European Journal of Literary Studies ISSN: 2601 – 971X ISSN-L: 2601 – 971X Available on-line at: http://www.oapub.org/lit doi: 10.5281/zenodo.1481955 Volume 1 │ Issue 2 │ 2018 A SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE ALBANIAN NOVEL Gjylë Totaji PhD candidate, Faculty of Philology, University of Prishtina, Kosovo Abstract: This study, entitled "A brief overview of the Albanian novel", aims to investigate the history of the development of the novel genre in Albanian literature. It is a short historic view of this genre, where the most essential points of formation of which are touched, from the first novel to the contemporary. Trying to give a glimpse of the story of the Albanian novel, besides beginning the cultivation of this genre in our literature, we have also talked about the novel written during our national and post-Renaissance period, about the novel written after the end of the Second World War, the Albanian novel, written and published in Kosovo, as well as the novel written in Albania after the collapse of the dictatorial communist system. So we tried to include almost all literary and historical periods, so that our brief panorama is more clear and comprehensive. In a word, we tried to make a genre history that is great for studying our literature, especially the Albanian novel. Keywords: Albanian novel, brief overview, genre history, comprehensive overview 1. Introduction The formalist researcher, Mikhail Bahtin considers the novel as the only genre always being in the process of developing, and never as a completed one.”ii According to this point of view, however, we can say that even our novel is a literary structure that is taking shape differently every day. -

Note a margine della prima traduzione italiana di M. Edith Durham, High Albania, Londra, 1909 (Nella Terra del Passato Vivente. La scoperta dell’Albania nell’Europa del primo Novecento, Lecce, 2016) Abstract In the spring of 1908, the English artist and writer Edith Durham left Scutari on the way to High Albania, to visit lands barely explored by foreign travellers. Whereas a century before Lord Byron had celebrated Southern Albania, to which he dedicated several magnificent lines of his Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage, Northern regions remained shrouded in mystery: as Thomas Carlyle would put it, they were the lands of the “unspeakable Turk”, the frontier between Islam and Christianity. Her journey into the unknown led Durham to learn about customs and traditions whose origins were lost in the mists of myth, a small universe close to the coasts of the eastern Adriatic, prodigiously remaining at the margins of time and history. The results of Durham’s research were published in High Albania (1909), one of the most famous travel books about the tiny Balkan country. This paper deals with some features emerging from the first Italian translation of the Durham travelogue, in particular with the literary references which provided Durham with the methodological and conceptual coordinates that frame her insight into Albania. 205 Olimpia Gargano Keywords: Comparative Literature; Albania; M. Albanian Political Activity in Ottoman Empire (1878-1912)

In the second half of XIX century Albanians began their national revival. The great influence in that process had Frashëri brothers: Abdyl, Naim and Sami. They played a prominent role in Albanian national movement. Their priority was to persuade Ottomans as well as Great Powers that Albanians were a nation, which is why had a right to have an autonomy within Empire. The most important Albanian organization at that time was League of Prizrën – its leaders took part in Congress of Berlin (1878), unfortunately they heard only a lot of objections from European leaders. The culmination of Rilindja was a proclamation of Albania’s independence led by Ismail Qemali in Vlora, on 28 November 1912. One Hundred Percent of Jews in Albania Rescued from Holocaust
Book Review: Rescue in Albania: One Hundred Percent of Jews in Albania Rescued from Holocaust. Antonia Young, Bradford University, UK and Colgate University Rescue in Albania:one hundred percent of Jews in Albania rescued from Holocaust. By Harvey Sarner, Brunswick Press, Cathedral City, California; Co-published by the Frosina Foundation. l997. l06p. Sarner's hardback book is a revision of his pamphlet The Jews of Albania (Brunswick Press, l992. 44p. plus photographic plates) which he wrote with Joseph Jakoel and Felicita Jakoel. Both publications give a brief history of Jews in Albania and emphasize their exodus in l99l. The later work concentrates on possible reasons for the exceptional situation of Jews in Albania during the Second World War in that not a single Jew was taken to any of the Nazi concentration camps. This accounts for the extraordinary fact that by War's end there were more Jews in Albania than before, due to an influx of Jews fleeing from other countries - not only surrounding countries, Yugoslavia and Greece, but also from further afield, Germany and Austria for example (p. 32-3). Initially Albania was seen (as, more recently, it has been seen by Asians) as a loophole into other parts of Europe. However, as the Nazi stranglehold over each European country tightened it became harder for Jews in transit through Albania to find another destination. Sarner discusses the extremely tolerant situation between all religions of pre-War Albania, one which has brought frequent comment and citation of the phrase of the publicist and writer Pashko Vasa (l825-92) "The religion of Albanians is Albanianism". -

