  • Hitler, Britain and the Hoßbach Memorandum
Jonathan Wright and Paul Stafford* Hitler, Britain and the Hoßbach Memorandum The Hoßbach Memorandum is the most famous and most controversial document in the history of the Third Reich. Yet there is no critical edition of it — a telling example of the degree to which historians of the twentieth century are swamped by their sources. Every line of the document deserves close study. It contains one of the classic statements of Hitler's racial philosophy and of the policy of the conquest of living space to solve Germany's economic problems. On this level it is comparable to passages in Mein Kampf and the Memorandum on the tasks of the Four Year Plan. But the Hoßbach Memorandum also offers an insight into another dimension of Hitler's thought: the first recorded detailed argument about when and how the conquest of liv- ing space was to begin. The essence of this argument is that Germany had limited time at its disposal because its relative strength compared to its opponents would decline after 1943—45 and that was therefore the final date for action. Hitler appeared confi- dent about the international situation. The weakness of the British Empire, which he elaborated in some detail, and the domestic divisions of the French Republic, Russian fear of Japan and Polish fear of Russia, the favourable attitude of Italy so long as the Duce was alive, all he declared offered Germany an opportunity to destroy Czechoslo- vakia and simultaneously to absorb Austria with little risk of intervention by other powers. Hitler also discussed two possible developments which would enable Germany to act before 1943—45: a domestic crisis in France which made it unable to go to war, or France becoming involved in war with another power which he saw as an immediate possibility for 1938 arising out of the Spanish civil war.

6 THE CAUSES OF WORLD WAR II IN EUROPE: HITLER’S WAR As you read this chapter, consider the following essay question: • To what extent was World War II ‘Hitler’s War’? As you have read, there were problems with peacekeeping in the 1920s, and there were aggressive and expansionist states that were threatening peace (Japan in Manchuria and Italy in Abyssinia) in the 1930s. Yet according to some historians, and according to Britain’s wartime leader, Winston Churchill, World War II was primarily caused by the ambitions and policies of Adolf Hitler – the conflict was ‘Hitler’s War’. worldwarIIquotes.wpd Appeasement, World War II, and Social Reform in 1940s Winston Churchill to Commons on the Air Parity (2 May 1935): “Things have got much worse, but they have also got much clearer. It used to be said that armaments depend on policy.... I think that at this juncture it is true to say that policy depends, to a large extent, upon armaments.... During the last three years, under the Government of Herr Hitler, and before him under that of Chancellor Bruning. Germany worked unceasingly upon a vast design of rearmament on a scale which would give the Germans such a predominance in Europe as would enable them, if they chose – and why should they not choose? – to reverse the results of the Great War. The method should be noted. The method has been to acquire mastery in the air and, under the protection of that mastery, to develop – and it is fortunately a much longer process – land and sea forces which, when completed, would dominate all Europe.”1 Adolf Hitler, "Hossbach Memorandum" (Nov. 1937) "The time for our attack on the Czechs and Austria must be made dependent on the course of the Anglo-French-Italian war and would not necessarily coincide with the commencement of military operations by these three states."2 Neville Chamberlain to his sister (March 1938) "As a matter of fact, the plan of the `Grand Alliance,' as Winston calls it, had occurred to me long before he mentioned it.... I talked about it to Halifax, and we submitted it to the chiefs of the staff and the F.O.

  • Nazi Aggression Planned Or Improvised?
Feature Nazi aggression planned or improvised? Hendrik Karsten Hogrefe Historians have tried for decades to understand how far A copy of the first edition of Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf. the Second World War was planned by Hitler. Much has been written and debated as to whether or not Hitler’s ideas evolved into an overall blueprint, which he intended to follow. Hendrik Hogrefe considers the extent to which Mein Kampf and the Hossbach Memorandum have been used by historians as evidence of a Hitler blueprint, and how valuable these sources may be in studying German foreign policy in this period. ince the 1960’s, there have been two main schools of thought on this subject. According to the ‘fanatic’ view, expressed by historians like Hugh Trevor- SRoper, Hitler aimed consistently at expansion and war. His Lebensraum policy has been emphasised since the days of his imprisonment, and naturally struggle and war were seen to be vital to its success. Trevor-Roper believes Hitler had a clear vision that involved a master plan for war and he completely controlled the events that culminated in his attack on Poland in 1939. The evidence for this interpretation comes from Mein Kampf and, according to Trevor-Roper, the ideas expressed in Mein Kampf and the Zweite Buch – Hitler’s secret book which was never published – are the keys to understanding German foreign policy after 1933. However, some historians suggest that these books only express broad aims that Hitler still held when he became Führer. The ‘opportunist’ view has been expressed most controversially by A.J.P.

