HALLATROW QUAKER MEETING BIRTHS, MARRIAGES & DEATHS

The only Register for Hallatrow Meeting begins in 1651 and is housed at the Public Record Office. This contains Births, Marriages and Deaths and was maintained rather imperfectly for about fifty years. Records exist of Monthly and Quarterly Meetings which in theory should duplicate the information in the Meeting Register, but in practice variations occur. From the beginning of the eighteenth century the only sources of information about Hallatrow Meeting are the records of the Monthly Meetings of the North Division of Somersetshire and the Quarterly Meetings of Bristol and Somersetshire.

In the following transcription discrepancies between the Hallatrow Register and the Monthly Meeting Registers have been noted in square brackets. Months were always shown as numbers and prior to 1752 one should bear in mind that month 1 was March and 12 was February.

1 HALLATROW QUAKER MEETING BIRTHS, MARRIAGES & DEATHS

The Register of Births for the Monthly Meeting of the North Division of Somersetshire covering the period 1661 to 1775 records in most cases the places of birth of children, but does not indicate which local Meeting the parents supported. The following births extracted from the Register could relate to members of Hallatrow Meeting, although there is no evidence for supposing this, other than that Hallatrow was likely to be the nearest Meeting or members of these families were buried at Hallatrow.

2 HALLATROW QUAKER MEETING BIRTHS, MARRIAGES & DEATHS

The Register for the monthly Meeting of the North Division, covering the period 1776-1794 is in a different format. Once again, the connection with Hallatrow is only supposition.

William a son to William COLLINS & Martha born at Temple in the parish of Camely 23 1 1783 We who were present at the said birth have subscribed our Names as witnesses thereof, Eleanor SAIGEx, Hannah CLARKx.

William a son to William PALMER, yeoman and Hannah born at Litton 19 7 1788 We who were present at the said birth have subscribed our Names as witnesses thereof, Hannah CLARK, Sarah BIVVEN.

Walter a son to William PALMER, yeoman and Hannah born at Litton 27 1 1793 We who were present at the said birth have subscribed our Names as witnesses thereof, Thomas JONES, Martha COLLINS.

Thomas a son to William PALMER, yeoman and Hannah born at Litton 22 10 1794 We who were present at the said birth have subscribed our Names as witnesses thereof, Hannah CLARK, Betty DYER.

The next Monthly Register covered the period 1795-1837, but there were no births recorded for persons who might appear to have been members of Hallatrow Meeting.

3 HALLATROW QUAKER MEETING BIRTHS, MARRIAGES & DEATHS

The first death recorded in the Register of Hallatrow Meeting was in 1659. However, the Civil Register for Parish, begun during the Commonwealth, records two burials at Hallatrow in 1658. Both were of Quakers, but neither was entered in the Quaker Register.

Included in this transcription are entries for the burial of Quakers at Hallatrow found in the Parish Registers of High Littleton and Farrington Gurney. Only 2 out of 6 of these burials were recorded in the Register of Deaths, suggesting that the latter was not maintained very diligently.

All the Hallatrow Meeting entries have been cross checked with the Registers of the Monthly Meeting Registers and differences noted below by square brackets. Entries in both sets of Registers are chronological making it impossible to know which is correct where there are discrepancies in dates.

No separate Death or Burial Register survives for Hallatrow Meeting after 1707. Although Death Registers survive for the Monthly Meeting of the North Division of Somersetshire they do not record the places of burial. The following names extracted from the Registers are of persons who lived near Hallatrow and therefore may have have been buried there. However it must be stressed that there is no proof that they actually were.
