Spotlight on Mr. Nick Koechel & People Like You By Karina Ferzoco (II), Contributing Writer If one happens to be meandering through the halls of the music wing, they may be fortunate enough to be graced with a slim and dapper apparition. Some have dubbed him a musical angel (the verdict is still out on the veracity of the claim), but what’s for certain is that the moniker “Mr. Koechel” will function well enough in the interim. Nick Koechel is currently serving as a student teacher in the school’s music wing as part of the program at . In his spare time, however, he is involved in many influential indie rock/jazz bands in and around Boston. One such band, the up-and-coming indie jazz group, People Like You, features Boston Latin School (BLS) class of 2010 alumnus, Matt Hull, on trumpet. Matt was also an active participant in BLS’s music department during his time here. Moving on to bigger and better things, Matt joined People Like You, and since then they have been making major waves in the Boston music scene. That isn’t surprising, considering that they have such prominent connections to BLS. Prior to People Like You, Nick played bass for more successful bands than most Berklee students can boast, such as I Kill Giants, Strange Mangers, Palehound and Leaner, all of which have churned out high quality indiemo jams. Although correlation does not equal causation, it would not be too contentious to point to Nick’s virtuoso bass skills as a large factor in each group’s success. As we speak, Nick is embarking on an expansive tour with Palehound that is going as far as , spanning almost the entire month of March. It is safe to say that he will be missed around the music wing and by the AP Music Theory class that he has been teaching. The country may not yet be ready to rock out to the degree that Palehound inevitably will, but one thing is quite certain: Nick is.