  • The Origins of World War II
THIS FILE DOWNLOADED FROM THE IB NOTES SITE: http://ibnotes.tripod.com/ Notes by James Robertson 2001 The Origins of World War II: The Impact of Hitler: • Tension began with appointment of Hitler as chancellor in January 1933. Concerns raised that Germany would soon rearm and challenger Paris Peace Settlement. • International outrage as a reaction to Hitler’s actions concerning Germany— he made speeches insisting that Germany wanted peace— Suggested at Versailles conference that major powers disarm to level of German armaments. He eventually withdrew from both World Disarmament Conference and League of Nations on grounds that neither France nor Britain would treat Germany on equal terms. • Polish Non-Aggression Pact signed January 1934. • ‘Night of the Long Knives’ (29–30 June 1934)— many in the SA brutally murdered. • 2 August 1934, President von Hindenburg died. This strengthened Hitler’s power in Germany— he abolished President, ended the Weimar Constitution, and declared himself as Führer of Germany. • June 1935— Anglo-German Naval Agreement signed. This was a diplomatic triumph for Hitler— it recognised Germany’s right to rearm, and revealed the hollowness of the Stresa Front. The Collapse of The League of Nations, 1935-1937: • October 1935— Italy invaded Abyssinia, the last independent nation state in Africa. Samuel Hoare, the British foreign Secretary, asked League of Nations to impose foreign sanctions on Italy. They were imposed, but proved ineffective, because many countries were not League members, and oil was not included in the sanctions. • Hoare-Laval Pact— decided not to punish Italy too harshly, and allow Italy to gain most of land, except for small strip of land on the coast.

  • “Lebensraum”, the “Hossbach Memorandum” Etc Compiled by J4G (Justice4germans.Com)
Notes on Hitler's “Mein Kampf”, “Lebensraum”, the “Hossbach Memorandum” etc Compiled by J4G (justice4germans.com) The word “Lebensraum” appears just 3 times in Hitler's original German language text. I provide here the original German text (the surrounding paragraphs) which contain the word “Lebensraum”, followed by James Murphy's very good English translations of those same paragraphs. Adolf Hitler – Mein Kampf - Die vier Wege deutscher Politik p. 147-48 Die Natur kennt keine politischen Grenzen. Murphy Translation p. 115 “Nature knows no political frontiers. She begins by establishing life on this globe and then watches the free play of forces. Those who show the greatest courage and industry are the children nearest to her heart and they will be granted the sovereign right of existence.

Anna M. Cienciala. April 2011. Prefatory Note to Poland and the Western Powers 1938‐ 1939. The book – printed in England and Canada, so with English spelling ‐‐ is a revised version of my Ph.D. dissertation based on Polish archival, diplomatic documents, also on archival and published western diplomatic documents available at the time. After March 1939 (British guarantee of Polish independence), the Epilogue carries the story up to the German and Soviet attacks on Poland in September 1939. A more detailed account, based on archival and published sources available since 1968, is given in the article “Poland in British and French Policy in 1939: determination to fight – or avoid war?” (The Polish Review, vol. XXXIV, 1989, no.3; reprinted with minor abbreviations in Patrick Finney, ed., The Origins of the Second World War, London, New York, Sidney, Auckland, 1997, pp. 413‐432). There are some errors in the book, written without the benefit of Google and online sources, unavailable at the time. On page 1, note 1, instead of the text, lines 7‐8 on Roman Dmowski: “he spent the last years of his life in exile, returning to die in Poland,” should read: He spent the last two years of his life on his sickbed, dying on January 2, 1939. 1 On page 119, par. 1, line 9 from bottom, (Hitler suggesting Poland agree to ceding Germany a strip of land through the Polish Corridor for the German Autobahn [Highway] and railway line to East Prussia). I misread the letter m in the document; instead of: thirty miles wide, the text should read: thirty meters wide.

To accomplish this, I trace British historians, diplomats, journalists, and politicians' interpretations of Munich through successive phases of British history from 1938 to 1965» Emphasis is placed on the forces which have influenced British writing and speech-making on Munich: personal polit ical opinions, Britain's social and political structure, Britain's world position, and the British traditions of Munich historiography. I attempt to show that these fac tors are different in Britain than in either Europe or Amer ica and that British writers' conclusions are largely deter mined by such influences. Thus, hopefully I establish the existence of a unique historiography of Munich in Britain. The main body of the study is primarily concerned with two products of this uniqueness; the rise of a revisionary treatment of the origins of the Second World War, and the tendency to see Munich as an historical model for present policy.

  • Hitler and the Origins of the War, 1919-1939 Transcript
Hitler and the origins of the war, 1919-1939 Transcript Date: Thursday, 18 September 2008 - 12:00AM HITLER AND THE ORIGINS OF THE WAR Professor Richard Evans In this series of four lectures I want to discuss the origins, course and consequences of the Second World War from a German perspective: my aim is not just to explain how the war came about, why Germany conquered most of Europe with such apparent east, when the tide of war turned against Germany, and what the reasons were for Germany's eventual defeat, but also to explore the unusual, even in many respects unique nature of the war that Germany waged, particularly in Eastern Europe, to show how the war was experienced by ordinary Germans, both members of the armed forces and civilians on the Home Front, and to assess the changing levels of support for the war effort amongst the German people as a whole. In this opening lecture in the series I'll talk about the origins of the war. It used to be thought, both during the war and, under the influence of Winston Churchill's massive, and widely-read five volumes on its history, that the war was caused simply by Nazi aggression, and that the British and French should have stood up to it earlier. But this simple explanation was torpedoed by A. J. P. Taylor nearly half a century ago, in his bookThe Origins of the Second World War. In this provocative work, which helped shape the views of a generation on this topic, Taylor reminded his readers that in 1939 Britain and France declared war on Germany, not the other way round.
