De belangrijkste was het leren en onderwijzen van het Deens. Daarbij heb ik heel veel leuke mensen leren kennen. Mijn dank gaat uit naar Kirsten, mijn eerste docent Deens, van wie ik niet alleen ontzettend veel geleerd heb, maar die ook heel veel uurtjes onder het genot van een bakje koffie in de stad geduldig naar mijn verhalen in mijn, eerst wat gebrekkige en later iets betere, Deens heeft geluisterd. Van Anders heb ik ook veel Deens geleerd en van Romy, Claus, Alexander, Renno, Frank, Verena, Sorana en Claudio, die ik tijdens de cursussen Deens heb leren kennen. De laatste twee jaar van mijn promotietraject heb ik zelf Deense les gegeven en ik wil mijn cursisten bedanken voor de leuke lessen, die een welkome afwisseling op het schrijven van mijn proefschrift vormden! Natuurlijk ben ik ook veel dank verschuldigd aan mijn lieve, gekke familie. Mijn lieve vriendin, Magda, die me overal bij steunt en ervoor zorgt dat ik naast al het harde werken veel tijd vrij maak voor ontspanning en leuke dingen. Ik wil haar ook bedanken voor de hulp bij de lay-out van de omslag van dit proefschrift. Rieks en Betty, mijn fantastische ouders, staan achter mij en ik weet dat ze dat ook altijd zullen blijven doen. Greenhill ARC Centre of Excellence for the Dynamics of Language, The Australian National University & Department of Linguistic and Cultural Evolution, Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History [email protected] Language documentation faces a persistent and pervasive problem: How much material is enough to represent a language fully? How much text would we need to sample the full phoneme inventory of a language? In the phonetic/phonemic domain, what proportion of the phoneme inventory can we expect to sample in a text of a given length? Answering these questions in a quantifiable way is tricky, but asking them is necessary. The cumulative col- lection of Illustrative Texts published in the Illustration series in this journal over more than four decades (mostly renditions of the ‘North Wind and the Sun’) gives us an ideal dataset for pursuing these questions. Here we investigate a tractable subset of the above questions, namely: What proportion of a language’s phoneme inventory do these texts enable us to recover, in the minimal sense of having at least one allophone of each phoneme? We find that, even with this low bar, only three languages (Modern Greek, Shipibo and the Treger dialect of Breton) attest all phonemes in these texts.

    Towards Understanding the Status of the Dual in Pre-Islamic Arabic MUHAMMAD AL-SHARKAWI (Wayne State University, Detroit) Abstract This article suggests that the dual suffix in pre-Islamic Arabic did not differentiate for case. Tamīm, one of the most trustworthy pre-Islamic dialects, treated the dual suffix invariably although it had a full case system. There are also tokens of the same invariable treatment in the Qurʾān. The article proposes that the suffix long vowel variation due to the phenomenon of ʾimāla makes the formal origin of the invariable dual suffix difficult to ascribe to the East and Northwest Semitic oblique dual allomorph. Keywords: Dual, pre-Islamic Arabic, ʾimāla, Classical Arabic, vowel harmony. Introduction This article discusses data on the dual suffix in pre-Islamic dialects from medieval Arab grammarians and manuals of qirāʾāt to suggest that the status of the dual suffix in the pre- Islamic Arabic linguistic situation was unique among the Semitic languages.1 The article does not, however, seek to take a comparative Semitic framework. It rather seeks to discuss the dual suffix behavior on the eve of the Arab conquests and probably immediately thereafter. Although attempts to understand particular structural concepts of pre-Islamic Arabic are forthcoming, the formal, functional and semantic shape of the dual system remains to be studied in detail. In addition, despite the limited and sporadic data about the morphological and syntactic aspects of pre-Islamic Arabic,2 the dual suffix3 is one of the features of pre-Islamic Arabic dialects that can shed light on both the position of grammati- cal case4 in the Arabic dialects in the peninsula, and how it came to be standardized after the emergence of Islam.

Having a rudimentary smattering of the geography of the major language families, from where they derive, and where they fit into the world is an important piece of the foundation of an educated and culturally informed worldview. A basic appreciation of the cornerstone languages of Western thought, Latin and Greek, also opens new avenues to explore our common hobby: the etymology of almost every word you will encounter in French and Spanish classes, as well as all mathematical and scientific terminology (and jargon), is derived from one of these two languages. Lastly, this is designed to be fun and easy to ingest! It is imperative that all future Lexicographers strive for inclusivity in creating future editions.

Krouk Doctor of Philosophy in Scandinavian University of California, Berkeley Professor Mark Sandberg, Chair This study examines selections from the work of three modernist writers who also supported Norwegian fascism and the Nazi occupation of Norway: Knut Hamsun (1859- 1952), winner of the 1920 Nobel Prize; Rolf Jacobsen (1907-1994), Norway’s major modernist poet; and Åsmund Sveen (1910-1963), a fascinating but forgotten expressionist figure. In literary studies, the connection between fascism and modernism is often associated with writers such as Ezra Pound or Filippo Marinetti. I look to a new national context and some less familiar figures to think through this international issue. Employing critical models from both literary and historical scholarship in modernist and fascist studies, I examine the unique and troubling intersection of aesthetics and politics presented by each figure. After establishing a conceptual framework in the first chapter, “Unsettling Modernity,” I devote a separate chapter to each author. Analyzing both literary publications and lesser-known documents, I describe how Hamsun’s early modernist fiction carnivalizes literary realism and bourgeois liberalism; how Sveen’s mystical and queer erotic vitalism overlapped with aspects of fascist discourse; and how Jacobsen imagined fascism as way to overcome modernity’s culture of nihilism.

Based on field- work on three case studies — the Estonian Society of the Friends of the Camino de Santiago, the Pirita-Vastseliina pilgrim trail, and the “Mobile Congregation” — we have identified three distinctive features that shape the Estonian pilgrimage scene. The processes of Caminoization and heritagization characterize pilgrimage on a European scale, while the phenomenon that we call “bridging” has a more local flavor. Bridging refers to using pilgrimage to create connections between the Church (of any Christian denomination) and “secular” people. Historically a Christian practice, pilgrimage has transformed into something much more ambiguous. Thus, people often perceive pil- grimage as religion-related but still inherently secular. As the relationships between institutionalized religion and the vernacular world of beliefs and practices are multi- valent, there is evidence of an ongoing “re-Christianization” of pilgrimage.
