How Listening to Music Can Have Psychological Benefits

Ah, winter blues... If the cold, the grey skies, the snow and the slush are dragging ya down, hey! Grab that guitar, play that , toot your horn! Whatever it is you play, every time you ride a tune, you ride a ray of psychological sunshine to a better place emotionally.

The psychological effects of music can be powerful and wide-ranging. Here’s a medically- reviewed but easy to read article that covers this in depth. Check it out:

Every month we’ll be featuring a student of the month. This student has been selected by their teacher for showing a respectful attitude in class, a desire to improve and a willingness to work hard to achieve their goals.

Our Student of the Month for February is Sarah Delamere. Sarah is a piano student at Lowe’s School of Music.

Q. Who is your favourite musician? Sarah: and Post Malone. A weird combo mix, but...... Q. Has this individual / band / composer etc. influenced your “playing/practicing/style in any way? Sarah: They make me want to work hard to be able to play their songs, or even to play like them.

Q. What is your favourite aspect of learning a musical instrument? Sarah: I guess being able to play songs that you hear, to hear a song and think - that’s really cool - and then be able to learn how to play it. Q. Do you have any interests/hobbies? Sarah: I like to play sports at school and dance! CONGRATULATIONS SARAH! Thinking Out Loud...

Despite the blowing snow and frosty temps, I’m already thinking about the spring and more importantly - playoffs! Even if the Leafs make it to the post-season, I think everyone is in agreement that they will have a rough road against any of the top teams in the East.

Raptors on the other hand are a dynamic and exciting bunch to watch, and sitting in a solid 2nd place in a very tough eastern conference. They have been playing the whole season with a playoff mentality, so let’s hope they can stay/get healthy and make a deep run!

See you next month!
