make familiar a different, more scholarly attitude towards classical tra­ dition, and to render less easy the acceptance of popular traditional forms and methods (cf. infra pp. 26-7). Morris was thus deliberately returning to the historical moment at which he considered the national cultural tradition had last existed in a pure form unspoilt by the "pride of pedantry"9 which he judged guilty of divorcing culture from the mass of the nation.

For more information on our activity and a full list of members see our website: www.nationalmuseums.org.uk Summary Museums are a critical part of the UK tourism offer, and visiting museums has never been so popular. Museums continue to develop their offer and operation to attract both domestic and overseas tourists. Museums and heritage continue to be primary reasons to visit Britain. Museums play a very significant role in the development of the regional tourist industry. They are frequently the most visited attraction in a town, city or region. They are also active in workforce development in this aspect of the tourism sector, including via apprenticeships and the sharing of good practice through local networks. Museum partnerships are an excellent and successful way of encouraging regional tourism, as well as building on the success of London. These partnerships have also helped with the regeneration of coastal towns built around culture or heritage. However, despite being so integral to the tourist industry, and the fact that supporting tourism is an economic priority for the Government, local authority and central Government investment for museums has substantially reduced since 2010.

    Chapter 1 Green Parties and Elections, 1979–2019 Green parties and elections to the European Parliament, 1979–2019 Wolfgang Rüdig Introduction The history of green parties in Europe is closely intertwined with the history of elections to the European Parliament. When the first direct elections to the European Parliament took place in June 1979, the development of green parties in Europe was still in its infancy. Only in Belgium and the UK had green parties been formed that took part in these elections; but ecological lists, which were the pre- decessors of green parties, competed in other countries. Despite not winning representation, the German Greens were particularly influ- enced by the 1979 European elections. Five years later, most partic- ipating countries had seen the formation of national green parties, and the first Green MEPs from Belgium and Germany were elected. Green parties have been represented continuously in the European Parliament since 1984. Subsequent years saw Greens from many other countries joining their Belgian and German colleagues in the Euro- pean Parliament. European elections continued to be important for party formation in new EU member countries. In the 1980s it was the South European countries (Greece, Portugal and Spain), following 4 GREENS FOR A BETTER EUROPE their successful transition to democracies, that became members. Green parties did not have a strong role in their national party systems, and European elections became an important focus for party develop- ment. In the 1990s it was the turn of Austria, Finland and Sweden to join; green parties were already well established in all three nations and provided ongoing support for Greens in the European Parliament.
