As you enter the next room, you hear a rustling in the dark, followed by a hiss. Four eyes peer out of the shadows, watching you. You stand perfectly still, making sure not to move, as a creature steps out into the light and looks you over. At first, it just seems like an odd looking, out of place chicken – perhaps a little bit bigger than other chickens you might have seen, but other than that, just a regular bird. But something about it seems off, and after a moment, you realize what it is – this bird doesn’t have a tail. Then, you realize that you’re wrong. It does have a tail, but its tail is a living snake, a second pair of eyes that stare at you. “What are you doing in my larder?” the creature squawks at you. You explain that you’re just trying to find your way to the Griffin’s tower, and it calms down considerably. “Oh, okay then. I don’t like people poking around in here, but if you’re just passing through it’s no problem. The ladder up into the Clock tower is right over there.” You are ready to leave, but curiosity overtakes you, and you ask the creature what it is. “I shall answer your question,” it hisses, “with a song.” Then, it throws back its bird head and begins to crow. I am the mighty cockatrice I like to eat up grains of rice But I also enjoy munching mice I do not like the cold or ice I’ve said it once and I will say it thrice I am the Cockactrice! I am the Cockatrice! “Myself, along with the Griffin, the Dragon, and a few others, all came to live here with the Wizard. -

Chapter 8 — Padding Because you need to build your armour around your padding you need to know how to make it first! Gamberson This supplies basic padding under the body armour and something to hang your arm armour off. Some people rely on their gamberson (with a few minor additions such as a kidney belt) as their torso protection. This gives them excellent mobility at the expense of protection. If you are learning to fight, as well as armour, you are liable to get hit a lot so body armour might not be a bad idea—your choice! Making a gamberson is a sewing job; go get a needle and thread or borrow a sewing machine. The material you make it from should be relatively tough (it’s going to take a beating), adsorbent (you are going to sweat into it), colour fast (unless you want to start a new fashion in oddly coloured flesh) and washable (see sweating above). Period gambersons were made from multiple layers of cloth stitched together or padded with raw wool or similar material, modern ones often use an internal fill of cotton or polyester batting to achieve the same look with less weight. A descrip- tion of an arming doublet of the 15th century is “a dowbelet of ffustean (a type of heavy woollen broad cloth) lyned with satene cutte full of hoolis”. A heavy outer material, such as canvas or calico, is therefore appropriate with a softer lining next to the skin. For extra ventilation you can add buttonholes down the quilting seams. -

The language for describing arms is known as blazon and derives many of its terms from French. The aim of blazon is to describe heraldic arms unambiguously and as concisely as possible. On the next page are some blazon descriptions that correspond to the shields (escutcheons) A-L. However, the descriptions and the shields are not in the same order. 1. In the past, fighting cocks were also a source of entertainment. Sadly, in some parts of the world, they still are. The poet William Blake (1757-1827) expressed his high opinion of chickens in the words: Wondrous the gods, more wondrous are the men, More wondrous, wondrous still the cock and hen. Nevertheless, the chicken has not generally been much respected by mankind. Often chickens have been (and are to this day) treated cruelly. The horror of battery farming is a disgrace which is still very much with us today. At the same time, England has recently witnessed a great upsurge of interest in poultry keeping. Both bantams and large fowl have become popular as pets with useful side products. They are, indeed, ideal pets. Friendly, undemanding, inexpensive, consuming relatively little in the way of food, and giving eggs as well as affection in return. As pets they have distinct advantages over the more traditional (but totally unproductive) dogs, cats, guinea pigs and rabbits. -

Heraldic Terms
HERALDIC TERMS The following terms, and their definitions, are used in heraldry. Some terms and practices were used in period real-world heraldry only. Some terms and practices are used in modern real-world heraldry only. Other terms and practices are used in SCA heraldry only. Most are used in both real-world and SCA heraldry. All are presented here as an aid to heraldic research and education. A LA CUISSE, A LA QUISE - at the thigh ABAISED, ABAISSÉ, ABASED - a charge or element depicted lower than its normal position ABATEMENTS - marks of disgrace placed on the shield of an offender of the law. There are extreme few records of such being employed, and then only noted in rolls. (As who would display their device if it had an abatement on it?) ABISME - a minor charge in the center of the shield drawn smaller than usual ABOUTÉ - end to end ABOVE - an ambiguous term which should be avoided in blazon. Generally, two charges one of which is above the other on the field can be blazoned better as "in pale an X and a Y" or "an A and in chief a B". See atop, ensigned. ABYSS - a minor charge in the center of the shield drawn smaller than usual ACCOLLÉ - (1) two shields side-by-side, sometimes united by their bottom tips overlapping or being connected to each other by their sides; (2) an animal with a crown, collar or other item around its neck; (3) keys, weapons or other implements placed saltirewise behind the shield in a heraldic display. -

THE BROOKE TOMB, COBHAM superintendence has been given by Charles Spence Esq, of the Admiralty, Chatham (who indeed has spared neither time, trouble nor workman- ship in the operations) and by Mr. John Gough Nichols." In 1866, Charles Roach Smith, F.S.A., of Temple Farm, Strood, writes to the same periodical to tell how J. G. Waller had recently restored all Cobham monuments, and giving details. In 1840, apparently, the tomb "had all its fragments carefully put together and the general architectural features, which had been lost by the destruction of the columns, were restored in plaster of Paris." The final restoration was begun by a Mr. Richardson (I of metallic heelball fame) and completed by Waller. "No part of the old work has been tampered with; even the smallest fragment of heraldic colour has been preserved . and every part of new work added is given from fragments carefully preserved in the repairs of 1840." It will be observed that there is no other indication of Ha,sted's suggested canopy of marble. As reconstructed, the monument has no space for columns to support a canopy, and it would seem Hasted was misled by the broken and detached Ionic columns which belonged to the sides. In no account is there reference to the iron grille which now surrounds the tomb. The tomb is described by Waller in Archreologia Cantiana, Vol. -