Of Women, Faith, and Nation: American Protestantism and the Kyrias School For Girls, Albania by Nevila Pahumi A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (History) in the University of Michigan 2016 Doctoral Committee: Professor Pamela Ballinger, Co-Chair Professor John V.A. Fine, Co-Chair Professor Fatma Müge Göçek Professor Mary Kelley Professor Rudi Lindner Barbara Reeves-Ellington, University of Oxford © Nevila Pahumi 2016 For my family ii Acknowledgements This project has come to life thanks to the support of people on both sides of the Atlantic. It is now the time and my great pleasure to acknowledge each of them and their efforts here. My long-time advisor John Fine set me on this path. John’s recovery, ten years ago, was instrumental in directing my plans for doctoral study. My parents, like many well-intended first generation immigrants before and after them, wanted me to become a different kind of doctor. Indeed, I made a now-broken promise to my father that I would follow in my mother’s footsteps, and study medicine. But then, I was his daughter, and like him, I followed my own dream. When made, the choice was not easy. But I will always be grateful to John for the years of unmatched guidance and support. In graduate school, I had the great fortune to study with outstanding teacher-scholars. It is my committee members whom I thank first and foremost: Pamela Ballinger, John Fine, Rudi Lindner, Müge Göcek, Mary Kelley, and Barbara Reeves-Ellington. -

STATE, LAW, AND REVOLUTION: AGRARIAN POWER AND THE NATIONAL STATE IN ALBANIA, 1850-1945 by Besnik Pula A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Sociology) in the University of Michigan 2011 Doctoral Committee: Professor George P. Steinmetz, Chair Professor Howard A. Kimeldorf Professor Margaret R. Somers Professor Ronald Grigor Suny Professor Michael D. Kennedy, Brown University © Besnik Pula 2011 DEDICATION To my wife, Shpresa. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS As I ponder all the individuals that have had a role in making this dissertation see the light of day, I realize how difficult it is to properly recount the numerous ways and uncountable acts, large and small, with which others have shaped, supported, and directly or indirectly helped me arrive at this finished product. I was extremely fortunate to have had a group of exceptional historical social scientists as members of my committee, whose support carried me from my early days as a graduate student at Michigan through the years of research and writing of this dissertation. All these individuals have made tremendous efforts in giving me the best training a rookie graduate student in sociology can get. I can only hope to live up to the high standards they have set. My principal advisor, George Steinmetz, has played an enormous intellectual and mentoring role not only during the research and writing of this dissertation, but during my entire graduate career. George was patient enough to stick with me as I scrapped my original dissertation topic to end up working on the one here. -

Dušan Fundić Institute for Balkan Studies Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts Belgrade THE ALBANIAN QUESTION IN SERBIAN-ITALIAN RELATIONS 1914–1918 Abstract: The rivalry between Serbia and Italy over the Adriatic region also involved Albania as a point of dispute. The political leaderships of both countries were driven by the war aim of putting an end to Austro-Hungar- ian hegemony in south-east Europe and of preventing any other country from taking its place. Each of the two countries sought for some time to establish its influence in Albania either through a local proxy, Essad Pasha Toptani, or by occupying the parts of Albania considered important for its perceived strategic interests after the war. Keywords: Albanian question during the First World War, Serbian-Italian Adriatic rivalry fter the London Conference of the Ambassadors of six great powers in A1912/3 and the signing of peace treaties between the warring Balkan states, the issue arose of establishing a government and preparing the new Albanian state for independent existence. In the history of international relations the term “Albanian question” is habitually used for a series of dip- lomatic crises and political clashes taking place in the as yet not definitively delimited territory of Albania among Albanians themselves, their neigh- bours and the great powers. The question thus concerned the political fu- ture of the Albanian population in the central and western Balkans. The future fate of Albania also figured in territorial disputes between the king- doms of Serbia and Italy over the eastern side of the Adriatic Sea during the Serbia and Italy in the Great War 186 First World War and at the Paris Peace Conference.
