  • Attending the Games Convention 2007
Vol. 1, Issue 1/2007 Black and White: Attending the Games Convention 2007 Ralf Stockmann Since the sneaky death of the E3 Entertainment Expo, the “Games Convention (GC)” established itself as the international gaming industry’s leading fair. 185.000 visitors - amongst them 3.300 journalists and 503 exhibitors - populated the crowded halls in Leipzig, Germany. But when it comes to innovation and evolution, the GC 2007 falls short. Thus, my answer on “how is the GC this year?” is “Just like last year. Played Table Tennis. Played Crysis. Waited for Spore. Maybe the GC is not exactly like last years – it is whiter”. The GC 07 does not encourage my faith in the video game industry. Instead, it was simply another year of waiting for the big titles: Crysis [1] much awaited successor of the both critics and players acclaimed Far Cry [2], is still in manufacturing. The single player demo looked breathtakingly good and played smooth and intense. So did the multiplayer demo one year ago. One has to raise the question what kind of progress has been made to justify this lack of scheduling. The situation gets only worse concerning Spore [3], probably the most awaited game recently: there was no demo at all. The so called “Spore creature editor” with its unique, bizarre possibilities of creating complex live forms out of nothing was the unchallenged highlight of the GC 06. There was no editor available this year, literally there was nothing available, and when I asked the staff at Electronic Arts (EA), they barely recognized the title of their forthcoming flagship.

WELCOME TO ORCACON 2019 Greetings, OrcaFriends! Wow, it’s already time for OrcaCon again; it seems like just last week we were here playing games and eating delicious food truck noms. We welcome back everyone who’s been with us from the beginning, and offer a joyous hello to all of you who are new to our wee convention. OrcaCon was founded by a group of friends with an idea of a modest friendly convention, focused on being a welcoming and safe space for folks of all ages to play games. We decided early on to focus on bringing diversity, inclusion, and accessibility to tabletop games, and highlighting many marginalized creators who feel left out of other tabletop spaces. For year four, we’re focusing on LGBTQIA+ creators, artists, designers, and more. Be sure to attend their panels and play their games during your weekend. We’re extremely excited to present an amazing guest list, and hope you’ll get a chance to play games with them or have a wee chat. They’ve submitted some great games and panels, so be sure to drop by and see that they’re doing. It’s great to support marginalized creators! We are extremely happy to be back here at the Bellevue Hilton. They’ve been so kind to allow us free parking and to bring in food trucks. They’ve been a delight to work with so be sure to say thanks when you interact with them! Speaking of new things for 2019, we’re also excited about some new Sponsors and groups.

  • 2 to Be Somebody: Ambition and the Desire to Be Different
2 To Be Somebody: Ambition and the Desire to Be Different The context for difference This chapter aims to identify some of the bands that enjoyed chart success during the late 1970s and ’80s and identify their artistic traits by means of conversations with band members and those close to the bands. This chapter does not claim to be a definitive account or an inclusive list of innovative bands but merely a viewpoint from some of the individuals who were present at the time and involved in music, creativity and youth culture. Some of these individuals were in the eye of the storm while others were more on the periphery. However, common themes emerge and testify to the Scouse resilience identified in the previous chapter. Also, identifying objective truth is a difficult task, as one band member will often have a view of his band’s history that conflicts with that of other members of the same band. As such, it is acknowledged that this chapter presents only selective viewpoints. Trying something new: In what ways were the Liverpool bands creative and different? ‘Liverpool has always made me brave, choice-wise. It was never a city that criticized anyone for taking a chance.’ David Morrissey1 In terms of creativity, the theory underpinning this book which was stated in Chapter 1 is that successful Liverpool bands in the 1980s were different from each other and did not attempt to follow the latest local or national pop music trends. None of the bands interviewed falls into the categories of punk, disco or New Romantic, which were popular trends at the time.

I certainly could not have completed this research without the greater Twitch community and its welcoming and open atmosphere. More than anyone else I would like to thank the professional streamers who took time out of their schedules to be interviewed for this dissertation, specifically Trainsy, FuturemanGaming, Wyvern_Slayr, Smokaloke, MrLlamaSC, BouseFeenux, Mogee, Spooleo, HeavensLast. and SnarfyBobo. I sincerely appreciate your time, and am eternally envious of your enthusiasm and energy. Furthermore I would like to acknowledge Ezekiel_III, whose channel demonstrated for me the importance of this type of research to semiotic theory, as well as CohhCarnage and ItmeJP, whose show Dropped Frames, allowed further insight into the social milieu of professional Twitch streaming. I thank Drew Harry, PhD, Twitch’s Director of Science for responding to my enquiries. Finally, I thank all the streamers and fans who attended TwitchCon in 2015 and 2016, for the wonderful experience.

  • Interview: Andreas Lange (Computerspielemuseum)
Special issue Preserving Play August 2018 21-27 Interview: Andreas Lange (Computerspielemuseum) Conducted by Alison Gazzard and Carl Therrien AG/CT: Can you give us a brief history of the Computerspielemuseum? How did it come to be, what were the major principles guiding its creation, and what challenges have you faced? AL: The initial idea was our belief that computer games have a big cultural impact on us and our society. At the time of the opening in 1997 they often were underestimated as only toys. Our approach was to set up a standard museum. We wanted to put games as a new medium in a traditional museum setting to show everyone that the cultural aspect of games is worthy of our attention. Thus this was our program and part of our name as Computerspielemuseum. From the beginning we received broad and positive feedback, even if the exhibition was quite small and made with modest resources. The founder and current owner of the Computer Games Museum is a non-profit organization called fjs e.V., which ran and still runs several projects on education and youth culture. For example it founded the German age rating system for games (USK) in 1994. The collection only started when we had decided to open a museum. I then went to flea markets and read private announcements in newspapers to buy the first collectibles, which were meant to become our exhibits. At that time, Ebay wasn’t invented yet. After we had opened, people started to offer us donations of their old games, hardware and magazines.
