Chapel Hill 2014 Approved by: Federico Luisetti Dino Cervigni Amy Chambless Valeria Finucci Mauro Novelli © 2014 Danila Cannamela ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Danila Cannamela: Knowledge Through Things: A New Perspective on Crepuscular and Futurist Avant-Garde (Under the direction of Prof. Federico Luisetti) This dissertation provides a first systematic English-language study on Crepuscularism. Challenging the common critical understanding that reduces Crepuscularism to a pre-modern poetic regression while identifying Futurism with Marinetti’s hymn to technological progress, I argue that these two Avant-Gardes share similar reactions to the modern bourgeois paradigm, both at a cognitive and ontological level. Overcoming the ghettoization of Crepuscularism as a provincial Italian phenomenon, the first chapter maps the historical and cultural setting of this movement, illustrating its intersection with philosophy, visual arts, and mysticism. In the subsequent chapter, I borrow from Bruno Latour’s thesis that modernity encounters its limits in dealing with cross-category relationships such as nature-culture and human-thing. Crepuscularism expresses its Avant-Garde role by ushering in an anti-modern discourse on hybridization that Futurism inherits and further develops. The third chapter explores how the two currents envision cognition as immediate intuition and participative immersion that entails also ignorance, understood as maximum freedom of knowing. -

1 DOCUMENTARY –––––––––––––––––––– Italian Writers Petition for Pound, 1956-1957 by Carlo Pulsoni [Carlo Pulsoni published the short essay "Liberate il poeta Pound" in the 20 March issue of Atlante, for which Massimo Bacigalupo has very graciously provided a translation into English. Many thanks to the author for permission to reproduce the piece here.] Twenty years have passed since the death of Vanni Scheiwiller, a "useless publisher of books and micro-books," as he loved to define himself. If his editorial merits are well known, perhaps less known is his role as promoter of the Italian petition to free Ezra Pound from the St. Elizabeths criminal asylum, where Pound had been imprisoned since the end of 1945. Thanks to the archival papers of the Fondo Scheiwiller stored in the APICE Center of the University of Milan, the salient stages of the story can be reconstructed. The appeal should have come out on Pound's seventieth birthday (October 30, 1955), but various circumstances prevented this. The failure was mitigated by the publication in the Corriere della Sera of an article by Giovanni Papini with an eloquent title: “We ask for the pardon of a poet.” In the following months Vanni goes back to work on the petition, hoping to deliver it to the American embassy, as he writes to Giuseppe Ungaretti in the first days of April 1956. In reality the delivery was to take place only in the month of August and was to have, in addition to Diego Valeri and Sergio Solmi as promoters, the following signatories: G. -

The Impact of Censorship on the Translation and Publication of Virginia Woolf in Italy in the 1930S
THE IMPACT OF CENSORSHIP ON THE TRANSLATION AND PUBLICATION OF VIRGINIA WOOLF IN ITALY IN THE 1930S Anna Maria Cipriani* University College London ABSTRACT: Defined as “the decade of translations”, the 1930s saw the publication of Virginia Woolf’s novels Orlando, Flush, and To the lighthouse in Italian. In the cultural and political context of Fascism, this is unexpected, given the peculiarities of Woolf’s experimental prose. Italian literary criticism was firmly founded on a normative anti-modernist canon, supported By Both the Catholic Church, which decried modernism and excommunicated some modernist writers, and by the literary movement led By the anti-Fascist and liberal philosopher Benedetto Croce. This de facto intellectual dictatorship complemented the official cultural policy of the Fascist regime By generating another dimension of censorship that invariably affected the puBlication of periodicals and books. The present work focuses on the effects of this triple (political, moral, and literary) censorship on the first translation of To the lighthouse. Introduction This article aims to demonstrate how the first Italian translation of the “modernist” novel To the lighthouse, produced by Giulia Celenza in 1934 under the Fascist dictatorship, was affected by an interplay of three different types of censorship. The first derived from the de facto “idealistic or intellectual dictatorship” (Coli, 1982, pp. 236-237; Ruberto, 2019) or cultural influence (Gramsci, [1926-1930] 1966; [1932] 2014, pp. 213-215) of the liberal philosophy of Benedetto Croce (1902), who advocated classicism and the art of bello scrivere [“beautiful writing”]1 under traditional aesthetic principles of poetry.2 The second type of censorship came from the ex-communication of the “modernist” movement by the Catholic Church in 1908. -
